Aversion to customization?

Nov 4, 2005

    1. Yes! I'm so glad someone agrees with me on this. I cannot STAND changing a doll's eyes. XD I always put them in too loosely or they both aren't looking the same way or GAH! I just can't stand it.

      Customization in general I am pretty adverse to. I don't even like changing wigs or clothes. (Even though I tend to base part of my doll purchasing on how much fun a doll is to sew/buy clothing for. XD; ) My doll is wearing a cute dress? Good! She looks cute and I don't have to mess wit her! My doll's wig is on nicely and it's actually brushed, not a mess, for once?! DO NOT TOUCH HER! XD;

      I like my dolls to look pretty. The in between stages of the customization and the failed customizations are never pretty!

      I make lots of mistakes. I am not a careful person. In fact, I am the anti-careful, so I've learned not to sand or paint or do whatever to my dolls if I want them to look halfway decent. XD

      Strangely, I like stringing, though, but that's a lot less delicate work than a face-up or sanding to me, so. :oops:

    2. I feel the same way about my Blythes. Thinking about cutting their head open to reroot/whatever is something I'd never want to do. Not because it would be too hard or anything, but because the thought of cutting up a doll doesn't seem...humane. XD I know they're not real, but I don't think of them as just pieces of plastic.

    3. I know EXACTLY what you mean. With my LE Fullset Camine I'm wondering if I'll ever want to change him. and he's not even that LE since you can get nude camines anytime. =S even so I think I'll find it hard to change him, at least for a long while.

    4. I feel no need to 'work' at something that's supposed to be my hobby. I feel no need to customize my dolls myself, same as I feel no need to do my own plumbing, computer repair or furniture restoration. (And yes, customizing dolls takes more artistry and vision than those tasks, which is all the more reason I don't want to do them.)

      But that's what money's for. When I buy a doll, I budget in the cost of modifications and repaints. I think of myself as more of a 'creative director' and curator rather than the person who does all the work. I get exactly what I want, and even my most expensive doll is cheaper than a lot of limited editions.

      btw, I have problems stringing also. I find it helps to pull the string with pliers that have comfortable handles. I really can't pull the elastic with my bare hands as I bruise and get welts very easily.

    5. Ian-KunX - Uhm... I'm not one to really say much about things cause I don't really get involved much with board topics, but.. that sounded a bit harsh. I know, you're entitled to your opinion, which is perfectly okay. Its just.. well.. I was rather offended by it. There was a lot of negativity in it. I think there could've been a different way to go about stating your opinion.

      That, though, is just my humble little opinion myself. ^_^;

      Now on topic ^^;;;

      I really don't like stringing things much either! Every time I do I hurt my hands. Remus, my Event AI Custom House Nyll has a new-type body. I have NO IDEA how to do it!! Its a lot different than how Bin was! I'm also scared to try and figure it out myself. Perhaps I should just contact Custom House ^_^;;

      Though, I do find painting to be fun, then again, I enjoy painting and I've never done it on a 3D surface until BJDs!! It was interesting! :D

    6. It's funny... I love customizing and modding, but I find that I hate a lot of the steps involved. Like I'll be working and thinking "Man, I hate sanding" then I'll be working and thinking "Man, I hate stringing." There is nothing I hate more than full-body seam-sanding- when I got Hound, I put it off for weeks so he just stayed in pieces. I hate sanding and finishing, but I'm too much of a perfectionist to just let it go. I get really anxious if I can't get all the imperfections out of something I've modded. *twitch*

      I love painting and sculpting, though. :) And the other parts are necessary to get to that, so...

      My very favorite part is glossing the lips and fingernails. *grin* I don't know why.

    7. I'm so lazy when it comes to faceups. I was so excited for my dolls to come in and immediately started their faces... but then I didn't finish them until today, almost three weeks later. They literally sat there whining and complaining and waiting for me to get my act together. *_*;;

      As for heads just sitting around off bodies, that's extremely common around my house, so I don't mind it at all. Can't say as much for my boys, of course. And re-stringing... terrifies me.

    8. I haven't sanded yet, but part of that is I forgot about sanding until Dee had already been sprayed with MSC, and I didn't want to clean her off, sand, and respray, Koen came sanded, and Daray's seams were hardly noticable at all.

      For me, I kind of enjoy taking them apart, like when I suaded my boys... Or when I replaced Koen's hands and he was sitting around with crochet hooks holding the elastic loops, so he looked like Edward KnittingHands... I find it very funny ^^

      I also did my own faceups for two reasons, one if I paid for a faceup it would feel wrong to erase it and do my own at any point... Like buying someone's origional painting just to paint over it. Second, in person I can really 'feel' the character better and I worry if I sent the head off they wouldn't be the same. The exception if I might see if a friend will redo Koen's faceup for me sometime, because she does amazing work.

    9. Well said. Once I'm satisfied with the results I forget about the difficulties of the process. Sanding irritates my tendonitis so I plan on paying for seam-sanding in the future.

      I enjoyed doing Idris' face-up. It's not as professional as one I could buy, but I look forward to improving my skills.

    10. I like the idea of customizing, but I might wait a little later to try faceups because i'm pretty happy with the default one at the moment, plus I need to read up on it! :?

    11. I can't handle the thought of taking the makeup off my dolls or even restringing them lol.. they need sanding but i can't do it. I am hoping to find someone here I can pay to do it for me :barf

      If i am going to customize a doll I will probably buy it bare to start off with, like an angelregion head and body or something.

    12. I love customizing! XD Painting, sanding, shaving, stringing, I find it really fun. Restringing is loads easier with one of those nifty tools, cuts the time down to less than 5 minutes for me.

    14. Oh dear, this topic made me jump out of lurking! ^^;;

      First let me tell you that as you can see, you are not the only one who dislike customisation.

      I myself actually don't mind the idea/process of customisazing your doll too much, I just DON'T want to do it because I don't KNOW HOW to do it. ^^;; I'm one of those people who are scared of messing up their dolls you see -_-

      BUT I really want to at least learn how to do face up one days as I'm a rather artistic person and I would love to be able to at least change/fix their face up if anything should happen. I would rather keep the money it would cost me for a repaint by someone to buy outfits and stuff for my BJD too!

      I absolutely loath the idea of restringing though. I STILL have to restring Sariel and I keep putting it off (once his foot broke and I had to glue it back on, to do that I had to remove his leg and it gave me an idea of what restringing is like *_* ). Kiyoshi too is getting pretty loose now I think about it...

      I guess I'm lucky though as so far I have no wish to change the face up of my dolls: my Unoa Sist was painted by Araki (no way I'm messing that up!) and my AngelRegion Ren girl is a limited one and I like her face up. It leave me with Sariel and his face up was done by the wonderful dark_angel already.

      I guess I will leave my first face up for Sariel's boyfriend when I finally get him (and I'm thinking of a sleeping Yder or a normal Yder now :roll: ) and for my futures 1/6 dollfies. :grin:

    15. Ah so I am not the only one not so keen on customizing. The reason I bought my first doll was because I loved him just the way he was (a great faceup can make my heart dance). I adore his faceup and his eyes. They will never change. And if for some reason he does lose his faceup. :cry: I will send him off to get it did the exact same way. I have loads of close ups of his face so I would hope that would help the artist. He doesn't need sanding (and it is not really a good idea to sand a tanned doll anyhow) but if he does need restringing I will bite that bullet and do it because it will be best for my boy. I do change wigs though and he has settled on a long blond one. I do plan on buying the same exact wig again and cutting it to be shorter so he can have it both longer and shorter hair.

      Though I do think myself somewhat of a creative person, I don't have much skill for faceups (I fear I can never get the eyebrows looking the same on both sides, I have the same problem with I draw making things look balanced and I would be so sad if I mess it up) so I don't see myself doing them. I also don't trust my eyesight. I will most likely send them off to be done. I might try my hand at a body tattoo though (not for Amon but a future doll).

      And a bodiless head....I think I would keep him on a box until his body came. I just wouldn't like staring at it because it just doesn't seem whole.

    16. I *heart* customization! So far, I've done face-ups for Tambre and Aislinn, sanded Tam's seams, separated the fingers on Cady's and Tam's hands, and the toes on Cady's feet (Tam and Aislinn are soon to follow).

      Plus, I've changed out everyone's eyes and restrung 'em. The next doll I order directly from Angelregion, I am special-requesting that they NOT glue in the eyes! That was just a pain in the rear to remove.

      As for stringing, well, Cady was an unfinished kit, and my first doll, so I dove into the stringing thing feet first. It took me three tries to string her properly--the first two attempts left her tight in the arms and wobbly in the legs--but she poses pretty nicely now. Tambre came fully assembled and strung to perfection. I felt seriously guilty taking her apart to do the face-up and sanding! Aislinn, now, she came fully assembled, but Soulkids--as it's been previously documented--have the funkiest stringing EVER for the legs! Thankfully, Souldoll provided a spare elastic cord, so I just restrung her the way I did my Little Fairs.

    17. i'm still new to the hobby. but customization scares me to death. i'm so afraid i would ruin my doll. i haven't even changed her eyes yet. i might change my mind about this later, but for now, i'm satisfied with having other people do the scary stuff.

    18. Customizing is what brought me to BJD's. :grin:

      I love the anime character Hinoto from 'X/1999' and when I learned of BJD's and the endless possibilities, I can now bring Hinoto to 'life.' I'm grateful for those who have the talent to offer customizations since I can't and won't dare to maul a dollfie. :wink:

      Hinoto will be my first dollfie, and I can't to receive her. :D

    19. I can't bear to do it.

      I've lived with my boys for a little over a month now. I fell in love with them right out of the box. To me, it seemed as if their defaut face-ups captured who they were perfectally. I have, of course, given them gifts and clothing, but the thought of actually putting brush to resin scares me, because I don't want to make a mistake and take away who they are...

    20. I LOVE CUSTOMIZING. XD

      It's like... I think it's the reason I got so passionate about these dolls in the first place. I mean, I love playing with my boy and giving him a personality as well, but if I could I would even make his clothes! (I've tried, but I can't sew for the life of me...)
      Almost every day, I reposition his eyes or do something with them. I give him crazy eyes sometimes. XD Just for a bit, to scare people. I'm a bit afraid to do any sanding or anything, but if I needed to I would. His sculpt is perfect, though. I blushed his whole body the wrong colour and wasn't bothered. I'll just fix it later!!

      When I first got him, he was without a faceup, and I had never even seen a BJD in real life before. I went right to painting him and I love it~~

      I can totally understand how some people may not enjoy it at all. It can be SCARY! But I have an addiction to creating things, I guess. I feel like I've wasted a whole day if I've gone through it not making or changing something, so my boy is just another thing I love to customize. The painting of his face is my very favourite thing, though.

      Stringing has to be my least favourite, just because I always manage to pinch my fingers and they bleed. D:
