are fake eyelashes neccessary?

Oct 17, 2014

    1. If you don't like the look of then, that's fine, they are your dolls make them to how you want them to look like if it makes you happy. ^_^

I personally, don't think that the face looks 'complete' without some eyelashes, I have mostly boys and I am very chosey which kind of eye lashes I use on them. it can't look too girly, Yes there are different kind of eyelashes out there just shop around, maybe you will see something that works for you.

    2. I don't think it's a necessary part of a faceup but at the same time it also depends on the type of faceup you might be interested in doing. I find eyelashes look good when the doll isn't supposed to have a completely natural faceup, especially when they are fair haired since, going by reality, I often don't notice the really fair eyelashes blond people often have (same as their eyebrows) but when the doll has 'makeup' on, it would be rather common if they were also wearing mascara to thicken, darken and lengthen their lashes.

Personally, I don't use them all that often, but it's also due to the fact I very often pick narrow eyed heads as this particular aesthetic appeals to me and eyelashes makes them look asleep, too gentle, and often make their eyes impossible to photograph if not all three at the same time...

    3. I can't say I understand the whole "boy dolls look more masculine without eyelashes" point of view. 99.9% of the male population have eyelashes irl, so how can having them be less masculine? The most beautiful natural lashes I have ever seen (long, thick lashes) have all been on men. It's like deciding eyebrows are feminine or that a boy doll can't have long hair.

I think not having lashes makes a doll look more doll-ish, which works if that's what you're going for. Maybe it's more of a living doll, or robot, or non-human. Or if your doll portrays someone with a condition (can't grow them, compulsively pulls them out) then it would add personal dimension to them.

What other people choose for their dolls is really none of my business, so you should do what you want with your doll. All my dolls get lashes.

    4. I have never understood the whole "Only girl dolls really need eyelashes" thing since on the whole, men have thicker and longer eyelashes than women. I don't notice eyelashes on women, but I generally do on men. Seriously go look at Chris Hemsworth. It's sort of ridiculous how long and thick his eyelashes are.

I generally find applied eyelashes to be more trouble than they are worth, so I don't put them in my dolls. They get crushed easily and often obscure the eye. One of my first orders of business when receiving a doll is to remove the applied lashes since I don't generally like the way they look super fake and out of scale. Only one of my dolls has them right now, and he's my Tom Hiddleston MNM, who the faceup artist put eyelashes in much to my surprise. I've not pulled them out yet because they're fairly unobtrusive.

    5. For me, it depends on the doll. Normally, yes I do put eyelashes on them, It looks more realistic, especially on dolls with larger eyes who appear to be staring like they're traumatized without. haha (My Customhouse girls look terrified without.) I do have a few, however, that I don't put lashes on. Usually the ones with lighter hair and/or small or nearly closed eyes, as sometimes in that case, it makes the doll look sleepy or like he's wearing a ton of makeup. In those cases, sometimes the faceup itself can take care of the illusion of lashes, and he won't need fake ones. Though with Ay and Amir, they both have the stylized Egyptian eyeliner, and I think lashes take away from the look I want, so they go without.

    6. I really like eyelashes- at least quality ones. But I HATE applying them! So most of the dolls I face-up myself don't have them due to being cheap and lazy LOL!

    7. I absolutely want my dolls to have eyelashes.
Elysion gear said it well, "I personally, don't think that the face looks 'complete' without some eyelashes".
I think the same. I think the eyelashes make the doll look so much more complete, more real and more interesting. For example my own minifee. She looked quite boring without eyelashes but when I applied them, they gave her more intensive and beautiful look.
I used to hate applying eyelashes but now I'm a little more used to it and I do it willingly ^^; I have just a problem that I don't really know where I could get good eyelashes.

    8. I personally put them in all my dolls, I like the more realistic touch eyelashes add especially when viewing the doll from any angle other than front on.

I also find that certain sculpts tend to have a deer-caught-in-headlights look without them. But it's all personal preference really! Do what you want, not what you think others should do :)

My trick for putting in eyelashes is to cut them up into smaller manageable sections rather than trying to put the whole thing in at once. With a good pair of tweezers you can take your time and put the lashes in one little piece at a time - this also makes it easier to adjust the length of the lashes as well if you don't want them to be super long!

    9. I have one doll with fake eyelashes on, they came with his default faceup. They are okay, do suit him certainly, but not something I'd put on all my dolls. All my other dolls (that actually have hair, some of them are hairless so no eyelashes) have eyelashes painted onto them, so they still have some. Eh, in some cases they don't seem to work too well, I find they crowd my doll's eyes, but most of my dolls are dreaming eyed.

    10. @ idrisfynn and Kim:

Actually I didn't understand it either. xD Originally both of my guys had eyelashes but on one of them, they got crushed so I took them off and wow did it make a difference! So I tried taking them off my other one and I'm so glad I did. I can't really explain why but they both looked more masculine without it, even though obviously irl men and women both have eyelashes.

Edit: For the record, both my guys are human and they look more realistic without the lashes for some reason. The giant lashes just look too fake on them, like guys wearing falsies or if shorter, too spidery. xD

    11. Personally I prefer my dolls without fake eyelashes. ^w^ While I don't really dislike them, I never really seen them necessary, and the few times my dolls have had them I Usually have messed them up when positioning eyes, etc. First ones where taped, which I think is handy since you can just tape them back, but I got tired fixing them after every time I did something to her eyes. Other one had her eyelashes glued on, and the other one just started dangling so I ended up ripping them of. I did prefer tape over glue. Easy to fix and reposition, and doesn't mess the face up if you take them off. :3

    12. None of my boys have them, but not because I don't think they look right on boy dolls, just because I've never bothered getting doll lashes and because when I was a new doll owner, I was afraid of messing up the whole putting-them-on process... and got used to how they look without them in the meantime.

But now I've found myself in possession of some fake lashes that I can't wear, so trimming them down and trying them on Vince may be the answer.

    13. I really think this is about personal taste.
If you are striving for a more realistic look, the you should definitely use them. Since most humans have them too.
I have one doll who doesn't have eyelashes at all. In my opinion they look funny on him. So he's not going to get any. And sometimes guys need those crazy thick long lashes when it goes with their style :XD:

    14. It's definitely a taste thing. I've seen a YoSD doll that was a redhead who had matching eyelashes and it looked really cute. It depends if it's more feminine or masculine of a doll, and if they're a child or an adult. I personally like them because it adds more depth and realistic properties to them. :P

    15. I think there was a thread about eyelashes or no.

But anyway--it's up to the owner. Some people like them and some don't.

I like them on humans because humans usually have eyelashes. I like the extra detail and dimension eyelashes can give a face. Often it's just a subtle little addition. Some people really make eyelashes a statement for the character, though.

    16. I think it adds more character if a doll has eyelashes, but, then again, that's only my preference.
In the end, it depends on a person's preference whether he/she would want to place fake eyelashes on their dolls or not.

    17. Most of my girls have them. A couple of my little ones don't and if I ever got a male bjd (I won't) I wouldn't give him any. One disappeared from my first doll so I just yanked out the other one. She has since been eyelashless <---New Word. The biggest reason is I just don't feel like going through the trouble to give her new ones lol.

    18. Most of mine don't have lashes. Mainly because either they lose them after some time or I never bothered to give them some when doing their fu. I don't really care for the lashes, anyway, because most of my dolls have light fus and the common "spider-lashes" are just too much. :sweat

    19. i prefer dolls with eyelashes although I'm terrible at applying them myself XD I think it makes them more realistic :)

    20. My girl doesn't wear eyelashes, though, I wanted her to. They fell off after her head was shipped back from getting her face up. :( But she looks fine without them, so it's not really a big deal.
