BJD worth $5000: have you seen one?

Jan 6, 2010

    1. Volks does charity events, as others have mentioned, and a tanned Reisner sold for 710,000 yen. I also saw a One-Off Suiginto from that same Dolpa sell on Y!J Auctions for 590,000 yen. And, a friend of a friend paid about 600,000 for a Charity Event Ami Ayase.

Those dolls are certainly out of reach for me, and I cannot admit to understanding spending that kind of money on a doll at this point, but as long as they are happy then I am happy for them.

    2. Volks has a new One Off doll, a collaboration of Volks, Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Disney. Converted to US, she's about $5,600.00.
For someone who is a collector of all three companies it's a perfect dolly trifecta.

    3. On ebay there is always Volks Dolls going in the 2-3k range.
This seller is asking $5,000 for one at the moment: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LIMITED-VOL...28?pt=US_Dolls_Bears_Toys&hash=item1e69e9efc4

$5000 is a lot of money (when you're a broke 20 something year old) and there is so much you can get with that kind of money.
But to collectors of all kinds, money isn't what they worry about. Its about making their collection amazing or just having something they desire.

When I decided what dolls to add to my doll family, I just said if I fall for a doll that is really expensive I'll just save up as long as it takes.
Thankfully, my next project is in the $600 range.

Is it worth it to spend that much on a doll? Depends on how much money you have to spare.
And if it bring you happiness, then sure why not. :)

Would I spend that much (even if I had that kinda money to play with?) I think $1000 would be my absolute limit on just one doll - so no.

    4. To be honest, $5000 is a lot of money regardless of your financial situation ;). But, Ebay has always been flooded with sellers asking ridiculous prices. (really, I have never seen a Soom Monthly being sold for $4000)
I won't say that Amy Ayase is a cheap doll, because she isn't, but I can't believe that her after market price really is $5000. I remember when I was searching for my Williams that there used to be a few of them for sale on Ebay, and all of them were at least $1000 above the general asking price.

      tl;dr
Ebay isn't a great place to get a feel for the value of dolls.

    5. I agree with you Silk! A lot of it is 2nd hand market scalping.

    6. Ebay will be my last resort for searching dolls. I feel that the sellers are just simply charging at very high rate, making fool the buyer, and assuming buyer does not know the current value Even in Y!J the same doll does not cost that much.

    7. It's great when people are able to soend that much money on such a unique doll. But I would never spend more than $1000 on a doll and even that is an absolute exception. There are cheaper ways to get a OOAK doll.

    8. I adore this doll, and I wish I could have afforded it as I'm a massive Baby fan and I love Disney, too! Whoever purchased it is so lucky!

I personally wouldn't pay over $1000 for a doll, but I can't dispute that people who do pay that much are overpaying... dolls are worth whatever people will pay and it looks like there's plenty of individuals out there who don't mind dropping that kind of cash.

    9. I've seen bjds at ridiculous prices but they'll never be worth their asking price to me.

    10. I haven't. The most expensive doll that I came across is a Trinity doll selling at $2K+

    11. the most expensive that i come across so far is this.

$5000 for a doll is pretty ridiculous >.< my family will probably kill me if i bought a doll with that price. i limit myself to $800 and thats it.

    12. Awesome. I am on eBay a lot but I never saw such auctions!

I actually advocate inflating doll prices on eBay because recently a lot of vintage and antique dolls collapsed in price because of low eBay pricing (low balling on eBay). Some collectors ended up selling some vintage dolls at less than half of what they paid to acquire the dolls. We don't want that to happen to resin BJDs :), so, do not low ball BJDs on ebay! The price could spiral downwards, we will all be sorry :|. It's actually very good that somebody is asking for $5000 for Ami Ayase and $4000 for a Soom MD although we know these may not sell at those prices. At least, they are not asking for $500.

    13. THIS! It's always nice to see the bigger picture instead of immediately thinking high prices in the secondary market is bad because I can't afford it. The high prices are only for a few dolls anyway. They ARE frustrating if you are looking for that particular doll, but that's just life. And many people do not set their prices super-high and will sell more reasonably (of course those sales are usually hard to find and end quickly because they are a good deal). It's just the the big prices seem to get the attention.

High prices for charity auctions is also a very good thing. The point is to make a lot of money for charity... so this is all win. And those who might carp at the prices are just being a bit too self-centered. The people offering the doll are giving all that money to the charity, the person buying, yes, they will have the doll, but they are often willing to pay so much because they know the money is going to charity. It's really a lovely thing.

High prices that are set by the sellers-- they are allowed, and they are usually NOT indicative of market prices. Some owners don't really want to sell, but will take a lot of money if they can get it. Some of them are actually in business to make money. If they can manage to find the right buyer, that's what they want because they need to make profit if it's a business. Some owners may wish to make the most money they can because they have expenses they need it for, or even more dolls to buy... Or they, themselves, bought the doll for a high price and just want to try and get it back... So the whole idea of people being evil and scalping dolls doesn't really apply. People are allowed to set prices. If it doesn't sell, it doesn't sell. It's up to the buyer for that!

Kaye Wiggs Ebay auction--- Turns out that the highest TWO bidders flaked out so the seller sold the doll privately. Price unknown. That's the problem with Ebay. Also, it shows that you never know about any of the prices we see for these auctions! They might not even turn out to be the real price that is paid... (because of crazy bidders who back out or whatever).

    14. I have only seen one that was $1,000 but that doll was HUGE! It was the size of a small child.

    15. I'd never spend more than half of what I earn a month on a Doll. I have another hobby (reptile keeping) that is less costly than this one, but takes more care. I'd rather have $5000 spent on vet bills, food and new things for my lizards than on a doll.

I'll never see a doll that is, in my opinion, worth $5000. I'm not a Volks fan, either, so I'd never even buy a $300 one.

    16. April The case of the Kaye Wiggs auction is interesting. I can't imagine what the seller felt when the price hit 21K. The doll has remarkably beautiful freckles. I've only seen antique French and Marina Bychkova (Enchanged) dolls sell above 10K and some antique French dolls sell above 20K. Many antique French dolls sell comfortably above $5K or between 3-5K. If I have the money, I'd prefer to get an antique French doll at $5K rather than a contemporary resin doll.

I am on eBay a lot these days, bargain hunting for American Girl Doll accessories. :sweat eBay is responsible for price collapse of many different types of dolls . I feel that the BJD community must know about this. Last year, I saw a Volks SD 16 girl's head with original eyes and makeup sell for $60 with Free Shipping. The seller did not put a reserve price. The word used by economists to describe this type of action is "dumping". As a BJD owner, I was upset. I do not collect resin girl dolls, although I wanted to rescue the head. As a BJD owner, this is what I don't want to see happen. If other owners do this, the price collapses not just for this head but will likely affect other sculpts. I prefer to see some price inflation for BJDs on eBay rather than the other way. This is why I think it's good that some sellers have pegged the price of certain resin dolls at an inflated price. It's a reminder to buyers, sellers and collectors of other types of dolls worldwide that resin Asian BJDs never came cheap. :|

    17. I've never seen one and I feel like I could personally never justify the 5,000 dollar price tag on anything other than a car payment or a house.
