1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

    1. I love box openings. It's a nice chance to see a wide variety of dolls and candid owner pics which can give a better idea of what a doll is like in person than the company photo shoots.

      I sort of like the videos but I too find them long. And I have to say I do get tired of people's cats.

    2. I don't know about awesome versus boring, since that's just a matter of how any individual photographs and presents them, but either way I find them useful - you get to see how a company packs their dolls, or what a particular doll looks like blank or in its default state.

    3. I like them and l plan on one day doing one for my next obitsu that l want to get.

    4. I love box openings! I always take the time to take a peek when someone posts a link. I love seeing the excitement of the owner and how the doll looks from the company. I don't like videos because they are usually too long, and the loud crinkling of bubble wrap is annoying and its hard to see the doll on most home cameras.

    5. I like box opening videos! Maybe I'm just nosy about what a member looks or sounds like. ;)

      Anyway, it's a chance to share in someone else's excitement, which is great if you're ever waiting on a doll yourself. Still, like anything else, box openings are not for everyone.

    6. yeah, more than 2 videos here would kill my internet to below dialup. I'm happy 99% of the time all the pictures in a thread open for me without being a red X!

    7. I usually forget box openings exist. ^^; I love seeing how much joy people get from the simple fact of opening a box. They generally cheer me up if I'm in a bad mood. For me, it's less the idea of seeing a new doll than it is knowing how much joy the new owner is getting from it.

    8. I personally find them quite boring as a general rule, but I'm glad people do them because that's usually the best way to catch the first owner pics of a highly sought after doll or a new release. It's also often a way to see sculpts blank.

      If people want to do and post them, more power to them. :) I just won't be super likely to look at them unless I have a specific goal in mind.

    9. I'm also of the camp that likes the photo box openings but avoid video ones. I'm impatient and like to skip around to the pictures that interest me. :)
      Like others have said, it's really great for considering something I might be on the fence about or a company I hadn't tried before. B/c the stock photos can be something of a hit-and-miss, I really enjoy pre-modified owner photos that really shows the dolls as they are in 'natural habitats'. It's also nice to see the actual boxes/blankets/ect. since they're almost never in stock photos.

    10. I find them pretty boring and only ever even go into that sub-forum if I am really desperate to try and find owner pics of a particular sculpt and they are to be had nowhere else on the forum.

      I dunno. I've bought and sold a lot of dolls over the years. When I open them, all I care about is checking for damage and looking the doll over to see if it's what I wanted. I don't really feel any special excitement for them until they're complete to me, which means accessories, clothes, faceup and any other modifications are done. I've ever done one box opening and that is because I managed to get 3 dolls delivered on Christmas Eve last year and was told I couldn't pass up that chance.

    11. I don't find them very interesting unless I am interested in the doll specifically. Sometimes the photos taken in box opening threads give me a better idea of the way the doll REALLy looks because they are not as posed (or faceuped or dressed...) I enjoy the ones in which the opener writes about the physical doll and its pros and cons rather than the cute ones in which the dolls greet eachother or get into fights.
      The nice thing about the box opening threads is that they have their own special place on the forum. If you like them, you can look at them all you want. If they are boring to you, you don't have to go to that part of the forum. :lol:

    12. I'm also in the crowd that is interested in the box opening, usually only if it's a doll that I am interested in. Photography that is clear and good quality usually spark my interest too. It's always a bonus when there's a cute story behind it as well. :)

    13. I have to be honest... I very rarely look at the box openings in the gallery here, and avoid video openings like the plague. (I avoid most "home videos" like the plague, so it's not just a doll thing. XD) I'm just not that interested in watching someone else unpack their new toys.

      That said, I did do a photostory opening for Harumatsu... Mostly because he was my first, and at the time it seemed to be "expected" in a way it isn't so much now. The photos were dire, the story wasn't very interesting, and I've never done another one.

    14. The "story" openings I've seen I thought were kind of boring. They all went pretty much like this:

      Doll 1: "Oh? a new friend for me?"
      Owner: "yes it is! Let's open it up! :D"
      *several photos of unpacking*
      Doll 1: "Oh noes! A monster! D:"
      Owner: "Not monster; friend! :3"
      *Nekkid, bald doll covering modesty*
      Doll 2: "Clothes, plz!"
      *new doll and old doll posing together*
      *cat in box*

      However, I will look at box opening threads to see;
      - blank version of a sculpt I'm interested in
      - how a company sends their dolls out
      - if there was damage; how did the damage happen and how could it be avoided if I ordered from this company in the future?

    15. Wow... I didn't expect such a response... :) Thanks, guys! I think I agree with what a few people have said. Waiting for my own doll probably has a lot to do with how much I love the box openings. It's like watching and imagining what I will get to experience when my boy is finally sent. ^^ I haven't looked at any box openings for him, or even his company, though. I want to be surprised when he arrives.

      You have to love how that ends up happening on Youtube. Start out on a BJD related video, end up on nyan cat or something. "Related videos" is a lie!!!

      I agree completely!

      I think I probably don't mind the box openings because I "watch" them while I'm multi-tasking... I have them going on my iPod at work and only glance down at them once in a while. XD Like when I want to see what the company's box looks like, or if they are showing the clothes or doll itself. ^^

      I don't think I'd sit around home and watch them. In fact, I haven't watched any at home at all. Hmm.

      Yeah. Some box openings aren't too bad. Some people do it the smart way and edit out that 10 minutes they couldn't remember how to use scissors. XD Or show the outer box and skip to the inner box! That's so great and saves time lol.

      LOL Cat in box. It's so true. It happens in video box openings as well. There's a cat, getting in the way, delaying the view of the doll.

      I agree that a lot of the photostories are overdone... but I've seen a few that are cute. Maybe it's just that I haven't been in the hobby long enough to be tired of them. ^^ I think there's a lot that could be done if one was really dedicated to making it a well thought out photostory... but as for me, I get the feeling when my boy arrives, I'll be so intent on getting him out that I won't want to stop to take many photos.... >_>;;

      Your reasons for looking at box openings are good ones. ^^ I've done the same with a few dolls I have considered getting in the future.

    16. I check the box opening thread daily! I really like seeing how different companies ship their dolls and how dolls actually look w/o the Photoshopping a company may do. Though I do not like the ones where people just show off their doll with one or two pictures of their doll fully dressed and without showing any of the process of actually opening a box. If I wanted to stare at dolls like that I would just go to the gallery threads!

    17. My primary gallery views are in the box openings. Sometimes I'll even watch the video but mostly it's for sharing the joy of opening a new doll. I get so caught up in remembering how I felt when I opened up my own dolls when they arrived.

      TO me, it's more enjoyable then the actual gallery, since I almost never go there anymore.

      Oh! does anyone remember how the whole "Cat-in-Box" thing started?

    18. I like Box Openings. I usually post all of mine, just in case someone might be interested.

      I check Box Openings for dolls I'm interested in and dolls I'm waiting for... They are great for knowing what to expect when my doll finally arrives. I also like to check them for the packaging and for what usually comes with the dolls.

      It's fun to see the excitement of someone opening a box. These are important arrivals and it's cool to see how people react to them... and to congratulate them on their new dolls! :D

    19. I love them : ) No matter how they done unless the owner whines about every little thing XD ;;;
      I check most of them, even dolls i don't know.

    20. I don't usually bother with box-openings unless it's somebody I know, or a sculpt I've been waiting to see, or a sculpt I happen to love. It's just that there are so MANY of them, one can't see 'em all!

      I have nothing against them in general. But I'm not terribly interested in looking at people's cats sitting in the box, or their other dolls greeting the new doll with bits of backstory that mean nothing to me.

      However, I do love a really good detailed tour through a fullset... I like closeups of the doll's more interesting or newfangled features (especially if it's a new body type!), the faceup, the packaging, the fullset gear & accessories, etc. And I like to hear how excited the owner is to have their new beauty home.

      If you don't like box openings per se, it's easy to simply avoid the Box Openings gallery.
