1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Breaking Up An Artist Fullset

Apr 3, 2021

    1. If nothing else, having the fullset might make selling easier if it ever comes to that. I have a full-set Mannikin from Dollzone, the doll is discontinued and I figured (when I bought her at the last minute) that I might as well go all out since I had the means, even if I wouldn't keep her in her full set, because it gave me more options. And of couse you can always mix and match. There are pieces of the full set that she stilll wears because they work nicely with other stuff I bought for different reasons (and even different dolls).
It's a creative hobby, anything goes as far as I'm concerned.

    2. I don't know all the details here about the doll, if it is something you are buying direct from the artist you can ask to just get the doll and not the fullset, they could maybe put the items you don't want on a different doll. I know some artists won't do that, but reading what one person said about some artists not selling to you again, you may want to enquire.
I do agree with what pretty much everyone is saying though, once you buy it it is yours. If you feel ok breaking it up, do it. If you really just don't feel right about it, then don't. Are you planning to keep the doll forever, if so, I would say do it, if not...then maybe put the rest of the set away?
Sorry I feel like I have more questions than I should, so much depends on specific things.

    3. My very first doll was a limited to 11 pieces fullset purchased in 2006. About a year or so after getting him, I sold his outfit, wig and shoes since my doll was never going to wear them. (I did keep his special box though) A year after that I got him repainted.

It's been more than a dozen years since then, and I have never needed that outfit and I'm still happy with his new faceup. I doubt the artist knows about me or my doll and I highly doubt the changes to my doll keeps her up at night. So why should I worry about it?

@mimimontoya I'd love some receipts on this artists not selling to people whose changes they don't like.

I know HyperManiac used to not sell to customers if they found they'd sold one of their dolls on the secondhand market, but they changed their stance many years ago.

    4. I edited my post for clarity and to hopefully correct any vague hearsay. HyperManiac did do that back then, I was not aware they ever changed that stance. If I am not mistaken, Volks does the same today with a warning on reselling their Bisque dolls, that the re-seller and new buyer may both be ineligible to make future shop purchases. Please correct me if I’m wrong, my Japanese google translation of the terms and conditions of those dolls may be in error but I believe that’s what it says.

    5. @mimimontoya Yeah, Hyper changed their stance maybe a decade ago?? One of my "grails" was a sold out Hyper, so I am glad someone did sell him to me second hand and that she changed her stance. Then again, even though Hyper updated their website several years ago, they've only done a couple rereleases since. Since she isn't very active, how would she ever track doll ownership this many years on?

That is also true about the Volks Bisque dolls. I think they request you give them back rather than selling them on? That doesn't seem to have stopped people from selling them though. Since you have to enter for them in person at Sato and sign paperwork saying you won't sell them, they certainly do know who the owners are and will know if they've been sold on. I have to assume those owners have left the hobby altogether at the point they sell Bisques, so are not worried about consequences with Volks.

    6. Hmm... I wonder if those terms of purchase prohibit trades or gifting the doll to someone else (I know a really expensi ve doll is unlikley to be given away, but it could happened - and how would Volks know if the recipient of the gift then funded the purchase of other dolls for the gifter - to the value of the gift...?).

    7. Not trying to send the thread off on a derail but that's a really good question, now I am wondering too - mostly because that would be such a wonderful gift, they are such beautiful dollies! AFAIK, it would take more skill than I have to sand the china paint off a bisque doll and repaint and re-fire her, so aside from re-dressing or changing wig/eyes, the customizing topic on those particular dolls is a moot point in my sphere for any porcelain bisque dolls. (I know that there are some amazing doll restorationists who could certainly do that though if someone wanted to send them out for possible changes?)

In topic, @~Suisei_Seki~ I'd love to know what you think/decide, and I hope what I posted contributed to rather than detracted from your decision process, I was not trying to be in any way discouraging for you to buy and do with said doll as you wish, only relating what I think to be some other factors that I would consider if buying a doll from a doll artist that might NOT be happy with me re-doing a full set. I would absolutely look to the future (if any) of buying another of their dolls and consider factors that might impact my ability to do so.
It's a good discussion topic all around, at least for me, because I can see so many things in play with it.

    8. Thank you all for weighing in! I ultimately went with a different doll for unrelated reasons, but I still think it’s a really interesting topic of discussion.

I also think the artists and companies who think they can keep people from selling secondhand are delusional. Especially now, when you’d have to monitor a thousand IG tags, forums, and FB groups to even know.

    9. Yep.....

    10. The doll is yours once you buy it. That means you can do anything you want as long as it's legal. So, don't worry about it. It is usual that many people do, also many artists like to see different "looks" of their work.
