Are you bothered by seams????

Apr 12, 2010

    1. It kind of bothers me but I'm too scared to sand them off myself. >_>

    2. I don't have any dolls with seams as of yet, since I've only bought B&G dolls. There was a time I pretty much forgot some dolls have noticeable seams. That being said, I'd prolly not like having a doll with seams. If they're not dangerous or cracked looking I figure I'd just get used to them. I'm too afraid to do any modifications on resin. .-. Knowing me something ought to screw up.

But if it does bother you that much then look at B&G dolls or something, cuz as far as I know they don't seem to have /any/ sign of seams. My two boys are as smooth as can be, it's quite odd. And I haven't seen any on some other people's B&G dolls. (I could be wrong though)

    3. Ya know, even if I pay a lot for these dolls, it's natural, as humans, to make mistakes and miss things. I don't mind doing it myself because in a way it's like marking him as mine. I had my hand in his creation, even if it's just sanding.
In some cases it's pretty bad. My mom bought a doll from SoulDoll and had to do a lot of sanding. When it's on the face or body because of a rough texture, then THAT bothers me.

    4. I was relieved my first doll came without seams. D:
She's so smooth and just looks very nice and polished.
If I ever got a doll with seams I know it'd bug me. I'd probably have to send her out to have someone sand them for me.
I would be to nervous to do it myself.

    5. i do not like seams at all :( i like my cheap dolls to look perfect imagine what i want my bjd to look like... i think seems are ok in unseen places though, because i do plan on having him dressed as much as possible. my biggest problem with seems on bjds though, is the fact that i do not want to do any modding, if i can help it.

    6. .... i hate seams.... of course the degree of how showy the seams are vary but I think it does make alot of dolls look unfinished, but maybe I'm just tuned in to prefer smoother forms!! XD

    7. Not really, since my dolls are mostly clothed, I tend not to notice them. And even when they were not it never really bothered me. :3

    8. I only have one BJD and he is from Luts. The seams are not really that noticeable but, here lately they have started bothering me. Because he is getting a little dirty and the dirt sticks in the seams and makes them uglier. Over all I would say they are better without seams but I don't want to bother taking them off right now.

    9. When I first got my Idealian I thought they don't bother me... but since he's body is really gorgoues with all the muscles and I didn't have yet any clothes, those seams really startet to bug me. The day after I bought some wet sandpaper and sanded them off.
o_O My fingers hurt that evening. Am still not sure if i would pay for seams sanding.. in a way its really some work and on the other hand.. yeah it's cheaper doing it yourself.

    10. I do not pay attention to seems untill they are invisible so so or if the doll is tanned. But i hate it on puki-puki e.g. Anyway i can remove them myself^^

    11. I tend to not mind seams as long as they are not too bad. It really depends on the manufacturer/company. If it bugs me enough, I'll sand them down.

    12. I'm not bothered much by seams unless they're extremely noticeable.
Such as very visible seams on a doll with barely any clothes on.
But I don't let it take away from the beauty of the doll.
I like to pay more attention to the sculpt of the face and body more then the seams itself because seams
(unless like...idk weird) can be fixed but if it's beautiful with the seams then it must be beautiful without the seams :3

    13. I did a search and didn't find this topic as a general topic, just on specific dolls, so please redirect me if I've missed it! Thanks!

So I've been thinking about seams on dolls. None of the dolls I bought in the first 3 years had seams. (AoD, DZ, RS, BBB, RD, IslandDoll, IMPL....) I didn't even realize for a long time that any BJD had seams until I saw one with them....and wondered why it wasn't finished. Now, I have two dolls that do. (Lati and BF) And I think since none of mine did for the first few years, I've really grown to dislike seams and they bother me...a lot. I know could sand them myself, but I'm afraid of screwing them up and honestly, just feel like a doll should be sanded before it gets shipped.

I've also noticed that while a lot of the less expensive brands arrive sanded, many of the major high end companies don't sand their seams. Why is this? Do seams bother you, or do you just think of it as a typical thing for a doll?

    14. No, I don't like them at all. I really think it to be ridiculous to pay $50 for sanding services. Is it really that hard? A doll cost about $500, and sanding is one-tenth of that. If a doll takes about a year to design, sculpt and cast, then one month is needed for sanding? You've got to be kidding me. But even if it is nice to have it perfectly sanded, I wouldn't mind sanding her myself when I get one...like others said, it's bonding. Besides, there's an awesome tutorial on sanding. I think it will be a good 'first step' for beginners to interact with their dolls.

    15. Actually it is. And the dust that comes from sanding is toxic as well. All employees working at a doll company doing this would be required to wear respirators and, depending on the country, possibly get hazardous materials training.

My dolls have seam lines but they are very small and in some cases invisible. I don't even notice them. I'm actually in awe of how well my dolls are cast compared to my own resin casting (jewelry, not dolls)

    16. Nope. Not unless they're evil seams that would cut me. These are dolls after all, and I truly do like the doll aesthetic--seams and all!

    17. You say 'when you get one', which implies that you don't have a doll yet so I assume you don't know all the labor that comes along with sanding. It is a lot of work. Personally, I HATE sanding and more often than not I get sick of looking at my doll afterward rather than feel 'bonded' to it from the experience. Because I'm a cheapskate I still don't usually pay for the service but I can absolutely understand why it's not an automatic feature for many dolls.

As for why a lot of the less expensive dolls don't have any seams, I'm fairly certain I read somewhere that there a certain casting method that does not give seams or they are very small, but many companies shy away from it as this method requires the detail of the sculpt be very minimal. This makes sense to me as usually the sculpting on cheaper dolls is pretty basic so they can afford to be cast in this way that eliminates seams, but those dolls creators who prefer greater detailing on their dolls use a different method. I don't know if this is entirely true as I can't be certain where I read this (I think somewhere in the debates section), but it makes sense to me.

    18. Inkybear : Thanks for the info and that's really interesting . I hate sanding too and get so frustrated...too much elbow grease for me.
With your info it does make sense then I guess as I was always wondering why some companies especially the Chinese ones that their dolls come so smooth and others don't.
After having dolsl without seams and the other with , I do prefer "without ". I have 2 Impldoll and a dollzone and they are just fabulous .

    19. The only problem i have with seams is that sometimes if they're really big then they catch dirt. Other than that i don't really notice the difference between my dolls with seams and my dolls without. I'm definitely not concerned enough to sand them off.
