1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Artists Using Doll Likenesses without Crediting [Mijn Schatje discussion]

May 31, 2009

    1. Yeah, that's possible that it's a OOAK doll. It really does look like very much like Heyley, except for the eye shape. And the lips are painted fuller than the company photo. It's the aesthetics of the face that make it plausible that it's AIL, though.

    2. We should probably just stick to the images that we can make clear, defined overlays of. Art has too many legal grey areas to be crossing too many lines.

    3. The full lips and general aesthetic of AiL dolls aren't really as uncommon as people think ^^;

    4. Oh cxxxx I think I know the doll.. Its from that artist that wrote that Japanese doll making book. Must find my copy... off to look

    5. Actually, that face reminded me of Naruto Dolls. And I was wondering why it looked so familiar (I love this sculptor's work!)

    6. It reminded me of Yoshida. took me awhile to think of the name.

    7. Remember that for a solid case we MUST find the exact overlay (which is why I went to the artists for the stuff in the background; they know their own work going back to the year dot).

    8. Mijne has posted this on her Facebook comments today:

"Mijn Schatje at 2:21pm June 5
I have been talking to the president of DIM doll and another company, it's cleared up on their side and I have been also asking a copyrights specialized lawyer who assured me that I should not fear anything, thank you."

    9. Maybe she has nothing to lose financially. Good luck with that reputation, though. :|

    10. Has anyone confirmed this with DIM? She's lied before, so you never know. There's still luts, who seemed less than pleased and more than ready for some legal action.

I hope she doesn't walk away from this scott-free. Then again, that's life, isn't it?

    11. I'm really wondering what lies she is feeding to the doll companies though. I really hope she's not playing the language barrier or victim cards.

And I agree with sadistic_x_blood, I really hope that she doesn't walk away from this without feeling the repercussions.

    12. Uhh, did she tell the "copyrights specialized" lawyer that she was tracing a painter's works?

I can see a lot of legal hula hoops being done to get out of the situation with the doll companies and photographers... but when it's another 2-D artist whose paintings she's tracing from that's a whole other can of worms (especially when it's as much as the full couch and almost the whole body--a blatant copy undeniable to anyone with working eyes... or failing that, a conscience.) I feel awful for Audrey Kawasaki, particularly as I really respect her work, but it's fortunate that aspect has come to light, as she will have the best case above all others for pressing charges...

edit: also, even before the Audrey Kawasaki copy was pointed out, I was actually looking through the copy of Hi Fructose I have that features her because I could've sworn there was a figure with a girl with hair in the corner of her mouth that a Mijn Schatje "work" resembled waaay too closely... I found the Kawasaki painting I was thinking of, but now I can't find the Mijn print that looks like it... anyone know what I'm talking about? Maybe she already deleted it. :/

    13. Wow, I didn't know about the Audrey Kawasaki connection. What lazy, craven, dishonest behaviour. It's hard to believe.

    14. I agree with Lelei - there is no way to get out of the Audrey Kawasaki copying. No one seems to have confronted Mijn with the Audrey Kawasaki copies yet. Not that it's up to us I mean. I wonder if she is looking at the Radiotrash site and seeing the mountain of evidence line up? I have noticed that in a Google search this is coming closer and closer to being in the top listings. This story is being spread on the net.

I think the attention of the graphic design community/illustration should be drawn to this as well. I don't know if Europe has a Graphic Design Association but I know Australia has AGDA. Is anyone here a member of AGDA? What about the US/UK? If anyone is a member of a graphic design association/body/union or other organisation concerned with graphic design/illustration they could bring the attention of the body to this case.

Also it might be useful to get online stock community/forums talking about this as it concerns the use of images and plagarism. I will email istockphoto and see if they might be interested in doing a 'discussion' on this.

    15. A lot of people have posted this info on Deviantart, which is full of awesomely crazy (totally a good thing) graphic artists. In my experience, things like this spread like wildfire on DA especially given the rather large presence of doll owners there.

    16. The problem with Heyley is she's new and I believe this image is from 2007? Heyley is the closest one yet. The Naruto artist dolls mentioned aren't a match. I tried overlays and the eyes are all to close to the mouth to fit without stretching.

    17. I think...that's one of the most disheartening things I've read so far on this thread... does this just mean she has an amazing lawyer, or what? :...( I'd love to read *exactly* what DIM had to say on the matter, too....

    18. Or that they wanted to settle this outside of a courtroom? It is kind of disturbing, though. I would really hate to see her get away with this--granted Luts sounded really upset and I can't imagine Volks letting this kind of thing slide either, especially since she was using images of their dolls for commercial endeavors.

    19. kateb>> Or she could just be lying.

Perhaps she thinks that if she shows that we have less reason to be searching for more incriminating evidence, we'll stop.

    20. For what it's worth, she also deletes any negative comments that she receives... and this is going to definitely give an imbalanced view of how many people are supporting her as opposed to how many people think she's in the wrong. (For example, Netdiver posted yesterday on her FB to link their plagiarism coverage to her "OMG NETDIVER!" post... she deleted it almost immediately. Netdiver has basically retracted their endorsement, but if you don't actually click her Facebook post you'd never find it.

People are definitely joining her FB group just to be able to reply to her posts, so the growth in her fan group doesn't really surprise me.
