Are you bothered by seams????

Apr 12, 2010

    1. i am ABSOLUTELY bothered by seams! >_< i cannot conceive something so expensive that's supposed to look as if it was alive to show such a cheap craftsmanship! .....my first and only doll is from LS, her body is as smooth as silk, they did a wonderful job on her! i recently ordered from soom and had to pay to have the seams removed, i was terrified at getting my boys with seam lines, the worst part is....you never know where they are going to have them and since they will get body brushing and make up it's not like i can remove them at home ;__; but yeah....i definitely hate seam lines, iplehouse dolls have them too, so i know i'll have to remove stella's and arvid's when i get those two >_>

    2. My very first doll was sanded by the company and I didn't know they had seams. I'm really weird about things like that so I'd probably sand the seams whether they stuck out or not.

    3. Yea.. It bothered me big time and it still kind of does. I also thought at first that she was cracked and it really scared me. I also own a Dollzone doll (Tulip) and the difference is amazing. She is super smooth and there are no seams anywhere. I do wish they didn't get away with it. It's very upsetting, especially since we spend so much money on them.

    4. I don't mind seams. I'm a new owner but I'm an artist so I'm not afraid to get in there and sand what i don't like. I went in and did my boy's seam a little just because I was sanding off a stain. IT's absolutely nothing to be scarred of. Plus not having them sanded gets them to your door quicker and cheaper.

    5. @_@ I don't like seams at all. When my first doll arrives i'll be sanding his seams right away if he has them, and every single doll I get after that too (minus tan skin etc.).

I think they would easily collect dirt, especially if you play with your doll a lot or if you don't wash your hands before you touch them etc. Plus it just seems silly to me. Like, when you buy cheap plastic made toys they don't have seams, so why do high-quality resin dolls have them? It just a little silly I think.

Aesthetically, they actually don't bother me too much though. It doesn't ruin a doll or a picture for me if they have seams showing or anything like that, but Its the dirt thing that really gets me. I've even heard horror stories of being scraped or cut by seams @_@ So yeah, no seams for me.

    6. I have two dolls, one in normal skin who had already had her seams sanded by the company when she arrived and one tan (real skin) who has seam lines. I don't want to risk sanding her seams because of the issues with colour change with tan skin dolls but they don't really bother me much so I just ignore them, they aren't sharp or dangerous it's purely an aesthetic issue. I find it funny in a way that the more realistic doll is the one with the seams

    7. yes, i took some b&w photos a few weeks back and a badly visible neck seam ruined a few shots, well not ruined but distracted from the shot, i guess they could be photoshopped out but i dont know how ...prefer to get them right in camera

    8. I appreciate it when my dolls arrive with no seams in sight, the fact that my Volks girl has seams infuriated me. As old as she is if I removed them now the discoloration would look worse then they do. I understand that its a time consuming process and all that, but for what they cost don't send me a product with seams so bad they look like cracks in the pieces.

I'm okay with the tiny seams that aren't huge, it's just the really bad ones that bother me.

    9. I'm only bothered if they're extremely noticable, otherwise I'm okay with it because I can sand them down myself or cover them with clothing.

    10. im not bothered by small seams but the big ones i am. i mean the small ones i see as just prof there a doll the big ones are gross.

    11. I don't mind seams - one of my dolls has a fairly sharp seam on one hand and while I thought at one point about sanding it down it's just become part of the charm of that doll.

I'm actually more bothered by the fact that some companies always sand the seams on their dolls - it can cause discolouration on tan/fantasy colours, and I find it maddening that they'll do it even if you request that they skip it.

    12. I'm not bothered by seams at all. Not even a little bit. It's just a part of the doll, in my opinion. Maybe it's because I only collect tinies, but I don't even notice the seams when they're clothed, anyway.

    13. my dollzone cat does not have any seamlines but all my other dolls are seamlined and cracked in one way or the other, i want to sand them but worried about marbling, that's painful

    14. All my dolls have seamlines but they are not really obvious. They don't bother me. If they were really visible and obvious I'd be annoyed but little seamslines don't matter, they are part of casted items.

    15. I admit at first I didn't really care, but when into the hobby and sanding I do like to hide them as much as possible, but I don't obsess over them as much as I expected and I've seen people obsess to get rid to xD. Something I never understood was why people complain about joints, since these dolls are all about joints and when nicely done they're beautiful.

    16. I don't remember if I responded to this thread or not yet. :O
I'm not bothered by seams. I mean, if they're jarringly there, it would bug me... but I actually love the parts of my dolls that remind me they are dolls, like joints and elastic and seams. If they're smooth, I don't mind that either! But I don't think seams have ever been an issue for me.

    17. I hate seams! How do you get rid of them safely?? Dolls without seams look so ethereal and life like. I want them so bad.

    18. Yes, unless it's a kit which is meant to be finished and assembled by the buyer (and usually considerably cheaper). For the price that most companies charge, I'd expect a completely finished product, with no seams, rough patches or piles of dust in the box.

What's odd is that usually it's the cheap companies that include seam sanding and other services in the price, while the larger, more popular companies that theoretically should be making more money expect their customers to pay for every little thing separately. I wonder if it's because they can be sure people will buy from them anyway?

    19. Yes!!!~ I'm bothered by the seams. For my future doll, I'll probably have to note in the order comments to sand the seams of the doll, even if it'll cost extra. I'll *pay* anything to get a doll with no seam lines. ^^
And I totally agree with you on the seam lines. Dolls are expensive & the companies should include the sanding service with the doll...but *sighs* oh well.

    20. Yeah - I don't like seams, thus far I've only ordered from companies that remove them automatically and I ordered sanding from Soom despite the cost (mostly because with my accommodation the way it is this year it really wouldn't be fair if I did them myself) And yeah I know it can lead to discoloration of the resin - but I think an uneven skin tone looks more realistic than raised lines (Hell if Hot Toys manages to remove them from their hair sculpts...)

I'm not scared of removing the seams myself - to be honest I was surprised that the recommended grit on the sandpaper is so low! (I'm far too used to having to sand up to a mirror finish - so I was half expecting to see numbers of the range 6000 not 400!)

I know that sanding resin has it's risks but I don't understand why the expensive/more sought after companies charge extra for the service when many of the "budget" companies just do it straight away as a matter of course.
