Arg! Why are all boys so big??

May 28, 2014

    1. i like the smaller boys.. i dont like beefy ones that much at all.. id like my boy to be just a tiny bit taller or the same as my girl.
i dont want it to look like hes with his baby sister or something. i want them to look like they are together

    2. Ive just ordered my first ever doll after wanting one for years, and one of the reasons for holding out so long was because I just couldnt find the body that I wanted. Initially, I only wanted 45cm ish dolls, but so many have such babyish bodies, and all my OCs are 20-25 years old, so it seemed creepy to use those bodies. But all the taller bodies were so beefy! My guys are slim, but toned. But, I finally found my perfect body! Doll family -h 65cm body. It was perfect for me, slender, well jointed, and with some great muscle tones. Means they dont look like children, and dont look like theyre on steroids either. Im so excited for it to arrive, it looked perfect in the pictures :'D

    3. I like different body types depending on the character that I'm trying to create. But I guess if I had to choose one or the other, it would probably be a more slender build. But what really gets to me is the sheer size of some of these guys. I mean who would want a 78cm doll! That's practically a statue! I actually sit by my computer with a tape measure so I know how big a doll is. I even saw a doll that I just feel in love with. He was so awesome and I had never seen anything like him. But I pretty much wrote him off completely when I saw how tall he was.:pout: So yeah I guess I want more options for smaller bodies.

    4. I'm an omnivore. I like skinny little sylphs and big voluptuous hunks. :aheartbea

I'm not collecting further at the moment, but my collection currently has a whole spectrum of shapes & sizes. When I started collecting in 2005, SD13 60cm-teen type was the standard, unless you wanted a Dollshe skinny-70cm-type. When the 65cm Volks SD16 came out, with his big biceps and round buttocks, he absolutely rocked the dollyworld! Nowadays, he looks positively petite compared to the broad 65-75cm musclemen out there.

But I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the trend towards ever-skinnier guys.... If you compare an old SD13 to today's average 60cm boy type, SD13 looks positively zaftig, with his comparatively chunky shoulders and butt and calves and babyfat-hips. Pants-fitting can be an issue! The 60-63cm boys I see today all seem to be so narrow and thin and stringy, even while the sculptors attempt to add more & more muscle definition until the poor kids look like beef jerky.

Some days I love dressing up the gloriously skinny clothes-horses in the collection, like SD17 and SDGraffiti and Dollmore Adam and the old Soom Gem... and some days I love decorating the burly huggable SIDs and EIDs. There are plenty of gorgeous bodies in the middle range to choose from, though. Soom 65cm Super Gem and Iplehouse 63cm NYID have nice slim bodies without huge chunks of muscle, if that's your cup of tea.

Truth: When it comes to pure tactile pleasure, I confess that I'm sold on the double-wide EID Superhero. He's a complete armful, he fills up your lap like an enormous cat in combat-boots, and he is just so effing cuddly. :chibi I don't have any cats, or teddybears, but I have an Akando for a woobie.

    5. ^ I wanted to say, yes, I'm quite surprised by how skinny my 63cm boys who have more muscle definition and look like they should be thicker than SD13 boys are actually much much MUCH skinnier.

With that said, I do like variety in doll bodies. I'm super happy with how there's many new taller/beefier bodies released, because I won't have been able to find a suitable body for my Mihael otherwise (he wouldn't have really fitted on a EID/SID body and there's the issue of resin match).

That aside, I do wish there's a bit more bodies which are tall but not overly muscled. I think sometimes I want the slightly undefined bodies many 60cm bodies have on a taller body for my characters, which I still don't really see. For the taller bodies, it seems that it's either super buff, or super thin, and usually for either types, the bodies have some ridiculous muscle definition... I mean it's all good because I have characters who are built/skinny, but I sometimes wish there's a SD13 boy kind of definition and fat-ish (well not really fat but broad? Thick?) body on a 65-68cm male body. (Unless there's one but I've not seen any...>_<)

    6. This is the main reason I don't own any SD males. They are ALL too skinny. I don't care if they have muscles or not, they're too skinny. Once you put clothes on them they look like high school kids... a 14 year old kid who is growing into his limbs. I can't imagine any of my characters that thin. They need some broader shoulders and look more like a man. Also, the faces are a little too girly. I struggle with that a lot.

Sorry, not into iplehouse dolls. They're pretty, but they wouldn't match the rest of my dolls.

    7. What do you think of this trend?
      - I'm ok with the trend. It's very interesting to see all the different sculpts and height. My limit is on the 70cm range so I don't think I'll be getting a doll that is taller than 75cm.

Are you dying for some skinny little boys?
      - Not really. But it's nice to see varieties when it comes to sizes and all those body defnition. I love Doll Chateau's Youth Doll (as well as the Adult Doll) because the aesthetic is there.

Do you love the big super hunks?
      - In general, yes. As for preferences, it depends on the head sculpt and body.

      Do you want more options?
      - Yes. Having more options is good. An option to choose different type of bodies/ body parts would be nice. More head sculpt including fantasy head would be nice as well.

    8. I guess I'm in trouble, since I really only like smaller(MSD) dolls, 60cm being pretty much my max height comfort wise.
I also like mature and kind of beefy bodies. I don't mind slimmer bodies, or bodies that aren't very built they can look awesome too. But I really don't like bodies that look like they belong to prepubescent little boys.
The face sculpts of most dolls are really "soft" and feminine too, I'd like a more manly face for my boys.

    9. I prefer MSD size but I wish MSD boys had face sculpts like SD boys. Most companies make their MSD boys young and feminine which is ok but I'd like some more mature ones too. Iplehouse J.I.Ds do good MSD boys. :)

I don't think I'd ever want to go higher then the 50cm range.

    10. I'm new to this but I'm pretty frustrated that all the adult males are 70 cm +. I love love love the sculpting of Dollshe Grant and David, but I just can't do that size. I want something more along the lines of 1/4 scale, 16 inch doll. Any recommendations? I just can seem to find any that are in that size. Thanks.

    11. I was recently poking through various doll sites and I saw a photo of a male doll (face only) who was just amazing. An exquisitely chiseled face, and absolutely beautiful while still looking like an adult male and not girlish or childish.
But then I clicked and scrolled down and ewww! He had this scrunchy, muscleman body! Not only do I find that look unattractive, but it didn't fit his face at all. What a letdown!

    12. I totally agree with you, Miu Len. I want my men to look like MEN. Beefy, muscled, masculine features.

    13. What I'd like to see are adult-looking male dolls in the 45cm range. All the "men" I like are built like skyscrapers. I don't want dolls over 50cm or so. Yet any male dolls around this size seem to look either like anime characters, or teenagers. I may be wrong, but I think you can find adult-looking female dolls in the 40-50 range. I'm looking to put a couple together but I don't want to plant trees in my back yard, if you get my drift!

    14. Iplehouse makes some more mature looking msd boys...
      Check them out. :3

    15. I go by what my character design calls for and it is usually skinny boys. My doll chateau is tall and skinny. My dollzone is skinny and a pretty good height. I would like to have a manlier guy though. But either is fine with me I guess.

    16. Late to comment, but I absolutely agree with all this. ^_^

Few of the OCs I have shelled are supposed to be that muscular, but since Iplehouse is the company that keeps producing the most perfect sculpts for their faces, I've adapted to it. It doesn't mean I've changed my view of the characters, but the shells are close enough, clothed, that I can overlook the extra bulk. Mind you, I still don't take my EID men with me on vacation, but I have smaller dolls for that purpose anyway.

    17. My issue is less "skinny" vs "beefy" and more "the face don't even match the bodies" /"they're way to tall eitherway"
I feel like while the bodies are becoming bigger and brawnier the faces a staying pretty much the same. Which i think most will agree they were more suited to the effeminate bodies they were created for. I see the faces of what should be teenage boys on bulky 65-80 cm body and am confused. (That or the face of a beast like man on a msd,)

I want variety, this is why I'v never been able to get into SD's.(tho i really WANT to, i have only msds and yosd), I want 2 boys of different heights to have different bodies too. Before they were all thin now they are all big, why cant we have both? I don't understand.

    18. I would love to see some more 60cm boys that look really manly. Most manly looking guys are 65cm+ (most of the time 70cm+)
In my eyes there are enough pretty, skinny 60cm boys but not enough 'manly' ones.
60cm is my absolute max :c

    19. SoulDoll I know makes a line of 50 something cm boys and some of the msd dolls are coming out with more mature bodies as well so I don't know that dolls are all going up in size over all. I do agree though that skinny bodies are lacking. One of my characters is skinny because he is supposed to be scrawny. He practically lives off air and spends his days outside. NO way does he have even the slightest definition to his torso. I had to do ALOT of searching to find a body for him (almost went with Doll Chateau but their bodies have odd shapes.

I wish they were not getting rid of the old slender sculpts to make way for the big beefy guys. I do, however, like the beefy bodies in some cases. My husband has a character that he was reluctant to pick a sculpt for because he hated how small the arms were and how scrawny the chests were. He finally picked one because he saw one of the bigger torsos. Adding the extra body type allows me to get more characters cast then I would have before. You can't do a 30 year old bounty hunter who lives on his motorcycle on a wispy little body.

That being said there can be too much of a good thing. Granado's titan body http://doll-granado.com/goods/body_titan is ridiculous. I can understand wanting a big guy sure, but that much resin? Yikes! I can not imagine dragging that all over the place, let alone trying to find clothes for the guy! Also the heads sometimes seem to be way to small and give the doll a pin headed look. NO NO NO

Over all I think what really needs to happen is that the skinny bodies stay, the beefy bodies pop up, and companies start giving more facial options so that we can get heads with defined jawlines that don't look stupid on a beefy body and keep our wispy little guys intact.

    20. I feel that every person has a certain taste. I like taller boys but i like them a little more slender, I can also see why a lot of people like a muscular build doll.

what do you think of this trend?
I'm not surprised that the sd males are turning into giant muscular hulk but I would also like to see some males that ate more slender (but not scrawny twigs) i don't like the volks sd male bodies since they look like little boys, but a body that's in between hulk and twig is good for me.
are you dying for scrawny boys?
I wouldn't say dying and not for scrawny. I do think we've strayed far from the actual 1/3 size (the 58 cm). I also feel the taller the boy that the harder the are to stand on their own.
      Do you love super hunks?
Eh give or take. For me the iplehouse bodies are a little much. Dream of doll large males also somewhat push it for me as well...
      do you want more options?
This is a catch 22 for me. I want more options but at the same time I feel like there are tons of options already and have a difficult time picking interesting (to me) dolls.
