Artistic Nudity: yay or nay?

Nov 15, 2012

    1. I really appreciate artistic nudes, both with real humans and dolls, especially as dolls can be so incredibly expressive. I'm waiting until I've had a chance to make myself a really nice lightbox for photographing in before I take any of my girls, but I'd really love to. Even more sexually motivated artistic nudes are still beautiful to me - I don't think that nudity or sex should be seen as a taboo subject, whether in art or general life, and so really appreciate photos which represent this.

    2. It's mildly interesting? I mean, good info, but joints are still distracting and really shove the fact that they are a doll in your face more often than not

    3. On occasion, but not for publishing online. I know they are inanimate, but it just does not sit well with me to take artistic, tasteful, but intimate of my girls and then share them with strangers online. I do not have problems with pictures of the nude doll for selling purposes though.

    4. ^This. I don't know why I'm squeamish about photographing my own dolls nude, but it does bother me. I appreciate everyone else's artistic nudes though.

    5. Aritistic nudity, doll or human is something I enjoy for it's artistic value. Of course, I dont' think it's intended for every public. On the otherhand I think doll sexuallity portraying is unnecesary and rude.

    6. I have realized that I am super liberal when it comes to the issues of nudity and sexuality, to be honest It had never crossed my mind that anyone might have a problem with seeing or displaying naked dolls.

    7. I don't believe there's anything distasteful about sexualization whasoever. I think anything can be sexualized and still hold no more and no less artistic beauty.

    8. Outfits are half the fun imo when it comes to bjd pics, so while I don't mind nude pictures at all, I think they get a bit boring after a while. Then again, some photographers really have a knack for setting up a shot so that it looks interesting, so some can certainly pull it off.

    9. I would not do it personally, but, I think it's possible to.. I just think it's difficult to be taken seriously as such a thing. I don't even care to draw dudes, because I know how blatantly misinterpreted it will be by many, even if said drawing/photo contains no depictions of sexual nature.

    10. I think the naked form is beautiful and these dolls are works of art so I'm definitely a "yay" . I'm not much of a photographer but if I were I'd photo them as whatever the theme required.

    11. I have a slightly mixed view on this since I seem to struggle with descent nude pictures when it comes to Lucy. She never ever looks right. I guess It's partually due to her character of a modest lady. However, when it comes to Aharon he just loves throwing off garments. He looks his best in nothing but undies cuddled up in blankets. -sigh- I will never understand that about him.
So, if it works with a particular doll, I'm happy to look at good pictures. Otherive - no. Just no.

    12. Edited because I"m dumb and already replied

    13. I say yay- I find the human body really lovely, and if I'm taking the trouble to blush my doll and add birthmarks, scars and other details, then I'm going to have it posed naked either fully or partially depending on my mood and the tastefulness of the photograph. The thing with me though, is that I'd only do it if it fit the character. For example, my Limhwa For You is beautifully sculpted, she has an amazing amount of detail, and her character is literally feral, so having her pose nude isn't an issue as she would be semi nude or mostly nude anyway. Nakedness isn't inherently sexual or wrong, exploiting it for the purposes of shame, inappropriate sexual content or other bizarre crap is the part that I find wrong. I wouldn't take a school aged character and pose them nude for example, nor a character who wouldn't otherwise have a reason to be naked in a photograph.

That said, I give all of my dolls full body blushing regardless of whether I'd show them naked or not. Reason being, it looks better.

    14. It depends for me. If it's done tastefully, it's a great way to enjoy the joints and the sculpting of the doll!

    15. This really depends on the poses and everything . As long as it does not intend to offend , im good .
Im into anatomy now due to drawing to yep.

    16. I think the human form is definitely interesting to look at clothed or not and that representation being reflected in dolls is just as interesting. When I pick my dolls, I have to also like the body. It's super important to me. I've been in many an art class with nude models, lived in Europe and live in SF so I'm not squeamish about seeing nude bodies. But I'm on the fence about contemporary doll nudity as an art form for some reason.

It might be because most of the photos of doll nudity I have seen, haven't really been all that "artistic" (or what I would prefer to view as artistic) and border more on having an overtly sexual feel (which yes can be artistic). What I'm saying is that these days just about anything can be called "art" - so I'm referring to an aesthetic that is more classically "artistic."

There are certainly some provocative and well done compositions in the name of "art" - but I also don't want to see humans as subject matter in the same type of works either, if that makes sense. I also haven't actively sought out nude doll pics either, knowing that's an internet can-o-worms. So I'm sure I'm missing the "Venus De Milo" of pics out there too...

To this point I did one day try to take some pics of my boy less clothed than not and he just looked awkward and annoyed so I deleted them all. Now that's not to say I won't try something similar on another doll in the future. But since I'm not really interested in the nude figure as artistic subject matter on people or dolls, it might not happen. But what I love about this hobby is that you can create your own vision and environment however you want.

So while I can appreciate the creative spirit around unclothed doll photography; I'm really more ambivalent than being definitely for or against.

    17. I like the idea :D I'm one of those people who thinks human body is beautiful and should be celebrated haha
I don't really make my dolls do it, but I've seen some beautiful photos on enchanted dolls.

    18. If the nudity is beautiful - then why not? Doll sculptors are making such a nice bodies, as for me it's just an art ))

    19. Sure, why not? They're dolls. I do mean artistic nudity though. :)

    20. I don't have a problem with doll nudity (tasteful or otherwise) as long as it's labelled and put in appropriate places so the folks who want to avoid it can avoid it and the folks who want to see it can find it more easily. I'm not very big on photography myself, though, so I haven't taken many pictures of my dolls, naked or clothes :p When I first got into the hobby I tried because I was under the impression that the One Right Way to Do BJDs involved photography, but after a while I realized I didn't enjoy that aspect of it very much so I stopped and focused my efforts on other things instead.
