1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BJDs in Music (art and covers)

Jan 19, 2024

    1. Hello, lovely folks:

I recently saw an older thread about BJDs in movies and thought... well, aren't there BJDs in music covers as well? And perhaps just as a funny coincidence, one of my all-time favourite bands, Dir en Grey, is coming up with a single with what seems to be a BJD on the cover.

I am not good enough to figure out which company she came from, but I thought it was super cool to see one popping up so serendipitously. If you know (or have any idea) which sculpt this is, I'd love to know!

And since I'm starting this thread, there are two more "BJDs in music" that I can think of on the top of my head:

      1. Mylène Farmer and her 2008 album art for "Point de suture"

and 2. Kerli in the music video "Walking on air", also in 2008 , with this doll

I am sure there must be others. Do you know of any others?
And if you know which sculpts these lovely gals are, definitely let me know!

    2. I was thinking the same thing when I saw this cover

    3. Same here. It was the first thought that came to my head when I first saw the single's art cover. That caught my attention was the dolls hand position (thumb). I've never seen a hand like this. Maybe this could be a clue? It could also be an artist doll.

    4. If you search for Amazarashi's "Deserving of Life" music video, you'll find a lot of dolls (including BJDs) in there. Exercise discretion when watching though, because it's meant to tie-in with a story of NieR: Automata that involved destroying dolls.

    5. I remember that the doll in the Kerli video for “Walking on Air” is a DIM Flora. That doll was actually painted by Pepstar! Kerli had another video for her song “Tea Party” which featured Goodreau dolls. I had noticed the Mylène Farmer cover too!
A BJD also featured randomly in Satyricon’s video for their song “K.I.N.G”. Trying to think if there are any others now!

    6. The hand reminds me of those Ringdoll hands? I don't know their sculpts well enough to guess if it actually is a Ringdoll or not, though.

I remember Kerli's doll videos well, I had just found out about bjds and probably thought that *whoa a sign!!!* :sweat

Last summer, I saw a Japanese puppet performance where the musician had a bunch of dolls on the stage with them (including a custom Blythe) - while they do make noise instruments out of toys and own at least one BJD, I don't think they use the latter for music purposes... Still cool to stumble upon another doll person in the wild!

    7. That's super cool! Never thought it would be a DIM doll (now that they're kinda gone... bummer...)

I did find out more about the Mylène Farmer doll, though. It's an artist doll made by Japanese artist Etsuko Miura. There's even an interview about it in the past! ( Stéphane du Mesnildot Japanese Blog 東京の奇妙な日々: Etsuko Miura, le frisson des poupées - in French. Nudity in the background of the page.) I think Miura's dolls are super cool, but it's not for everyone.

    8. @SPhosphate To add a little bit of trivia: I believe the doll was supplied via The JunkySpot and I think that they were in a sort of time crunch to get the doll painted by Pepstar and delivered to Kerli’s team in time for the video filming! I think there were two dolls the painted one and a blank one for the CGI part. I was a huge fan of Kerli and similar artists way back when so I always remembered a few of these little facts… there might be some more info out there on DOA or dA if you want to have a dig.

Thanks for finding some info about the Mylène Farmer doll as I had wondered about that <3

    9. It might be "creator I like" bias, but the doll on the Dir En Gray cover reminds me of Shinydoll! They are also from Japan and their hands are posed similarly.

    10. Oh, by the way, here's another "BJD music video"!
Sure, it's a fan vid that was used to promote a steampunk event in Toronto back in 2007, but it's got a lot of dolls in there! I wonder if there is anyone here on DoA whose dolls were captured for all posterity in this video?

    11. What a time capsule! If only they'd taken better close-ups of the dolls!! Oh well, I guess you can't have everything...

    12. Holy nostalgia! I remember watching this when getting into steampunk stuff. For some reason I didn't remember the dolls. Great find!

    13. I believe Grimes has an album cover with a Popovy! I think they even did a special custom design for her cover art.

    14. Yes, and their discontinued sculpt Quetzal was a homage to a fav musician of mine: FKA twigs.
They also gave two OOAK to J.P. Gaultier.

    15. This one is almost cheating (almost).
Ali Project's Seishoujo Ryouiki was the second OP for "Rosen Maiden". But it does have BJDs in the official music video! They don't seem to be Volks, which surprises me.

      But, which ones were they?

    16. Nice find!
They should show more dolls in music videos.
Katy Perry owns a Pasha Pasha doll and I would love to see her in videos.

    17. I agree with you!
I didn't know Katy Perry has a Pasha Pasha! It would be so cool to see if she'll ever show off her doll!

    18. You can see it on the websites "about" section. Even Demi Moore owns one. :wiggle

    19. The band Deuxvolt used my photography of my (long since rehomed), Fairyland boys for the cover of their album Union of Opposites years and years ago. If you google it, you can still find it, I think. :)
