Buyer‘s regret

She's a Dark Tan, I see a lot less seeking for darker dolls. But maybe I'll take a gander at those WTBs just in case

Most recently, I bought two dolls from the same company and shortly after ordering, I realized they were the wrong color. (Basically, the company offered more colors than the dealer did, and the dealer didn't have resin sample colors shown, so I thought I ordered a much darker color than I actually did.) I contacted the dealer, but it was too late to change the color, and that completely ruined my plans for the dolls. I had no idea what to do with them, had no excitement about getting them home, just dread and regret. I tried to make one work and listed the other. I failed to bond and ended up listing them both. I did end up selling one, the other sat on the market for months with no interest, so two days ago, I took him down and decided to play around with faceups on him to see if anything sticks. My first faceup did not interest me at all and I wiped him almost immediately. Second faceup is better and might work for a side character of mine. I'm still deciding.

 

I think that when Susu arrives you will know far better if those feelings are just anxiety or a real regret for the doll!!! I hope and wish everything will turn fine no matter what you will decide to do with the doll!!!
I had similar feelings with my apple souldoll her face mold and face up were magnifiscent in the website but after I had seen many arrival photos I was wary of my choise , it was the first doll I ordered but the second that arrived so I consider her my second doll (first arrived was Aletheia notdoll a pure perfection) I still have her but still it is not one of my faves so what I did I changed the face up this worked a bit but not much , then tried to use the body for patterns and such but at the end nothing works so I will sell her but my first thought it would be to change the face up , a face up transforms the doll also fashions as well. You shouldn't feel bad it's hard to find a perfect doll for a pre-existing idea even more a full fleshed character wish you every luck with that!!!!!

Since she's intended to represent a specific character, I'm concerned I'm gonna open the box and be like "This doesn't look like my character at all" though I'm sure she would still be gorgeous.

I ordered her literally a day after she became available, since I figured she would be the closest I'll be able to get to my OC.
But the more I see if other people's Susus, the more I'm begging to doubt that.

But judging by tracking, she should be here very soon!
I suspect Tuesday or Wednesday. She's in town now, just needs to be processed and delivered (it's the long weekend though)
So I should find out very soon!

I'm regretting the first two, of the first three dolls that I ordered. The female one, I should have asked about her resin color before buying her (usage of words in description). Also the colors used for her face-up are bad. It might be all in my head, with her.
With the male, it's beginner's bad luck. I liked one of the SD sculpts, but was afraid of the price (joke's on me, deposit on one SD doll, way later). Bought a MSD fullset from same company, outside of the pre-order window for pre-order discount. I was afraid they would run out of the fullset (because I read about how fullsets all have time windows, how long you can buy them). I believe they STILL offer the fullset now. I also thought that I wouldn't be able to get a legit SD sculpt 2nd hand (I thought doll owners were conservative selling.) Now, I feel that all of the maker's dolls have the exact same face, so I'm no longer interested in collecting dolls from that brand, anymore.
I'm lucky that I haven't regretted the third one yet, because she'd never sale. I wonder if she was casted, then abandoned.

I have doll regrets, some of which have resulted in instant reselling of the dolls when they have arrived. Some times they didn’t match my expectations, and other times they didn’t pose as well as I hoped or didn’t fit the character I had in mind for them.

My best advise to you however, is to look at owner pictures of dolls - there are plenty of them on instagram, Facebook as well as here on DoA. I also purchased a Susu during her initial release and was dead set on selling the head to replace it with another once she arrived, but by looking at pictures owners had taken of their customized dolls, it helped me see a lot more of her potential. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I often find it difficult to fully see the potential of a doll when you just have the company’s pictures to consider, because there’s no guarantee you want a similar doll like that (like in Susu’s case, I don’t want a baby-faced pouty ‘Baby Girl’ like she appears in her promo pictures). I am opting for a more edgy, semi-goth vibe for mine with straight black bangs, heavy eye makeup and a surly look about her - a decision I never would have arrived at without looking at how other people had customized their dolls ❤️ I am now glad to keep my Susu

If nothing else, I would recommend looking for a different head for her, depending on your resin color. The Plump body poses beautifully - it is by far one of the best posing bodies I have encountered, and I have an undying love of Bimong, Souldoll and Fairyland dolls. SartoriaJ and Iplehouse FID clothes fit them perfectly, and Raccoondoll might too but I haven’t tried, so you have a fair bit of choice when it comes to finding clothes if you don’t sew them yourself.

 

I struggle with this too, I buy a doll thinking it'll be the love of my life but by the time it's finally here after so many months I don't really vibe with it anymore after all... But I find making it into another character than what I had in mind originally makes it feel like a new different doll that maybe i'll like more

 

I feel like my old-fart déjà vu is kicking in again, but maybe I did post on a similar thread before. When you've been on a forum for as long as I have, everything starts to become the same exact topic of discussion, over and over... Or maybe it's just dementia...

I regretted a doll I purchased based on me wanting to steal the doll's body for my favorite doll at the time. The proportions, aesthetics and colors were all so wrong, but I thought because my first doll was a hybrid, I could do hybridizing willy-nilly. Or just somehow magically make it work. In the end, the hybrid didn't work but the doll became my favorite BJD for a long time. I never sold a complete doll before nor after, and I'll probably never will do so again. What might work for one person, doesn't necessarily mean it will work for all. It's all mostly based on very personal experiences and preferences. I (heavily modified his face) customized that doll so much, that his face probably doesn't look like the OG sculpt anymore, but that's why I probably love him so much. Ah ha ha ha ha. I'm laughing because me, three. Nothing like paying for a company face-up, getting the doll, realizing you don't like the face-up, and wiping it, watching yourself waste money in real time. I have definitely done this.

The way I'm avoiding doing this again is that I made a new rule for myself that I will not buy any company face-ups now. I'm doing this to force myself to practice doing face-ups, because I want to get better at them.
Also - wasting money in real time by wiping them... But no. Really. It's cuz I want to practice. Yup.

 

Oh, she was an in stock doll at a dealer (I bought without asking for photos). I'm planning to keep the company face-up for at least a season, and see if I like it and the doll. Anyway, there'll be no time to redo her face up. I'm attempting a few face ups in the fall. There's at least one that I'm not sure if I should commission it's face up, instead of doing it myself.

As far as the SD thing, I came into bjd when companies were either pushing their 75cm sculpts or moving onto 70cm+ bodies. And, like most people, liked the faces of the stronger uncles more than the standard ones. TIme will tell if I feel that the 70cm category is too big. Everyone keeps saying how heavy they are.

 

They are, indeed. If you want a lighter one, you might consider an off-topic body with an on-topic head? UF Doll makes a 70 and 75 cm male body in ABS/plastic that looks quite good in photos, but is much lighter.

 

Adding onto everyone talking about company faceups… My first SD was Telesthesia’s 62cm Xiao Bei head (but I got him on the 68cm body) and the faceup/promo photos were the main reason I picked him. He’s got this really cute gray/purple hair and just a soft aesthetic. When he came in the faceup was NOTHING like the promo photos and he had RED EYEBROWS. How they even do that is beyond me… Anyway I wiped it and re-painted him myself and am much happier with him now! But oh boy never again

 

Yes, that has happened to me. It was a new sculpt, so no owner pictures to compare the company pictures to. It was supposed to be the sister of a doll I already had, but when she got here, they didn't look right together and I just couldn't bond. I did try different wigs and eyes to see if that was the issue, but no joy. I was lucky and managed to sell her fairly quickly for what I paid for her, but I was out the cost of shipping. I don't sell my dolls often, so this was an unusual case!

 

Is the worry that you're finding you don't like the sculpt or is it the company face up that's putting you off? At least with the latter issue then a new face up can be done. But it can be difficult buying a doll without seeing it first as i've had a couple of occasions when a doll has arrived and instantly knew it wasn't going to work.

 

I regretted one purchase: a dream valley Nesha. She’s lovely! But she’s also HUGE and the detailing just.. didn’t look great to me on such a large doll. Really nice joint work though!

Now that there are more pictures of Susu coming out, I makes me realize I think I made the wrong sculpt choice.
She's going to be dark tan so the default faceup is probably going to look a lot different.
I do actually like all the dark tan faceups of theirs I've seen.
I even sent them one of their own photos, saying I love how they did it and asked if they could do mine like that and they said Yeah!

So while I'm excited to see this new doll, and I'm sure I'm going to think she's gorgeous, I suspect she won't look like the intended character.

 

Having it right now with my Angie. I haven't owned an NS doll in ages, because IMO tan and even fantasy colors just catch the light so much better and look richer in photos and in person. I waffled for almost the entire order period about whether I wanted to stick with tan or go with NS because I wanted her to be easier to fix since she was going to be my travel doll. In the end I picked NS and I am seriously regretting it.

She's also really pinheaded for a tiny her size. And her face-up looked more brown in company photos while it's a lot more stark and grey-black in person (though still lovely artistry). I think if I got her in tan or if she wasn't quite so pinheaded, I'd probably be okay, but together it's a real whammy (face-ups can always be fixed).
