Be With You: age27 doll Discussion

Aug 28, 2013

1. YG emailed me and said that Wood should be sent out within this week! So excited! I need to make him a wig and buy him some clothes and extra eyes. Wish I could find some pants to fit him. Maybe I'll try the EID sweatpants, they seem loose enough to possibly work. Thinking of naming him Ziricote, since I want to stick with the ''Wood'' theme. Carpentry is my other hobby, and I think it'll be cool to name him after a type of exotic wood. Or I could just name him ash. ;)

Edit: are there some glass eyes that could work with his eye mechanism? If not, I could just putty them in. What size eyes fit?

2. <3 He's beautiful!!! By the way, I love his eyes! Where did you get them?

3. LoudOwl - the only eyes that will work with the eye mechanism, have to have hollow stems and have the right inner diameter for the springs to fit inside.
And I don't know of any... :( Just some acrylics like he came with.

4. aernath : I found some eyes while I was looking at an eye thread that look like they might be promising. They have a similar shape to the eyes that come default in wood and star, but I'm not sure if the stems are hollow or not. There's a chance they could be rigged to work, as they come in all different diameters. You can also choose the size of the iris, which is kinda nice. They are glass, though. http://www.kanis-augen.eu/category-1/irismuskelaugen/i-rund/i-dunkelblau.html

5. Hey everyone :) I have been looking at these guys and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how you like them. I have owned 5stardoll and resinsoul and the posing for each of them had benefits and negatives. Thank you for any help you can give to me. <3

6. @Reslie : I really love mine! The only thing I have to compare it to posing-wise is a dollzone Clare. The arms and legs are pretty thick on these guys, so they're not gonna bend up to the point where the arms almost seem folded in half like some of the skinnier sculpts out there. Also, they're pretty heavy, so like any big doll they are going to be slightly cumbersome to pose. That being said, the built in silicone in the joints enables them to hold a pose really well, and they don't make the irritating squeaky noise a lot of dolls with no sueding have when you move their joints. The silicone sueding makes them seem like they're strung tighter than they actually are, which adds a sense of support behind their joints because they don't snap around or get kicky (my dollzone is very kicky). The hip joints are somewhat tight since they're constructed a different way than a lot of dolls, but once you get used to it it's fine. There is a little ledge on the back part of the (buttock?) that hinges up and enables them to hold a sitting pose easily without toppling over backwards. Overall I really love this doll and I definitely recommend it to someone who is thinking of getting a big guy. The resin quality is lovely and the sculpt is really beautiful and well done. YG (the maker) is a really nice guy, and ordering and shipping was a breeze for me. It only took about 7-8 weeks from the time of the order to having the doll in hand, which is really good considering some of the months long to even close to a year wait times that people have with some other companies. Also, the eye mechanism is SUPER DUPER CONVENIENT. There's no hassling with eye putty on these guys unless you want to change their eyes out to a different type of eye. I'm currently looking for eyes that can work with this mechanism because it would be awesome to be able to use it with a variety of eye colors. Well, that's my 2ยข for now. If you have more questions, post away and I'll answer them. Overall, love this doll! :D

7. What LoudOwl said!

I took my boy's head off to prep him for a faceup, and haven't messed with him much. Now that the weather has warmed up, I hope to get his faceup done and him put back together. Then we'll get some play time in, and I can let you know what I think for sure!
But off the top of my head, and from the little I've played with him so far: he's better posing than Lee-el 90cm boy, and because of the silicone nubs, he's better posing than Soom Mecha Angel(80cm). Granado Titan (77.5cm) is close in posing, but heavier. My personal favorite is the now discontinued LumeDoll Usil (85.5cm). He poses like a dream without any sueding.

I, too, am on the lookout for various eyes. I'm not determined to only find ones that work with the mechanism though. If I find a pair that are perfect size and color-wise but don't have the right stems, I'll just take the mechanism bits out and use the eyes like other dolls.

8. This is too funny! There's a Nine9 style BJD cafe in Seoul and I noticed they have a couple Wood dolls in a display case in the store! I also saw one up at a the cash register. :)
http://chichibanban.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-doll-cafe-nine9-style-bjd-cafe-in.html (last part of the post, the ''humongous man dolls)
And a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaa7id74WOQ
I posted this in a thread in general discussion, and then I noticed they had Be with you Wood the cafe. So you can check him out in an IRL setting!

With all those rippling muscles, he makes a perfect guard for the cash register. ;)

9. Thanks for the great info LoudOwl ! :)
I cant wait to go to all the bjd cafes and shops while im in South Korea (even though the atmosphere didnt feel so great when you visited nine9 styles cafe which is a shame). I've wanted to go to Korea for a long time now, before I knew about bjds. So when I discovered later that it was such a central place for ball jointed dolls when I got into the hobby, it made me even more excited :dance

10. It would be so cool to get Wood while im there. Though that's if he is still for sale by the time I go...:sweat
Then again it would be scary when I would eventually fly back with such a large doll. Has anyone here actually flown with really tall doll before? I would be too nervous to think about putting him in luggage since you cant always trust how airlines handle baggage. The only good idea I can think of is taking him apart, carefully wrapping each piece and placing it into a smaller secure box to take on board?

11. @ClarasCraft

I think your second idea (taking him apart and bringing him as a carry-on) would be the best idea. It's surely what I would do since airlines can be flippant about handling checked luggage. A cool thing about Wood is that he comes with an instruction manual which tells you how to easily assemble and disassemble him, right in the box! I've never flown with a doll before, but it definitely seems like it could be a nerve wracking experience. On the subject of wanting to keep his original box; if you had a big enough checked bag, you could fill his box with your clothes etc. things you're traveling with and just pack it up in your checked suitcase. That way you wouldn't have to throw his box away, and you could have him disassembled and in a smaller bag and take him as a carry-on.

You're very welcome for the info! I'm glad to give it as I think he's a really great doll, and very impressive in person. I'm envious that you get to go to Korea, you'll most likely get a chance to see Mr. Wood in the flesh (errr... resin, lol) if you visit Nine9 Style cafe. Be careful, you might fall in love!
;)

12. I have traveled with dolls many times, and it can be fun seeing the security bag scanner finding the doll in your bag on the screen. Some ignore it, some ask questions.
With my Mecha Angel Sabik, I kept him strung, and just had him in a tight crouch inside my carry on bag, with my clothes packed around him. Definitely do not put them in checked bags. Those are never handled with care. If you have anything fragile, always carry it on. Or mail it ahead of time.
I think a Wood would fit inside a typical carry on roller bag. My Mecha Angel did, so it's possible!

I would love to go to Korea too! I got to go back when I was about eight. That's been a while. ;)

Well, it has been rainy forever and I still haven't gotten my Star a faceup yet. Maybe next week. This one is shaping up to be more cold and rainy!

13. I've flown with an Iplehouse EID male before. I did NOT disassemble him. I hate taking my dolls apart, although it might save some wear and tear on joints while traveling IF you wrap all the pieces well enough. You can also just stick in some padding between joints, though.

EIDs are big and heavy. I couldn't fit him (strung) in any luggage that would be allowed on-board. I had to use a 27-28" checked suitcase and he had to be in a sitting position. I used clothes to pad around him.

I usually prefer to fly with my dolls in carry-ons because checked luggage gets opened by TSA and rifled through and often gets sent to wrong destinations, etc. But he was just too big.

I had no problem carrying on 60cm dolls... just the EID was too big and bulky...! 60cm had to be in sitting position, too. I'd also pad them with a sweater or jacket I'd carry-on. I'd try and put them in something that fit under-seat because, as they say in the safety announcements, bags in the overhead can shift around, and I didn't want someone's big heavy bag to maybe crush my doll!

You definitely need a face-protector! Lashes and faceups are the most delicate parts, so it's good to have something that won't be pushing up against it, maybe rubbing on it! --And generally padding and protecting the rest--the joints that move the most, and the fingers and any other parts that could break easily... that is necessary.

I would NOT unpack your dolls and take them out in the cabin... there's no room and they can be damaged and not wrapped well enough when you put them back, etc. Just pack them carefully and keep them that way until you get to where you're going.

I never had any problems going through security. If they start looking hard at your bag, you can tell them it's a doll! That can help them figure out what they are seeing. I've had to do that before. But the security was always good about it. Never had to take the doll out or anything.

I'm not sure how well Wood would fold up and fit in any luggage, though I'm sure they'd fit better than an EID, which is big and stiff.

Box... Hmmm... You could ship doll and box, or just box (would be lighter, but more crush-able with no doll in it... maybe fill it with light stuff like clothes?), or you could check the box if you don't have a second piece of checked luggage or pay extra... but that can almost be as much as shipping... Either way you'd probably need a shipper to protect the box... both shippers and luggage handlers can be hard on luggage and boxes! Think of heavy luggage and boxes getting tossed around and on top of your box.

There is no way you could carry-on a box, I don't think! Measure it all around and check with your carrier, though. It's likely they'd make you check it at the gate, even if their website said it was allowable... There is very little tolerance for what they allow on the plane these days, particularly on full flights.

-----------------------------------

DId you all hear about the Be With You Event running in May? If you get a 27-year doll you will also get a free tiny!

That is so tempting!!!!

Unfortunately, I've got a bunch of layaways going already, so I doubt I can do any more...!!! But it would be a great time to get one of these guys. Free tiny! And the little ones are just so adorable!

14. I had hoped to get free shoes in that last event they had - when I ordered my Star - but that turned out to only be for the tinies. So it's nice to see the big boys finally added to the event!
It tempts me too, but I don't have the money either. Less money this year than last, and I have one lay away already going, and just paid of another. Too many good dolls out there!
But I have been wanting one of those tinies for a while too. Don't know that I could justify getting three! ;) Good deal though!

15. ... we have to justify how many ??? nonono... that coming from the owner of TEN Soo's? lol ... I have wanted a 'funky eye mechanism' doll for ages... and on the 13th I should know if I am comited to another IH doll so... ugh want one >< ... there ARE "priorities" though lol

16. Hahahahhaha! No, I was thinking about the tinies. You get two of them, you get a third for free. You could also just get a free tiny head if you buy just one tiny, but... you would need another body anyway, so why not get two full dolls and get a third for free? lol The logic! It kills! :XD:
I'm going to keep telling myself I don't have the money, and see how far that gets me. ;)

17. ... do these heads work on IH bodies O_O .... >< wait..... NO! ... not now >< damn you >< :doh;)

18. No idea. You may have to find out by buying one! ;)

If you're talking about the little ones.... The big head, I can check.

19. Hey guys. Is YG's email the one posted on the front page of his site? The one he uses for paypal stuff?

20. Yes. I have used it myself. ^__^
