Beauty and Gore Mods?

Jul 13, 2012

    1. I plan on doing a scar mod on one of my dolls myself, I think they're beautiful. It depends on the way it is done however, because I draw the line at zombie mods and such, I can't handle it too well! But a well done mod is something I really appreciate aesthetically. It shows skill and also creativity!

    2. Personally, I don't find such mods to be beautiful, but rather beautifully-made. I can recognize the craftsmanship that has gone into a well-done gore mod, even if it makes me cringe a little! I also believe I have more than enough dolls that fall into the "simply gorgeous" category, and appreciate a doll that falls outside of that stereotype.

Also, I think that for a lot of people, gore mods might elicit revulsion, or curiosity, or sympathy...all of which are very different responses depending on the viewer and the mod. It's also very different from the response you'd get from looking at a "beautiful" doll.

Though I know a lot of people give their characters backstories, sometimes it can be refreshing to have the narrative told through the mere appearance of a doll, rather than explanations. Without having to give a backlog of information to anyone to explain what happened to so-and-so, I like to let people fill in the blanks on their own. I think the relationship between the person viewing a less-than-perfect doll and the doll becomes a little more intimate when the viewer has to draw his or her own conclusions.

    3. To me it is probably a combination of the thing others have already mentioned. I love looking at gore mods and I have sort of always known I will make some on my own "some day". I used to hang out on ConDoll and there is where I first saw some of OneGreyElephants work. And I was doomed, so to speak.
I have always loved dolls for their beauty and perfection, but I am also fascinated with the corruption of that perfection. Worn, broken and discolored dolls have their own charm. Just like people scared by life have theirs. Scars on humans is the things that proves that they are truly people, with a past and a life, and did not just roll of an assembly line at a factory somewhere. It's part of being alive and we all have our scars.
Since dolls in this hobby are so often made to represent people, rather than dolls in their own right, I think most mods of healed scars and such reflect that. It is a way to bring the dolls backgrounds into the picture, literally speaking.

Throughout the BJD-hobby the story behind the dolls, their personality and the dolls own opinions play a big part in how we customize our dolls. At least to me that is probably the biggest difference between this hobby and other types of dolls. For a purely ornamental doll, what shows is all that matters, but for a BJD even scars hidden beneath the clothes, never seen by anyone but the owner, can have a real value.

As for more severe gore mods I think it is more like it's the same thing that makes zombie movies fun and horror comics interesting and all that. We all probably have our different reasons for it, but many people find it fascinating in one way or another. Same as with birth defects, mutations etc. It seems perfectly natural to me that some choose to bring that into their dolls world as well.

I guess it can be called beauty, even if that may not be the original goal.

    4. To each their own. I do like Frankenstein dolls, and some gore mods are really, really awesome! I think it just depends on how well done it is and the back-story.

    5. I am a huge zombie fan and just a horror movie fan in general! I am very new to the BJD world but I can honestly say, I would LOVE to see a gore/zombie type doll...how cool. Now I am going to have to search through and see what I can find!! Maybe I'll make one of my future dolls a gore doll!! Good post =)

    6. I totally love modding looks on dolls. I think that if they are done well they look great. Scaring can add to the doll's charactor and give it something extra. I too am not big on gore. I do applaud the art of it though.

    7. I think a lot of the appeal of gore dolls for me comes from the amount of skill I know an artist would need to complete it. I can look at bruises, sores and blood on dolls, in paintings or in SFX makeup, but feel very uncomfortable with it in real life. I think it's mostly an art thing.

    8. I have the most beautiful dolls and completely modded ones that are totally scarred and stiched and I like them both in different ways

    9. Exactly this!! I think that's why i'm kind of in love with Pukifee PongPong. His odd little open mouth and wee little teethies sticking out. Yes, he's a happy guy and cute! But, it's really a different sort of sculpt. I think he would look lovely animalized with little ram horns. To me this would just be lovely and unusual. These dolls are such an art form, from the sculpts we pick, to how we dress them and pose them.

I can't agree more. Art is supposed to evoke emotions.

This might also be the reason i adore the little Monster High dolls.. they are just so unusual and weird (in a great way)

    10. Well said Aliera :) I feel the same way, the gore sometimes can be a little to much, but whatever floats people`s goat`s I guess!
I myself don`t mind tattoos or scars or piercings, those can be quite interesting at times, anybody have a favorite type of mod

    11. 8blkpaws, I have to agree with you 100%. I'm not into gore, so I can't see the beauty in it, but I know others do which is cool. I do like seeing tattoos moded on dolls, though...I think some are really awesome!

    12. I like seeing scars or other injury mods on dolls. I think that it really helps with their stories and I just gravitate towards things like that and angst.

    13. I admire the skill, to design and create gore mods, but I would never want to own one. As some can look just way too scary!

    14. I don't agree that my dolls represent my ideas of beauty. To me, my dolls represent what I find interesting or alluring (which can mean 'beautiful', but does not always!).

I enjoy scars on dolls, but not heavier gore mods. Usually, I find very heavy gore mods drastically decrease my interest in a character, because they become a focal point and result in the character feeling very one-dimensional. To be honest, some scar mods make me feel the same way ('wing-removal' scars, extreme 'whipping' scars, etc).

I will eventually own some dolls with scars. I don't think I'll ever own any with gore mods, though.

    15. The creepiest doll I have (and plan to ever have) is just a Soom Photon Reaper\Resinsoul hybrid. He's a skeleton man. I think he's gorgeous, but then again, I am 'the bone girl'. I will dig up any kind of bones I can find sticking out of the ground, or on the beach, or wherever. I've never done a gore MOD (yet!) but I'm pretty damn good at gore makeup for humans, and I enjoy doing it quite a bit. I don't know why. They're something about getting it right, making it look real, that I just love. And I don't mind real gore that much, though I wouldn't say I find it beautiful. It's just... part of life and death. Whatever. My boyfriend has fantasies about elaborately modded dolls with robotic or clockwork parts and heavy gore mods, mostly burns, and I know it's just a part of what makes those characters of his who they are... They are not beautiful. Most of those characters are twisted individuals, mostly through trauma, and maybe that evolution is beautiful in its own way... So any character who is changed by some trauma involving serious scars or injuries can be an interesting beauty, maybe. IT's hard to explain...

I think mostly gore mods just add onto the character and what they've been though and how it made them who they are. It is not necessarily 'beautiful'. But it can be, in its own way, I think.

    16. I'm one of the people who really loves the gore mods instead of the pretty face-ups, they're nice but not my thing, and no matter what i do i'll Always end up with a gore/bloody look for my dolls, though i like looking at the pretty ones too (not that the gore ones aren't pretty) but they're simply not for me.

    17. I prefer when people don't actually carve or scar the doll. I have seen someone use Elmer glue and let it dry then seal it. I don't know if they colored the glue or continued a faceup after sealing to give the scar some realism. I like scar gore mods if it isn't to drastic. I am thinking of doing one. I don't know.

    18. I think, if you spent your own hard earned money on your own doll. Do whatever the heck you want to it.
But realistically don't be surprised when you can sell your doll for the price of a new doll when you added a bunch of gore mods. It appeals to certain people which happens to be a smaller group than to people who prefer "pretty" face ups. I did a gore mod for my friends doll and she is all into that and loves it. I personally prefer Kawaii stuff. Everyone is different.

    19. Personally I just can't even look at gore or badly scared dolls. If a scar is done very well, I might like it but can't enjoy seeing dolls that are bloody or look like the walking dead. I don't like to see gore in real life, so don't like it for my dolls either.

    20. I personally don't like them...it makes me cringe. I don't deal well with real-life gores, and do not do well looking them on dolls too.
