1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Budgeting for dolls: How much do you spend a year?

Jan 30, 2011

    1. I promised myself that I wouldn't use anything outside of my "doll fund", which is made up of gifted money, spare change, Swagbucks/app money, and miscellaneous things I didn't work for like tax refund money and things. Granted, maybe it'll be harder to resist temptation once my doll gets here and I can experience having a BJD for the first time, but right now, I don't even allow myself to buy cheap things on eBay if it's not with my doll money! I let myself buy little things from time to time if it's in a physical store and I know I could use it on my dolls, but that's probably because I figure the real threat to my resistance is online shopping. The only physical store "threat" right now is that Our Generation MSD sized bike, which I might just get on Black Friday or Boxing Day with non-doll fund money (if I can find it locally that is). lol

I'm also currently looking into the world of selling little doll accessories I've made. :)

    2. I don't budget for dolls and doll things really but that's because I don't work (I do odd jobs every now and then but nothing consistent) so I have to save up for a long time. Obviously if I don't have the money then I can't buy a doll so I don't buy any dolls and that's really all there is to it. Like @Yami_Hanako, I also think about every purchase (doll-related or otherwise) for a long time before finally deciding whether or not to buy the item(s). I have no problem dropping a large sum of money all at once every now and then (ie. more than a year in between those large purchases) once I have thought about it for a while and decided that I really do want it and it really is worth it; actually I prefer it that way than spending small amounts regularly as that adds up quickly.
Since getting Nadeko, I have spent around $100-200 per year on doll clothing and/or accessories for her and that comes out of my savings so it's never more than that and sometimes (like last year) I don't buy anything at all.

    3. I don't have a yearly doll budget per se; I go in streaks with how much I spend on dolls. I bought my first doll almost five years ago, and over the course of those five years I've accumulated about 15 dolls. That's about 3 dolls per year, and as of recently I'm done collecting unless a limited comes available that I really want.

    4. Last year, I spent nothing on dolls. Not a penny. This year... I m not even gonna count. 7 dolls (and a head) + clothes for all of them and for some of my old dolls, wigs, boots, etc.
So it's really depends, if I am in the "dolls mood", or not.

    5. I don't budget for dolls, exactly, but I do budget for leisure expenses, which is where my doll funds usually come from.

And after spending only about $20 on my BJD's between 2010 and ~September 2015, I'm apparently making up for lost time with a second hand Limhwa ToYou, and a Dollshe mini!Grant Phillippe on the way, not to mention the various wig/clothing items for them. But I've also been selling some of my old dolls/doll things from when I first joined the hobby in 2007, so it's kind of balancing out, at the moment.
