1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Artists Using Doll Likenesses without Crediting [Mijn Schatje discussion]

May 31, 2009

    1. Oh good, I PM'd her some pics earlier because I was not sure who else to contact. Awesome! We are so lucky to have her help! :)

    2. The suggestion to post to blogs etc. is an excellent one, and a few of us have already started doing so. I've "spammed" it myself to my Dreamwidth account, my personal LJ, my doll LJ, my "essays" LJ, my IJ, my doll blog, my Wordpress blog, and on Bebo, Facebook and MySpace - I have also posted a link on Twitter. My boyfriend has also publicly linked to my posts on both his LJ and DW, so it will reach a wider readership amongst non-doll people as well. Our biggest weapon against her right now is the negative publicity of branding her a plagiarist; we may not be able to force her to stop plagiarising other people's work - but we can make it less likely that people will want to buy her work, particularly big names such as Sony.

People should be careful about the language used in such posts however; calling her a plagiarist is fine - it's what she is, after all. But be cautious about emotive language, such as calling her a thief - you could lay yourself open to a lawsuit from her for defamation of character or libel. Stick to the facts; they are damning enough, in my opinion.

    3. Yes, I'm going to be sending that list to a mod in a moment. So far only a few people have notified me of who they have contacted, so please if you have contacted someone let me know!

    4. I only have DA and facebook, and both are pretty inactive. Spamming them anyways.
True, the only thing we can do is exactly that. Wonder when Sony will realize.

Of course, koodles for Mijn Schatje for staying under the radar of plagerism police for so long, and also manage to sell prints.
Very admirable, the hard shell Schatje is able to put on herself. That may be the only reason she's not convicted yet.

    5. When I have allowed other people to use my artwork, even those who have paid for it, I always retain the rights to it. In other words, even though the client paid to use it, the artwork is still mine. They may own the copyright to the publication, but not to my actual work (this is so I can reuse it if I want to, sell it in galleries, etc.).
I wonder who did the photography for the doll companies? If they have their own in-house photographers or if they contract it out? In which case, not only the doll companies, but the actual photographers who did the work may also have a case against her. If they use in-house photographers, then that would not be the case; but using free-lancers to do the work, then it might.

    6. Actually, if you feel the need to flood something, and you have a twitter, why not? There are some of us who have started posting under there. Mostly it's been the same message, but if you want, take the discussion over there, too? If it gets enough attention with the hashtag, it might skyrocket into the "trending topics" and catch other peoples attention?

That's what's mainly been posted, with a link to radio's site, but you can change up wording as much as you see fit, just leave in the #mijnschatjetheft on your tweet so it adds to the collective.

      [/goes back to lurking]

    7. I'm having that put on my Facebook page. After all, since my husband is a professional artist, I have a rather keen interest in this from that perspective.

    8. The site has been updated with a list(at the bottom). If you contacted somebody and they are not on it please email/PM me!

    9. Radiotrash, check some of your example links to non-BJD copies. The Totoro ones repeat.

    10. Thanks, fixed it!

    11. What is sad is that she could have become an offical "bjd" artist if she had dealt correctly with her "art" from the get go. Contacting the companies that she wanted to do "paintings" of their dolls. She could have produced stationary or calendars for Luts, volks, maybe licca or Barbie even. She could have sold portrait comissions here on DOA, etsy, deviantart, etc (who wouldn't want a portrait of their favorite doll).

And instead she is fairly dispised among the bjd community and might have legal action taken against her.
      Just stupid...

    12. Sorry I'm posting this so late. I would of had this up sooner, but I had to work. Mods, feel free to delete this if you don't want the e-mails posted.
Here is a screen cap of her telling me she has an obitsu and obitsu faceplates.

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/aurons_girl/arttheft.jpg
Mentions owning a doll that she uses for references in her art.

      http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v86/aurons_girl/?action=view&current=arttheft2.jpg
And here she mentions it is an obitsu with faceplates.

    13. I just wanted to point out-
Like most of us know, Obitsu does not and never has had any type of face-plate system.
Also wanted to add, my first "practice" head was an Obitsu, and having modded a resin head before, I have to say the vinyl obitsu head is one tough cookie to mod. It's like trying to sculp from rubber. So to constantly "mod" obitsu vinyl "faceplates" sounds like a bit of misunderstood, quick research to me.:huh?:

    14. Does anyone have a hi-res of the one used as Example 10? I really suspect the face in the moon is another doll at this point. I keep looking at it, trying to place the shape of the eyes.

I also found this page which shows another clear Unoa face: http://paintalicious.org/2007/10/05/marie-blanco-hendrickx-aka-mijn-schatje/

I figure that's been seen, but I didn't see some of those on Radio's site.

    15. It's a customhouse doll, you can see it in this breakdown.

    16. I do not understand why she uses the same images over and over again O.o the tiger is in at least two pics, the totoro in at least three, carousel horses, that creepy moon thing, the white jackrabbit, the swallows...all repeated.

Generally I do not think of an artist very highly in the first place when they reuse their own images to exhaustion because it speaks very poorly of their creativity... the fact that she steals these is not only incredibly extra lame, but downright laziness... she can't even go out and find new images to steal? If you're stealing, how hard is it to punch a new word into google?

    17. She uses that Delf Nara face about 5-6 times.

I know we don't have overlays of all of her pieces based on BJDs (as that would be ALL of them) because I don't want to make the site massive. I think 25 examples are enough.

    18. Exactly my thoughts. She's just using the same few elements over and over and even if they weren't stolen, they don't really contribute *anything* to the images.
Oh, and don't forget the fish and the ship. I've seen those in more than one of her images, too.
