1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Are your dolls characters?

Feb 12, 2015

    1. 95% Of my future dolls are characters I shell into BJD sculpts that look what I was building.
But some special ones are just pretty/special BJDs, that I make a character for them

    2. nope, not really. I would say that my little trio family of dolls is just something pretty on my shelf that I get to make clothes for and expand my creative conscious. The dolls *do* seem to have personalities, but I don't have any stories or anything to go along with them, just an inner feeling of what sorts of things I would want them to wear/ what sorts of clothes I would like to make for them.

    3. All of my current dolls are characters. They are part of a group I share with a fellow member. These characters existed as drawings before we ever had the dolls. I still recall visiting numerous company sites in search of sculpts to match the characters' faces.

My future doll plans are based around the shelling of more characters, though the process will be slightly different. These plans start with an idea for a character, followed by the finding of a sculpt that matches the character I see in my mind. This would be before ever designing the characters' faces on paper. Thus the sculpts dictate the characters' facial features.

      I can work with either process, but my friend finds the method of matching a sculpt to a physical design to be irksome ^^;

Before I ever had any BJDs, I had poked around on company websites over the years and had admired the pretty sculpts. But it was not until I decided on shelling a character that I finally bought my first.

There are a number of sculpts I like the appearances of, but unless a character for them arises, I am not so sure I will end up getting them.

    4. This. My dolls have names but they're just dolls. No character avatar story driving any of it.

    5. My dolls don't have full personality. They have names and traits, that help me with what I want their faceups and clothing to be but I can never do a full backstory and the like.

    6. When I first became interested in BJDs there was absolutely nothing linking my future dollies to original characters, but the reason I decided to buy my first doll was because I wanted to model him after a character in a manga that I absolutely adore. Now, however, I've been writing a lot of stories about my own characters and have since found the perfect sculpt to match one of my OCs! I think that multiple OCs of mine will also receive bodies this way LOL =^^=

    7. Yes all of my dolls are distinct characters. Some have more elaborate backstories than others and are the shelled version of important OCs of mine. I find I get much more enjoyment from this than just getting a doll because it looks nice. I have sold all my earlier dolls for this reason. I also have a few non original characters (Loki & Thor) who I enjoy greatly as well.

    8. All of them have characters and are styled to represent those as well.
I make really detailed backstories for them and write down every little detail as well. It a thing I enjoy doing a lot in this hobby. :)

    9. All of my dolls have characters, but some characters came before the doll and some dolls came before the characters! I don't think I could ever have one and not have some sort of personality and traits eventually. A lot of times it's right after they arrive home, or just before. I love making little backstories for them in my head, even if I don't have all of their physical traits (hair color, eye color, etc) planned out. As long as there's a vague idea, I can think something up for them.

    10. I don't have my first complete BJD yet but I plan on giving characters to my BJDs. Actually, I want to recreate some of my pre-existing characters into dolls ^-^ And I am currently looking for the perfect boy for one of my oldest OC.

However it wasnt the same with my other non-BJD dolls. I got them for the looks and customized them with only that in mind, so while some of them have some character traits, most of them don't. Its mostly for aesthetics haha.

    11. I like to write stories and make characters, so dolls are a natural fit there. I started with a doll, a Dollshe Hound, and he became Chulyen. I started shaping a story around his character, and that's where all my other dolls started fitting in. Some of my dolls I bought specifically for a preexisting character. Others I bought then built a character for them. It's fun for me, and a big part of my enjoyment in them. It's one of the ways I play with my dolls.

I don't get anxious or upset if things don't go as planned. Sometimes a character will shift into an unexpected direction. That's also part of the fun for me. I like the challenge. Like people, characters evolve. The lovely thing about BJDs is they can evolve, too. They are blank slates, that with a different faceup or wig, can become someone completely different.

    12. Yes, I make my dolls into characters and they always manage to change somehow. My incoming girl was supposed to be very sassy and dark dressing and suddenly she is flower child. Now I have to get her a new wardrobe! My wallet hates me:...(. I am so glad others have this problem and its not just a me thing.

    13. Some of them are for anime characters that I really really like however, I never had a dd... Sometimes I would try to mold them into my original characters I'm really scarred of modding so I tend to create stories for them afterwards..

    14. My dolls represent my roleplay characters. Sometimes, I buy a doll to shell an existing OC, other times, I love a doll and create a character for them, but they all have a character that stays the same from rp to doll form to photostories and more. I don't ever want my dolls in poses or stories that go against my characters' personalities.

My one exception is Pharaoh Ay. He's actually based in history, and does not get roleplayed at all. He's more of a pretty shelf sitter. I do have an idea of his character in my head, but that's about as far as it goes for him.

    15. If I don't have an idea of who the doll's going to be and how their character will fit in with the rest, it doesn't come home. I just wouldn't get as much out of them in the end.

    16. my dolls are not characters, just love her

    17. My dolls are characters, the ones I have at the moment were created after I got the dolls, they're based on the dolls, however I plan on getting dolls to represent characters I already have.

    18. Like some other posters have stated, my dolls represent characters, but are not the characters themselves. I have bought dolls with no ideas in my head, but usually they work themselves out in the long-run. If they don't find themselves a place, then there really is no need to keep them. Some of my characters have "upgraded" into different sculpts over the years, and some of my characters have multiple representations in my doll family, but that's a rare thing for me. Sometimes I'm hunting for just the right sculpt that hasn't been released yet.

    19. yes, every single one of them. it's what makes them unique and special in my eyes <3

    20. My dolls are not based on original characters, but they do tend to become their own characters. Some of my dolls have a bit more developed story than others, but the stories tend to come. :)
