1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Back then and now...(Nostalgia Thread)

Dec 12, 2013

    1. I still remember what crazy amount a friend of mine back then paid for her El.
With the shitty €/$ conversion and the high price for a Delf, not to mention that she had no Paypal back then and had to use bankwire with crazy fees on top, she had to pay easily 700€...which is currently roughly 960$.
      For a normal WS El.
But that was 10 years ago, times sure have changed.

      And yessss, the old pictures!:D
Classic Luts, all white background, everything a bit too sharp looking and these damn plattform boots every doll was wearing.

    2. Wow, looking at the old Luts site really brings back memories. I had Shiwoo's page bookmarked while I saved up. It's hard to believe my boy is almost nine years old! When I think about how much variety in sculpts and companies alone, compared to now, it kind of blows my mind.

    3. This thread is mind boggling! I've only been out of the hobby for about 2-3 years, but coming back in now I feel like I have to start all over again because so much has changed!! I remember when Soom released their first monthly doll and the commotion it all caused with fantasy dolls suddenly being the IT thing. Now, fantasy dolls are absolutely everywhere! Also, when did Luts dolls fall out of fashion? And when did the whole recast issue suddenly explode O_o It's all so confusing! Back then it felt easier to get to know people, now everyone is so spread out on Tumblr and Youtube and Instagram and Facebook...oy. I guess a couple years really does make a huge difference in a hobby like BJDs.

    4. I really wanted a Seimei, back in the day -- just wasn't ever quick enough (or else I didn't have dolly funds when one popped up).

The Wayback Machine has been a blessing for me, with my love for old Customhouse (pre-2005 shakeup). The coverage of those late 2003-early 2005 versions of the site is pretty good, with a fair number of the subpages still accessible. And those beautiful galleries of the Uniques and Limiteds, mmmmmmmmm! Here's a link to the Wayback Machine's 2004 CH site archive, if anybody remembers and wants to admire: http://web.archive.org/web/20040701000000*/http://www.ainai.com/

    5. Long shot, but does anyone remember way back when:

Someone had made a red demon girl back about 10 years ago before we had these newfangled coloured resins. I don't remember which head was used but the girl had a Dollfie Dream body. I was debating a similarly-styled doll and was curious about what was used for the red colour, if it might work better than my usual airbrushed colours.

      Does this doll sound familiar?

    6. I'd never be able to find it, but I do remember what you're talking about. She was using a special kind of paint that bonds to vinyl for the body. I don't remember what she did for the head, though.

    7. Oh, a vinyl paint? That's what I was afraid of. I remember liking the really vibrant red colour but I don't imagine vinyl paint would work on resin very well. Something else must have been used for the head. I wish I could remember whose doll it was, but it was too many years ago. :(

    8. There was a red demon girl who had been painted with auto body paint. I though she was a Delf Lishe though?

    9. Teamwork!! I think we both found that thread at the same moment, cthulhu

    10. Thanks guys! That's her! :D

    11. You guys are on FIIIRE with your responses!

And, yep, if I'd seen it sooner, that gorgeous devil-girl was Paulkaiju's Yooskie!!

      :D

    12. Being reminded of the things in this thread makes me really appreciate how the hobby has changed over the years.

Anyone remember when Elfdoll's sculpts were really the only option available if you were looking for anything realistic and/or 'mature' and how finding clothing for them that wasn't lolita-inspired ended up being a real nightmare unless you had pretty much everything custom made?

I kind of wish I didn't now that I think back on it. :shudder

    13. I really am a noobie. I wish I was able to purchase some of the dolls when they first came out. I have lingered on a doll and then it was gone. I searched but oh well.

    14. @InkyBear- YES! I started drifting off about 4 years ago and now that I'm coming back into it, I feel like I'm relearning everything.

(And I feel extra-noobish 'cause I just forgot to reply with quote. It's been too long!)

    15. I don't miss that every boot had to be a platform one with straps and chains and crosses all over them  I'm glad BJD shoes have become more realistic and 'everyday'. And it's great that there are more people putting out amazing quality BJD clothes, because before all there was were the clothes the companies produced themselves and if you didn't want a lolita girl or a visual kei boy you were a bit stuck.

I miss the smaller and more close-knit community feel. The hobby was more spread out geographically, but the online community felt a lot smaller and it was easier to get to know people. I don't begrudge anyone joining the community, it just feels massive these days.

Remember when waiting for months for a doll was normal? I don't think people have less patience today, but there is a much stronger 'must have it NOW' culture of near-instant gratification. In the earlier days of the hobby people accepted that they had to wait or the alternative was to buy a second-hand doll, now it seems that dolls have to be brand new and shipped immediately.

    16. Ah man. So much of this brings me back...

But remember when Elfdoll sold short boys in homme skin? Then no more short boys. Then no more homme skin boys.
I looked on their website recently and can't find ANY boys anymore. What happened?

And when pukipukis exploded on the market, and everyone had one... They seemed smaller back then, too, somehow! (Not thinking of pukifee)
