1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJD and other hobbies

Apr 30, 2011

    1. Do you haveanother hobby aside from doll collection and customisation?
I’m not sure about that’s how I would define my other activities. Theword philosopher means lover of wisdom and in that vein I constantly readphilosophy, art criticism and literature. As an artist I spend a lot of time takingphotographs, developing film, printing in the darkroom, etc (and not dollystuff). I travel to other cities to visit museums to see art. I used to listento a lot of music until I developed tinnitus and occasionally go to the operasince it’s not amplified music. I still watch a lot of movies. All of thesethings have to do with understanding the world, its culture and finding myplace in it. They’re serious and not typically relaxing in the way we usuallythink of hobbies. I do get great pleasure from my intellect so those pursuitshave their own reward. My doll thing is more of a hobby and as a side interestallows me to explore things I normally wouldn’t artistically and is not asserious.

How do comments such as the above affect your experience in the hobby of yourchoice, and in the doll collection hobby?
(By which I mean, do the comments make yousecond-guess your other hobby, or do they not affect you in any way? Do theymake your experiences in the BJD hobby less enjoyable by creating a hostileatmosphere, or do you see them just as a commentary on the different wayspeople spend their money? Or anything else, as well.)
I thinkmost of what people spend their lives doing is a complete and utter waste oftime. There are so many forms of media and objects and people tend to obsess onsomething and focus on that. One of the things I find interesting about the BJDcommunity is the inherent creativity that people put into it. I thinkactivities that are more active are better than those that are passive. Sopainting dolls and making stories is far better to me than watching TV orsurfing the internet. So comments other people make have zero effect on me. Idon’t begrudge people their hobbies either.

If you don't have another hobby, what is your opinion on how those commentsaffect the BJD community?
      (See explanation above)

If you have a spouse/SO, or someone close to you who has another hobby, haveyou used that hobby to defend your own? (Either to others or to yourself.)My SO has similar interests as myself concerning reading/music/art and whileshe didn’t quite understand the bjd thing I think she accepted it as part of my“eclectic” nature. She’s more into classical culture (old master painting, opera etc) while I’m more into contemporary art and punk and avant garde music. So there’s differences there already. The expense I think was the hardest thingto deal with for her but we don’t live together and don’t share any expenses soeventually she got used to it. After a while she also learned to accept Celine.During the last few months I’ve been so busy with school that I wasn’t takingCeline out at all and she was picked her up and said “See this is how man are, they shower with you attention during the honeymoon period then they get busyall the time and ignore you.” That was pretty funny. She doesn’t have a hobbythat I could really compare but it comes down to what people want to spendtheir money on.

Do you think that attitude is justifiable? Why/Why not?

You could make arguments against any hobby so I think if you need to play tit for tat then it’s completely justified. It'd be nicer if people could live and let live. The world would be boring if we all did the same thing.

    2. I'm kind of confused by the beginning post of this thread. The statement that "this person has (insert hobby) and I have dolls" doesn't show any value judgement at all. It's just an observation.

Frankly, dolls are a secondary hobby for me. My main hobbies are drawing and reading. I think that there is a perception that doll owners are a little eccentric or dotty or that doll collecting is "creepy" and that's a bit annoying, but it doesn't bother me much and I don't even especially care or want to change people's minds on the matter.

    3. Do you have another hobby aside from doll collection and customisation? If yes, what is it?
I do gunpla. I collect and mod LBXs and gundams. I play Cardfight!! Vanguard and cross stitch :)

How do comments such as the above affect your experience in the hobby of your choice, and in the doll collection hobby?
I've had the good fortune of not encountering comments that'd make me feel bad about any of my hobbies. Either because I'm new to all of them and/or I ignore such a side. At any rate, I highly doubt I'd be affected by comments since I'm in these hobbies for myself and as long as I'm thoroughly enjoying them, I'll be happy.

If you have a spouse/SO, or someone close to you who has another hobby, have you used that hobby to defend your own?
Absolutely no one, much to my dismay. Goodness knows I'd love to be able to share my hobbies with someone. Regardless of price, I know well that having a hobby is a person's form of release / relaxation. It's something important. If they're someone close to me, they should know that. Therefore, neither of us should find the need to explain ourselves to each other. :\

    4. I have other hobbies. I do not own a formal bjd, so I feel okay, just excited that I will have a lovely bjd or two eventually, and I anticipate it.
Im private with what I do, the few times people question my tastes in dolls, or proclivities, it goes right over my head.
I dont have a spouse or so, just an offspring, so no guy to compete or complain.
When you march to your own drum, you stop listening to all others.

    5. Do you have another hobby aside from doll collection and customisation? If yes, what is it?
      Making video game mods.

How do comments such as the above affect your experience in the hobby of your choice, and in the doll collection hobby?
I usually let it slide, so they don't really affect me.

If you have a spouse/SO, or someone close to you who has another hobby, have you used that hobby to defend your own?
I don't have to, thankfully. My partner is incredibly open-minded about a lot of things.

    6. I think the OP is reading way too much into such comments. I don't think most people are being judgmental at all. They are just saying that some people like X, Y, or Z and others like bjds. Bjds are only exciting if you like them. Otherwise they are just another interest people can have.

Do you have another hobby aside from doll collection and customisation?
      Sure.

      If yes, what is it?
Crafts, Comics/Manga, Costuming/Cosplay, Art, Books, bunch of stuff.

How do comments such as the above affect your experience in the hobby of your choice, and in the doll collection hobby? (By which I mean, do the comments make you second-guess your other hobby, or do they not affect you in any way? Do they make your experiences in the BJD hobby less enjoyable by creating a hostile atmosphere, or do you see them just as a commentary on the different ways people spend their money? Or anything else, as well.)
They don't affect me at all. I think people are just talking about different ways people spend their money.

If you don't have another hobby, what is your opinion on how those comments affect the BJD community?

If you have a spouse/SO, or someone close to you who has another hobby, have you used that hobby to defend your own? (Either to others or to yourself.)
No, but I do think that some people spend money on dolls and other people spend money on whatever they are into... It's just what happens. No biggie.

Do you think that attitude is justifiable? Why/Why not?
