Beauty and Gore Mods?

Jul 13, 2012

    1. Being a person with surgical and injury scars, I can truthfully say that I hate them and don't want to see them on my dolls. My scars remind me of the careless surgeon that didn't close my incision right, the time I thought I had cancer (but didn't), the three surgeries I've had after totaling my ankle, the chicken pox, the boils. Why would I want to celebrate any of that? Why would I want to be reminded of any of those? Others can have their scars and their gore, but I am not one of them.

    2. I think there's no further explanation than gore/scars are beautiful to some people. It may not be to others, but there are non-gore things that each of us as individuals don't care for either.

    3. I have a bunch of different views on what I find beautiful. I love perfect pristine looking dolls but also love seeing scars and stuff. Cuts and bruises and scars to me are some how really beautiful on both dolls and people... I hate that they come with a lot of pain and possibly bad memories. I have no idea why i find them beautiful though.

I also think dolls made to look like ghosts or spirits are incredibly beautiful, I'm more than likely going to have at least 2 one day in the future.

My first doll who is on her way is going to be pretty normal though, I do plan to get some of my birth marks painted on her though, just to make her a little more human and a little more mine. I won't get my scars modded on her though, as I want her to feel more perfect than I feel. so just the marks I'm proud of will find their way on to her.

    4. I really like (well-done) mods of any kind because they give the doll a personal touch, a bit of character. At some gore mods (there's one artist who makes the eyes/mouths look stapled shut) I just sort of go, "OUCH... but... that's awesome. :'D"

    5. I enjoy grotesque and macabre art in drawing and painting, so that love naturally crosses over to the BJD hobby. I think you can find something both repulsive and beautiful. And it certainly adds another layer to the doll.

That said, while I love looking at pictures of these type of dolls, I have yet to work up the guts to do anything like that to my own dolls. xD I'm a good drawer and painter, but a truly terrible sculptor, so I'm a bit scared to try modding. Haha.

    6. I love the gore mods. I think there amazing. I havnt done any myself purly because Im not quite that confident in my artisitic ability. But I think there just as beautiful in there own way. Besides, beauty is very personal and fluctuating.

    7. I'm completely fascinated by gore mods. As it has been said before they're both grotesque and strangely beautiful at the same time. They are what they are, and that is different before anything and I love things that are different.
That being said I haven't made any gore mods on my own dolls, I'm neither that good nor do I have a character that bears scars of the sort. If there was though, I'd probably send him off to someone who could do a proffessional job on him. c:

    8. I love love love any kinds of scars or deformations in real life. Everything from surgical scars, to burn scars, to birth defects, to skeletal deformations, and everything in between. They are absolutely fascinating on an aesthetic level, and I think they're incredibly beautiful. That said, a doll mod of that nature has to be well done for me to be impressed, and deliberate. If part of the doll's skin is peeled away, show us what's under it instead of just painting the area red. If the doll has a scar, give it a bit of depth; I've never seen a scar that was perfectly flush with the skin around it, even counting stretch-marks. Injury, gore, and horror mods are outstanding when done properly, so go for the gold! ^_^ *is morbid*

    9. I personally love seeing all sorts of mods on dolls. Some of the most heavily modded dolls are the most beautiful and unique!

As for scar/gore mods, I don't necessarily think they are always seen as a beauty aspect for the owner of the doll. I think they may be a way to channel the persons own pain or hurt (be it physical or emotional). The doll is an outlet for them. I think all of our dolls are outlets for us in some way or another. That's part of why they are so wonderful. :)

    10. I think that as long as it's well done and the artist clearly put time into their work, it can be beautiful. But then there are those who purposefully try to make it ugly, and that can be evident too.
My key factor is a well done modification. Nothing makes me more sad and upset and disgusted than awful mods, because that just means the person was lazy, undedicated, etc. to do it right and try to manifest their concept properly.

    11. I know that Zombie Sol from Ringdoll is my favorite so it's safe for me to say that I like gore dolls ;)

    12. I agree with these posts. I think that scars can be emotional and therefore invisible and that often times this is just the pattern of experience. Often, it makes us stronger. Also I think that we often seek to find what's unique in us as individuals so things that are different, that make overt what is subtle have appeal. So we like scars or gore mods for those reasons. Dolls are often an expression of our identity or things we wish for in the world so there's a lot of flexibility for expression there. Often the things that are traditionally beautiful are banal and boring so something ugly is often interesting. As Lou Reed said "to some people things look so ugly, to me you know it all looks the same".
My first doll was a Dream of Doll and she is beautiful but for my next doll I'm looking at Doll Chateau because of the highly stylized nature of those dolls and Ring Doll because I like the idea of a doll wearing on the outside some of things we carry within us. But I haven't seen a girl doll that looks how I want so it's likely something that I would have to have customized.

    13. I have to agree with that. I wonder why so many people focus solely on the beauty aspect. If you want to treat doll customisation like a form of art it doesn't need to be beautiful but it has to evoke emotions :)

    14. Heh. I'm not that into gore mods. Yet, I own a Ringdoll Frankenstein--minor, I know, but there's definitely a gore-mod sort of thing going there. It might be a bit different because it's the default of that sculpt, but the end result is the same-- a doll that is not smooth skinned with no blood showing.

Anyway, I think people are into all sorts of things--and "into" meaning the whole gamut from just being curious about something to really going to extremes, to loving it, to hating it but still wanting it for character reasons, to thinking it's beautiful, to thinking it's hideous but still wishing for the look for whatever reason... The idea of "beauty" can be this way, too--very different for everyone and maybe not really "beauty" at all...

People are all so different. Which is good.

    15. Well, he's an undead hottie! In a sexy outfit! With fabulous bone-structure! What's not to love? Ringdolls Sol & Frankenstein are truly the Zombie Pinups of the dolly world. :aheartbea
(In my youth I was one of the original crop of zombie pinups-- you would not believe how many people like that stuff, and it's still going strong-- so, ask the public-at-large why men like to look at foxy chicks lurching around in rotted makeup, fake blood, tooth-blackout & ripped costumes. xD)

    16. Exactly. Nowadays there's such a saturation of typically beautiful dolls that I find myself a little bored of them. To interest me, a doll has to have a certain appealing oddity to it - or just be outright weird. I like to think my dolls are on the latter end of the spectrum. When I customize a doll, I don't think - is this pretty? I just hope it'll convey the character, their personality, their history... and evoke emotions!

    17. I like scar mods because they can show experience.

I myself have many scars and I've learned to cherish them the way some people love their tattoos. Every one is something I beat, or a good memory, like the time I fell hard in a parking lot and my friends took such good care of me, helping me patch myself up, or the childhood chickenpox that nearly killed me but my saintly mother nursed me through it.

I feel the same way about scars on dolls. A scar is a medal from something you overcame, or a reminder of an experience. My doll Kevya has a lot of horrible scars from time as a slave but he's free now, and survived. Fiachra has battle scars, including one on her hip from a fight she had with a wolf, and she killed it with her knife. Lir has a scar on his jaw from the bonding time he spent raising his pet raven, Scratch, when the hatchling took a jab at his eye and missed.

    18. I like scars etc if they are well done and fit the character. My pirate boy has a stitched up eye and I think it adds to his character.

    19. I think gore mods are beautiful because of the time, effort and emotions that went into making them.

    20. I love gore mods! In my opinion, they're just as beautiful. In a way, it's also an ideal of beauty for some people. For others, it might also reflect their dark side. Some might find this attractive, and some might find this unsettling.
