Are you bothered by seams????

Apr 12, 2010

    1. hmmmm nope I do not mind the seams, maybe I'm lucky but:

My first doll (Dollshe) came home sanded silky soft,
My second (Iplehouse) only had visible seams on the back of her legs, but they are very soft.
My third (fairyland) I do not have at home right now but I never noticed seams on her.
My fourth (Soom) I can feel the seams if I feel for them, but I can't see them at all.
My fifth (Dollzone, AOD hybrid) I can't find the seam at all even after looking for them.

So i am in the good luck pile, but really as long as I do not cut myself on my dolls seams (which I did hear of once). I will not mind the seams not pay extra to have them sanded down.

    2. Usually, i dont mind, but i once cut myself with a very sharp seem.

    3. I don't like seams personally, if they are noticeable. My Lestat is seam free, visually, was when I got him and from what I know comes standard with AoD. (correct me if I'm wrong, I bought him second hand.) I don't get why some companies can have cheap dolls and come sanded while the more expensive dolls seem to all require sanding, sometimes extreme. I get why one would pay for it, but the difference between some companies automatically doing it and some not...confuses me. Unless I'm missing something which is always an option. lol

I'm willing to pay the extra though, for it since I've seen one to many horror stories of people getting unsanded dolls with seams so bad they had to chisel away most of it before they could sand it down. And I don't trust myself with sanding anything. Ever. lol

    4. Surprisingly, I thought I would be bothered by them...judging by my reaction of dolls with seams in pictures. Then I got two pukipuki's and the seams aren't really noticable, neither are they on my angelreigon hehe .So now I don't really mind them at all.

    5. I really like seams just because they make my doll seem more like a doll.
However, when the seams are so noticeable that it looks like they're cracked, then I'd be a little concerned.

    6. I tend to like the tan and other odd colored dolls, so I am ok with seamlines. Unless they are more than a couple mm thick. Then I have to sand them down a bit.

    7. If they're super noticeable they bother me a lot, but if I really have to look to notice, I don't care at all. I agree that a company shouldn't raise prices to accommodate removing seams, but having it as one of the options would be very nice.

    8. I honestly thought they would bother me, but I recently got a puki and they don't bother me at all. lol

    9. I hate seam lines (on my own dolls). I could see them as an artistic part of the doll, like a joint, if the seams were all about the same depth and consistency, but mine certainly weren't. A heavy seam on one leg, a practically invisible one on the other.... The joints at least are all the same. Plus, the more pronounced seams seem to be dirt collectors. A bit of handling, and the seams become dark lines of grime (I know, I should wash my hands more!).

I know it's time consuming, but the work is part of the fun! When a doll comes home the first thing that happens is out into the garage, disassembling, and sanding. Arms, legs, hands, feet, all the seams, whether they'll show or not. I find it interesting to follow the contours of the body to gently remove the seams without sanding down the details, almost meditative. Sueding, too, but that's for another thread. But I'm very involved in my dolls, the more I have to do to them the more I enjoy them! I just spent several hours sanding down a neck so that another head would fit on it better and rather enjoyed it. I also prefer assemble-it-yourself furniture, so I guess I'm just weird that way.

    10. Yes, the seams bother me alot.

    11. I couldn't agree more! I ditto what you say! I end up paying for the extra sanding, and yes, it really doesn't seem fair :(

    12. Not really, they don't. Or at least, I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't extremely noticeable. And if at some point the seams in the pictures prove to be rather distracting, then I probably would sand them off.

    13. I only mind when they're extremely noticable or sharp.

    14. I used to hate the seams, as my first doll was Elfdoll Soah and seam free perfection. Then I paid to get my Soom Sabik's seams sanded and when he arrived, I wished I hadn't. He was scratched all over. It was dreadful. When I eventually restring him, I will sand him and remove the scratches. After that, I never paid for sanding again. If the seams bother me, I usually just use an exacto knife and run it down the edges, then sand properly after that. I didn't realise doll companies could stuff up sanding. If people are worried, there are some great youtube tutorials on how to restring. It makes it very easy once you've watched someone else do it. My only advice - buy hemostats/clamps before you attempt it.

    15. I really don't like seams. :s

    16. Considering I'm rather fond of darkish tan resin, I've learned to live with seamlines. They're not usually too noticeable anyway, at least not to me...

    17. Seams don't bother me because I kind of like seeing that my dolls are dolls once in a while. My kizdoll Saiy came with some major seams, almost as if he had been poorly aligned on one of his thighs. I tried to sand it, and was more put off by the change in the resin color beneath than the seem itself, so I stopped.

    18. Seams bother the living daylights out of me. I should really learn to get over it because I love the tan dolls so much, silly me.

    19. Well, just ordered my first BJD, but I do have 2 OT Dollfies. Not sure if the seams on them are the same as on a BJD, but for the most part, they're easily able to be photoshopped out.

For my BJD, I had the choice for sanding, and I said no since they seem pretty easy to sand off. Said no to body blushing for the same reason.

But unless they look extremely unsightly, or they hurt me or something, then maybe I would sand. But I doubt I'd be in such a rush.

And I also think having the 'doll parts' in a photo make the photo a little cooler; because a person who doesn't know about the hobby sees them, thinks they're some sort of odd manikin, but really it's just a little (or not-so-little) doll. It might blow their minds - it would for me.

    20. I kind of am. Ok, I REALLY am... >_>;; I have a little bandai figurine of Selphie from FF VIII and she has seams on her legs and I'm like LDKJASDLKJAS WHY CAN'T I SAND YOUUUU. :CCCC

But yeah, I don't think it's a HUGE deal for an owner to sand them down themselves, but it does seem strange that they wouldn't just sand them themself, right? I'd think it would be included in the price of the doll...
