It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. BJD worth $5000: have you seen one?

Jan 6, 2010

    1. I'm sorry, this statement confuses me. Are you saying only Volks dolls are above the $300 threshold?

    2. There are many antique bisque head French dolls, besides Jumeau, that sell for way, way over the $5,000.00 mark. In fact the most expensive bisque head French doll, A. Marque, sold for well over $200,000. I would think having dolls such as that would be a major responsibility. I agree when someone mentioned that earlier. I've had the expensive French girls in my former life LOL and can tell you, it was a big responsibility and I certainly couldn't take them out to redress, rewig or take their eyes out to play with so I sold them all off. I'm at that stage of my life to enjoy my much loved bjd's.

I've seen many bjd's go for well over $5,000.00. Kaye Wiggs, an Australian doll artist, has sold more than one of her lovely girls for over this amount along with a number of other artists. Dolls sell for the prices people are willing to pay for them. There is the asking price which means nothing. It's the selling price that tells the story. You can ask anything for a doll but what someone lays out their hard earned cash for sets the standard.

    3. I've got a roughly $500-$600 doll I love very much.

If I had the money and the $5,000 doll really struck my fancy, I don't see why not.

    4. I have seen multiple dolls sell for high prices, like kaye wiggs etc. Also I have seen 1:1 size BJD/giant Dollfie Dream style that sell for nearly $5k.

Personally I don't think I could ever justify spending so much on a luxury item. The most I think I'd spend is about $1500 but then again I love my Volks and their prices for their dolls on the newer bodies just keeps going up. :/ maybe in the future if I have lots of disposable income my limit might rise, but for now I'll continue to be stingy with my dolls.

    5. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if I did XD

    6. I just saw one on a doll (manufacturer) website the other day listed for $9,999 USD.
It was limited (to only 5, if I remember correctly) but I still thought that was crazy outrageous.

    7. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not, but as of right now there are two Volks Sabers on Ebay listed at $12,000 and $10,000 each. If you don't believe me just search for 'Volks Saber DD Fate Stay Night' and you should find them.... although I don't think anyone in their right mind would pay that much (especially since there are still other places to get those dolls that are a LOT cheaper then that). ^^;

    8. Wow, I can see how a doll can get that expensive, especially if they're limited, but I would never buy one that expensive. In fact, when I buy dolls, I never buy them unless there's some sort of sale, and most of the time, I buy them second-hand. I don't have a lot of money, and even if I find one that's expensive that I want, I just download the picture and dream up how I can make one with some of the same traits :)

    9. It's quite funny. I read to the front of this thread today, and realised how much things have kinda changed in the past couple of years... It seemed that people were a bit 'wow'ed' by dolls over $1500 at that point, but now, they seem to be everywhere on the MP- maybe with the more steady stream of LE dolls rolling through?

Anyway, Bermann's are still worth near the $5000 mark I think, and I have seen a few more go at that price. I just can't remember what- I tried very hard not to look at them in case I liked them haha.

I personally have spent an absolute MINT on a lot of my dolls, but... I think $5000 might be a bit too much for me. But then again, when I came to this hobby, some dolls for $500 seemed like a 'OMG I'M NEVER SPENDING THAT MUCH' amount, and now, I umm and arr, but don't full on pass out, at a $2000 doll. *shrug* Who knows!

    10. The most expensive I've seen (not in person) is a little over $2000 , and I thought THAT was crazy! I didn't think dolls over $5000 existed, wow. I'd NEVER spend more than maybe $700 on a doll.

    11. I have seen some listed on eBay for much more than that. Craaazy!!!

    12. Woah not yet ! 5000 is just too much for me to part with imo

    13. Not yet. But wow, $5000 is a lot for a doll.

    14. I'm surprised no one mentioned Suigintou yet. She's got to be the most expensive doll among the Rozenmaiden series. Twice as more expensive than the other characters like Shinku or Suiseiseki. I once saw a brand new that wasn't opened yet it was almost $3000. I think if you customize your doll, including the body, it will very well go over $5000.

    15. Quite often, that comes up when the doll is sold out. I don't know why the company does that.

    16. There is no such animal.

    17. I've only seen OOAK artist dolls go for that much or more, but not a manufactured BJD. However, there are so many amazing dolls out there that I would never spend 5k on one--unless I had so much money that I didn't have to save up to spend that much on a doll. Besides, nobody outside the hobby would ever think that was money well spent!

    18. The only one doll I've seen that states that it could be worth $5000 was a DD Sasara Kusugawa but that was on eBay and from other sources stating that she could be worth up to that much with her fullset and being in almost new condition. And technically DD aren't considered BJD by most. But, for me, that's the only doll I've seen at that high of price, ever. I would never ever think any BJD would be worth $5000 unless they had some kind of smart device in them that allowed them to transform into a computer or something like that. Which, obviously, doesn't exist. $5000, that's just absurd, in my opinion. That kind of price for a BJD would never be worth it for me. I could get more important things with $5000 that I would actually need. Dolls are awesome but I would never ever spend that much on one. Ever.

    19. One of the things that affect doll prices that I haven't seen here is the economy in various parts of the world. When the Japanese stock market began to drop from its highs some years ago, Japanese collectors were buying anything collectible that might keep its value over time. They wanted the best and didn't care what they had to spend to get it. The result was that antique doll and bear prices went through the roof.

I see the same thing happening now with Russian buyers driving the market. There is a lot of money floating around but an uncertain economy. Most of the BJD artists & retailers I know are selling a large portion of their dolls in Russia. Collectors want the best and are willing to pay for it. It does push the price up for everyone, but that's part of being in a world economy with instant access through internet sales. I agree with Admiral's Closet. I read earlier posts and found a big difference in the amounts and attitudes of collectors about "how much is too much".

    20. I've not seen a $5,000 doll but I've also not been into the hobby that long. I think if I did see a doll for that price that I wanted I would laugh and laugh and laugh... then try to find a new sculpt for $300-900 that was similar enough to make me happy.
