Best dome height for BJD eyes?

Feb 10, 2023

    1. I always have trouble deciding what dome height to get for my dolls. Sometimes I can’t even tell the difference, but I do know if it’s too high it feels harder to move around.
What dome height do you usually get for your eyes?

    2. This will vary by your dolls eye wells, most CAN take high dome but not all. Then after seeing if high dome fit, you'll need to decide by your preference. High dome are a little harder to position, but have more "depth" to them for photos. While low dome are easier to position and look the same irl as high dome, but a little less deep in photos :)

    3. See, I disagree. Historically most of mine could not take high dome. A specific eye shape which is usually more round and open and often on dolls with larger eyes seems more likely to work with a higher dome.
My go to is usually something which is not a super high (somewhat conical over the pupil) nor super low (nearly flat) dome shape because it's most versatile.

    4. I have to vote for low dome too. The dolls that can take high dome eyes need deep eye wells AND big eyes, because unless the dome can stick out of the eye there will always be an awkward gap. And when it sticks out like that it can quickly look weird, like the eyes are bulging out of the skull.

Ideally the eye is slightly curved, with a slightly protruding dome on top. The most depth comes from a mix of materials used, and how the iris was made/how deep it is. Just putting a big dome on top is usually not enough and looks awkward too.

    5. A high dome isn't what produces the depth in eyes---the depth comes from how deeply the iris and pupil sit in the eye. A low dome is easier to maneuver and sita in the eyewells way better.

    6. I'm another who does not like high domes, as they don't fit in the majority of my dolls. Low domes have worked in every doll I've owned, and medium works in many. And for the ones who can wear high, I don't like that bulging bump.

    7. Low dome for sure~
High dome makes eyes pushed backward, hard to position, looks weird with the gap and creates shadow. Not a fan of the bulging eyes also for my big eyed dolls ;)

    8. High domes usually work best in 18-22mm eyed dolls.

Low domes are best for anything smaller most of the time. Even then, the shape of the eye well and the shape of the eye might not match up. Some dolls need wider flatter corneas and some need really roundy corneas.

I don't mind beveling my dolls eye sockets to fit what I want them to fit, but it's usually just a lot of small sanding adjustments. For dolls that are even fussier to fit, I like silicone. They don't have all the clarity of glass or urethane but I have one doll whose so hard to fit, silicone is all that works 'cause the eye can really squish in there. Otherwise you can't tell he has eyes at all.

    9. I don't like high dome eyes for any of my dolls, because they always seem to make the dolls look cross-eyed in pictures, and in a lot of instances tey can only be set itnto the eye socket looking straight forward, as the dome interfered with puttign them in any other position.

    10. I prefer low-dome eyes, and also prefer low profile, flat back eyes mostly because most of my dolls have narrow shaped eyes and also some of those are very small eye-openings. I mostly don't like how the higher dome stick-out off the eye opening from profile and cast really weird shadows depending on the doll's eye shape, even in my larger/rounder-shaped-eyed dolls. Most of the older glass eyes I own are super old, so sadly a lot of them have higher than life domes, but I love glass eyes in general. Except for the floating pupil look that "supposedly" properly made glass eyes have, because that's just not realistic by any stretch of the imagination (the pupil is an opening/hole, not a floating "sticker/jewel" on top of the iris) and it just rubs me the wrong way -- I'm speaking of "human" looking glass eyes, not fantasy ones. However, glass eyes with low domes, low profiles and flat backs would be my preference, if those were a popular thing. The closest I've gotten are vintage flatback oval doll glass eyes, but the irises are huge! Not as huge as "modern" glass eyes were for BJD in the earlier years of modern BJD, but still too huge for my intended purposes -- they are inexpensive, but those giant irises. >_>;;

    11. Since the latest trend is increasingly increasing due to the latest trend, it is important than the size of FIG.If you think of human eyes are not fried.Low~ Mi-mi is good at the same time. But I don't care about 20 mm or 22mm.

    12. Interesting, I thought there'd be more support for high-domed eyes. I currently own dolls that wear 16mm size and have large eyes, so high domes fit well in them. But BJD sculpting trends have changed a lot - it seems there are more dolls now with narrow, small eyes not suitable to wear high domes. I'll be getting some dolls with smaller eyewells later this year, so I might change my opinions later on.

I personally prefer high-domed eyes if a doll's eyewells can accommodate it. I think the eyes are the #1 part of the doll that give it lifelikeness, so I'm deeply interested in how to make a doll's gaze as realistic as humans, even if other things like eye colour or shape aren't humanlike.

I've taken hundreds of photos of my dolls and tried all kinds of eyes in them. Right now, I think high domes are more effective at capturing both glow and, more importantly, highlight. IMHO, the highlight in an eye (ie. the point/smudge of bright light that tends to hover over the pupil and iris) is what gives the doll the most verisimilitude and lifelikeness, even more than iris colour intensity, clarity or depth. While low domes can definitely capture a highlight, high domes do so more reliably because they have greater surface area and tend to protrude out more from the eyewell.

So I prefer to have my dolls in high-domed eyes if they can wear them. I wrote a giant post about this at my personal BJD blog. I might be wrong about my theories and might change my mind later when I get some dolls with smaller eyes. So I'd love to hear other people's thoughts too!
