1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Artistic touches?

Feb 26, 2016

    1. Okies, right off the bat this is gonna be a touchy topic for some people. So i do ask of you, please read the whole thing before you go off.

Topic i wanted to her from people is about recasting. Now i'm NOT talking about an entire doll, just a couple bit like replacing a joint that has broke. I have gotten this doll and the company no longer make this doll anymore, as a matter a fact they told my to buy a new body for her.

But the problem i came across i really loved the old body she on. she been modded and has some light cracking. She a beautiful green color, and the mod on her ear just gave a great idea. im gonna make her into a deep elven girl. i wanted to do her joint in a diffrent color. but after i got the disappointment about not being able to get her new joints, i i decided i was just gonna recast them.

but there was gonna be a twist to this, i want to do them in transparent glow in the dark blue. i wanted to make a whole doll again but with personal touches.

      the question im asking,
Would you consider this as a recast as a art thief? - even tho im not claim to be a maker of the doll.?

    2. This is only my opinion.

I'd say that IF you do the casting yourself, do only ONE PIECE for yourself to fix broken doll and NOT claim to be maker of the doll, it would be okay-ish. But if you order the piece through recasters it would be recasting to me. Reason for this logic is that you doing the missing piece yourself you are not giving any money to recasters to use for acquiring new dolls to recast.

But I can understand too, if the Mods here feel that self-made piece would be recasting too, because if you allow one exception it will be slippery slope.

The best option would be try to find another body of same company/sculpt and buy it for your doll. This might be real tricky, but it would be 100% no-recast option.

    3. You could sculpt something yourself that is similar to replace the joint, but unique to personalize your doll and then cast it yourself. That way you will not be recasting anything and you will have a special and customized doll.

    4. ^This. Doll mishaps happen all the time and often there aren't any replacement parts to be found. Epoxie is your friend! I'm obviously a bit biased when it comes to this topic, but to me recasting will always hit that grey-to-black territory, and feels scetchy at best.

But never mind my own feelings, let's talk about the financial cost and skills involved casting a doll. Resin isn't that expensive. I think it'll cost you about 50-100 dollars for each doll you cast, but silicone is a whole other matter. It's very easy to sink 1000-2000 dollars into a project like this, especially if you'll have to redo something (and you will).
Making molds seems easy, but it isn't as straightforward as it looks. It's not that hard to make a tiny mistake that results in the final cast always having bubbles, or the mold leaking resin, etc. Often, this means having to redo it. But even if you have the perfect mold, that doesn't guarantee a great cast. Resin is pretty finicky. If the environment is too cold, or too humid, if you use too much mold release (needed to get the resin parts out of the mold), too much pigment to color the stuff, you will get bubbles. Often, you won't even know what caused the bad cast. It was resin just having a bad day, or something. Without a pressure pot, the chances of getting a perfect cast is slim anyway, because even pooring resin into the mold will almost always cause some bubbles to get stuck.

I could go on about the difficulties of pigmenting resin, but I think you catch my drift already: Molding and casting is a specialized skill that you need to learn. Learning takes time, involves a lot of trial and error and wasting costly materials. I think you'd have a MUCH easier time if you'd send your doll to an experienced modder, so they can fix the broken joint. It's going to be a heck of a lot cheaper as well.

      Just my two cents :).

    5. I see what you mean. I do have casting experiance. I'm not looking for perfect. One of the knees are completely missing. And not not cast the whole doll, that is a great big hell no. I have repair broken joints before, but I find it much harder on MSD.

Plus I'm looking at it as I already own the molding maker and resin and pigments. I already owned the supplies. And I has a cheap method for removing the air. *pho e being deep with fi n post when I get home*

    6. Another problem you might have, just technically speaking, is that recasting any piece of resin kind of always makes the piece smaller. So yeah, you will have the exact same joint, only... a bit smaller, so maybe the fit won't be so great.
Anyway, if you do plan on recasting the parts you should ask the permission to the company directly.

    7. Recasting, even for personal use, is still recasting. The only way such an item would be allowed on DoA is if you asked the company for permission and they provide a verifiable statement that your project is okay.
Without such a statement by the original company, this doll would not be allowed on DoA in any way whatsoever. Knowingly posting an unauthorized recast on Den of Angels will result in a full forum ban.
-This includes listing dolls with recast parts in your profile or doll family list, mentioning the doll in a comment, or posting the doll in an image alongside another doll-
As Den of Angels has a very strict zero-tolerance policy towards recasting, this thread is being closed.
