It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

BlueFairy Mini (Tiny fairy) discussion Part 1

Jun 18, 2005

    1. The site doesn't have measurements for them, and I don't know what I could compare them to.

Does anyone have measurements for the Tiny Fairy molds? Or what wigs would fit them?

      Thank you in advance.

    2. big thanks from me too!

    3. Just at a side note, BF's fit into pretty much any MSD sized clothing that is out there. Dollmore and luts clothes are all a little big on them, as they are so lithe, but there are few places I have found that are too small for them. This is for speaking for boy's clothes. Some places, like DoD, have different sizes for their girl mold and so different sizes for the clothes they sell. I don't know it that helps, but there you go!

    4. I dont know if i could afford one But i sure would like to see how they r in person

    5. Greetings! 'tis I, a person of very little brain, seeking the many people of more than adequate brain in this forum (and there seems to be a large majority of them here :) )

I wish to say that I am a pro at this unique and beautiful hobby, but ALAS, that would be lying. So- in order to maybe have a chance to fatten up my sadly lacking noodles, I have summoned up what little courage I have (for I am a coward as well) to ask you people to please answer my extensive list of questions.

To inform the general public, I have no BJDs at ALL. And I have had those jittery butterflies in my tummy the moment I first lay eyes on one such lovely creature. After a year's worth of extensive research and thought, I have decided that a BlueFairy model would be my first. HOWEVER! :sweat I stick out in a cround of BJD owners like a sore thumb, and i need some PROFESSIONAL ADVICE, hence the title.

      My questions-
Are the eyes glued in for the regular TinyFairy models?
Do the joints snap without some alterations on the lucky owner's part?
In your opinion, are they good models as compared to some well-knowns, like the Volks' SD lineup?
Are they compatible with other company makes? If so, which?
What would the resin color/quality be as described by Volk's skintones? Normal? Sunlight? Perhaps BW? Would it be considered old quality or pureskin?
And last but certainly not least, is the poseability considered 'adequate'?

I sincerely hope none of you familiars to this forum are annoyed at such newbie-ish questions, and I tremble at the thought that you might be (heavens forbid) ANNOYED by me ??? :o :...(

I would be most grateful if the honorable members of this awesome forum would answer these pitiful questions and help my first BJD to be a success.

With good intentions, first-timer's nervousness and a hopeful heart,
      Truffles.

    6. well i can't help with the Blue fairies cos i don't own one.

      1. usually doll eyes are held in the head with putty. Limited from volks have them glued in

      2. joints snapping??? Er that shouldn't happen unless the resin is very brittle and u have applied a very very large force on it.

      3. Everyone has their preference in types. There is no good or bad company except those who scam like lolidoll. I luv volks but can't justify the price so i prefer Luts instead. Others don't like Volks at all, some only collect volks. Depend on the owner.

      4. what type of compaitible do u mean? sharing clothes or looking in scale. As far as i know, BF dolls are in scale with other dolls. If they are 45cm then they can share clothes with DZ and taller MSDs, if 43cm then they can share with most of the other MSDs. Give and take of course.

      5. each company has a different skin tone. So this is unanswerable. Preference again, sunlight, beauty white, pureskin & normal skin vary from company to company. Nothing matches 100% not even the same company.

      6. can't answer, posing can always be altered and modded and wiring and sueding so these are problems that can be solved easily.

I got a question: do u actually want a Volks or a BF? U keep comparing to Volks and a fair few questions are about comparing with volks, I'm not trying to be rude, but if u like BF then u don't need to kno what the skin type is called by Volks terms. Maybe wording it withoug 'volks' is a good start.

    7. Are the eyes glued in for the regular TinyFairy models?

--> No, there is a eye paste, a little like play-doh. (See thread "Inside the head of a Bluefairy" - or something like that)

Do the joints snap without some alterations on the lucky owner's part?

      --> Snap? I fear I don't understand your question.

In your opinion, are they good models as compared to some well-knowns, like the Volks' SD lineup?

--> I would compare TF to MSD sized dolls rather than SDs. I know my Yuki [Xiao] poses like a charm and is soooo kawaii! She's got the better of me!

Are they compatible with other company makes? If so, which?

--> Wouldn't know, maybe Luts Kid Delfs? Angelregion for sure, as they are a very similar mold. BF TF are thinner than other MSDs. They can wear Dollheart, Kid Delf, Minifee... clothes. I hear Volks MSD are a little big (but apparently dresses are ok), and Dollmore are too big.

What would the resin color/quality be as described by Volk's skintones? Normal? Sunlight? Perhaps BW? Would it be considered old quality or pureskin?

--> Again, I don't have Volks products to compare. I would say that the resin is a healthy, natural looking, color. I saw a Soulkid and it looked very pale compared to my Yuki.

And last but certainly not least, is the poseability considered 'adequate'?

--> More than adequate, from experience and according to BF owners that compared them to other dolls. There are many TF threads where you can see TFs pose in the forums if you look around. :)

I sincerely hope none of you familiars to this forum are annoyed at such newbie-ish questions, and I tremble at the thought that you might be (heavens forbid) ANNOYED by me ???

--> *Lol* Not at all! I was a newbie myself about a month ago, and since then I've taken my Yuki's head off, took out her eyes, touched up her makeup, put her eyelashes and brought her back together in one piece! ;) You can check her 2 threads if you click on my avatar picture and then on the "find threads started by Fereshteh" link.

Glad if I could help you a little! Don't hesitate if you have more questions. Bluefairies are exquisite dolls. Their default faceups are very delicate, and look just like the ones on the website.....

      =^o^=

    8. No, no, yes, not sure, rosier than normal, adequate.

I really think you've got too much that you're worrying about - it's harder to find a 'bad' doll than a super good one. I've recently bought a Tiny Fairy, and out of several dolls that I own, I gotta say I'm very smitten with him. His skin is a lively, bright tone, his posing is sometimes fidgety but he can curl like none of my others can, and the sculpting - not just the face, but the body, hands, feet, everything - is superb.

Perhaps spend a little bit more time just 'lurking' - look at photos to get an idea of posability, check for negative feedback for the company, try and find pictures of Blue Fairy dolls next to Volks dolls if that's what you want to compare resins with.

Best of luck in getting your doll - I've owned a little range of companies' dolls, and while I'm not the most prolific member out there, I'd like to think I've got a good idea of what's good and not. I think a blue fairy is a really good choice for a starter! If you wanna chat, just send me a private message. :3

    9. If you are getting a girl, which body are you thinking of getting - the slight extra cost "blossom body" is a mature body and the default body is (I think) an immature body. It may make some difference in what whey can wear.

Here is an owner with lots of Tiny Fairies - cute photos!
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115724

As for their relative lack of popularity, maybe it is because they have young looking faces, and the older version had a darker normal skin tone compared to many other BJD's (I could have that mixed up). But they are very cute.

But you probably also missed a lot of them searching if you are not used to searching on this board. DoA search can only search for 3 letter words if you put and asterisk on the end like may* - and even then, that is a bad search because of the common word "may". Also, people list tiny fairies as tiny fairy, blue fairy, bluefairy, TF, BF, BFTF, plus all of those fairy ones are plurals (i.e. fairies). So they are not easy dolls to search for!

Here is a nice database of people's Blue Fairy dolls (both sizes):
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27072

And re joints snapping - BJD dolls are a bunch of separate pieces strung with elastic. It is very unusual for mini parts to break unless force is used on thinner pieces like fingers or eyeholes, or the doll suffers a drop to a hard surface (or your dog gnaws on it, etc). If a mini falls apart is is more likely the elastic stringing is the problem (easily fixable). That said, they are not a good doll to let a toddler or young child play with unless the child knows how all joints are supposed to bend, not to play tug-of-war with it, etc.! My toddler niece picked up her gramdmother's fairly sturdy eyeglasses and in 10 seconds managed to totally break the frame by forcing the one side piece to bend the wrong way.

    10. Wow, you're kind of... pedantic.

I think by joint snapping you mean if the posing is jerky...? From what I've heard of Bluefairies and Angelregion (same sculptor, same body), they pose extremely well due to the ball-joint being egg-shaped instead of a ball. So the joints shouldn't snap, no.

By the compared to models thing... if you mean if they're similar looking to other dolls so that they'll look good together-- I, personally, don't think the TinyFairies look that fantastic next to Delves and MiniFees. The reason why is because they're stylized in a way that emphasizes facial features-- and their signature, tiny yet pointy noses. But the TinyFairies have a very mild sculpt where the facial features are reduced and simplified greatly. So they contrast rather harshly with them. Other than that, I think they should look great with other dolls-- maybe not always when compared to Volks, though.

MOST MSDs are more or less compatible with a little sanding involved. For sure they're compatible with AngelRegion since they use the same body. It's the resin color that would be the problem. BlueFairy has really, really, really dark resin compared to most other doll companies. It's peachy and appears very pink next to most dolls. The resin-- so far-- hasn't matched anything other than Luts' on rare chances due to Luts' crazy resin inconsistencies. Since it's so much darker than other companies' resins, somethings they looked flushed or feverish next to the other lighter dolls. Or it'll make the more normal colored resin dolls look sickly and pale due to how pink the Tinyfairies are. I've heard that Tinyfairies also feel lighter than most dolls, and that their plastic tends to be alittle shinier. I don't know if this is common in recent batches, though. BlueFairy has apparently been tweaking their resin batches as of the recent year or two.

Don't be nervous. Better to ask then never know, yeah? But definitely read as much as you can-- even about dolls that you're not going to get. People tend to speak very generally here, so you have to have a general knowledge to follow along.

    11. Try some of those searches - a bluefairy (one word) title search from Advanced search pulled up several I hadn't seen before.

And BTW if you decide to buy, some people say Minoruworld (partner of Bluefairy) ships faster, but Bluefairy is just a bit slower.

    12. I meant snapping like so- when I am posing the doll, let's say, but then suddenly the elastic gives in and the arm goes to awkward default position- scaring me and surrounding individuals! … I've read too many horror stories here to not give this a second thought! Thanks a ton for the advice... ^^
Nanlady- What a rush of relief! If you don’t mind talking to a clueless newbie and answering endless questions, i might just hurl you senselessly.. i'm afraid you've just created a monster!~~
Adressing the resin color, I think I should brush up on my research.... and Chienism- I hope I don't come across to you as pedantic! I just fear failure... OO

    13. It's totally fine when that happens. It's not like it's a violent contorted manuever or anything. The elastic loosens up over time, so even if a doll initially does that it'll be gone eventually. The few stories I've heard about it being bad are due to Luts' sculpt for knee joints-- not terribly effective in holding poses. It's called "Luts kicky leg." One of my friends got kicked in the eye by her Mini Fee. But that's... seriously the worse I've heard.

A little pedantic, but that's just because your written speech is a little overly colorful (it reminds me of my own overzealous self back in late elementary school-- prowling the internets!). XD You're in Cerritos? That's not too far from where I live. I used to go there a lot. :) There's quite a few doll-meets that center around the Los Angeles area. You should definitely go to one.

If you have any questions at all, I think most people here are all fine with considering them.

    14. I think I know what you mean. Many BJD's have "kicky legs" as we call them (the tendency for the elastic to suddenly bend the knee of a straight leg). This is the nature of dolls with ball joints strung with high-tension elastic! It has to be tight enough to hold the joint firmly together, but what it really wants to do is bend that joint and relieve some of the stretch on itself! Good sculpts balance the body weight well and design the knee joints to resist kickiness.

Some doll's arms are also kicky. And many BJD's also only want to pose with their knees and elbows at 90 degrees or straight.

But some dolls pose better than others and sometimes have sort-of ridges or extensions in the joint area to provide more resistance at difficult positions (example Unoa 1.5).

For dolls that have the kicky or 90 degree problem, I live with it, some try restringing, some people "suede" the inside of the joints, some add more friction to the ball joint in other ways, and for tinies many people wire the joints by slipping wire in with the elastic near the joints.

Each doll has its own posing idiosyncrosies (sp?). Some don't sit up straight well, etc.

You need to ask owners of the same line of dolls with the same body version and type you are planning to buy. Maybe PM the person whose link I had above (the one with LOTS of Bluefairy kids).

You can also search for: bluefairy (and each of its variations) with the word posing and again with the word posability (if you have much patience!). If you are planning to get the blossom body then you can just search for blossom posing and blossom posability (you will see it with many other heads on but a posing review should be valid).

Re resin - I had the versions backwards. Apparently the current resin is the darker pinker one as someone else said above.

Here is a comparison (new seems to be on left)
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116156

      Old vs new here also:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104839

And scroll down here for pictures of possibly new Bluefairy resin (don't know) against some other dolls' skin tones:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128086

That newer resin is a rather unusual color compared to other normal skin BJD's. It seems that while some companies were becoming lighter, Bluefairy went darker. And many pictures on DoA may not be identified as being old resin because at the time, people didn't know there would be a new resin.

      Carolyn

    15. OO. Oh dear. "Overly colorful". I suppose you regard me as 'overzealous' now, chienism? 'Though I simply can't understand why my friends say that I 'talk like a book'...

    16. Lol - "Overly colorful" - I thought you were talking about the version 2 resin.

      Carolyn

    17. *Feels ignored* :(

    18. I got a BlueFairy Emilie as my first doll (I've had her for a year and a half) and I'm very happy with her. My only other doll is a Volks SD13 boy. His resin looks yellow compared to hers; she doesn't look feverish, he looks jaundiced. I don't take pictures of them together so it hasn't bothered me at all. I really like the way her resin looks, it's healthy and natural. The resin is good, it's smooth but not plasticy, and the seams aren't that noticable.

BF eye putty is absolutely disgusting, it smells and is really sticky. If you plan to change the eyes you should probably get some different putty to replace it.

My Emilie was strung very loosely when I got her. She stands and sits really well but her arms were absolutely useless. I tightened her stringing and recently hot-glue sueded her and she poses well for her type of jointing, though obviously she can't do the awesome poses that other super flexible bodies can.

Um, if you're concerned about clothing fitting, I haven't had a problem with anything I've bought, even Volks MSD stuff. I haven't bought that many things from companies though since I make most of her clothes.

Oh, and BF faceups are gorgeous, I'd recommend getting one. They're finely detailed, especially compared to my Volks default faceup.
