Buying a Head when you just can't afford a whole doll

Oct 17, 2013

    1. Two of my 7 dolls started off as a floating head (one still is!). If you're concerned that the head won't be available when you can afford the full doll then it's definitely a good idea to get it whilst you can just incase. Just make sure you keep it in the box in the dark so that it doesn't yellow too much!

Side note: I strung my first floating head onto the body before properly unwrapping the doll, which was more exciting than just opening the body then attaching the head to it - that way I still got to unbox a complete doll. :)

    2. I do it all the time! Right now if you were to look at my signature, I actually have more floating heads than dolls, but my S.O. currently put a body on layaway for me for Yule! :)

I feel that its easier to get the head you want first, and then save/buy the body later. Especially since I have many MNM heads, I have quite a few floaters in The Headbasket. Many of them are going to end up with bodies that are more poseable than the bodies they might have originally come with, especially my 2005 (?) Luts Delf Dark Elf Soo. For me, poseability is more important than resin matching, so I have to get great posing bodies for my resinoyds.

I'll go read what the others said now, but I wanted to get my thoughts out beforehand.

    3. I did that with my Tifa and my Axel (well he was a free gift head and he still needs a body). I really don't think that's really uncommon. My best friend has two floating heads right now that are waiting for bodies and one other friend has a floating head that's waiting for a body.

    4. Ryuichi, my first boy was actually a floating body :o first, and a friend was kind enough to loan me a floating head for a few months.

Again, I don't really care as much about resin matching as I do for poseability, and the fact that I currently have six MNM heads, two LE heads and now a 2005 (?) head, I doubt if I'll find poseable bodies from the same companies as the heads. I'm in love with the Feeple 60 bodies, IMVHO, they have some of the best poseable and ascetically pleasing bodies out there, so that's what my WS DES is getting, despite the fact that she's beauty green.

Like it was mentioned before, its easier to have her head blushed to match than to look forever for a BG body that won't pose the way I need it to.

    5. Thanks Ryu, I agree with you 100%. I bought the head I wanted and now I'm anxiously waiting. I also want the best poseabitly but cant afford a good body. I decided to buy an inexpensive body for now, just so I can get her some clothes, but am also saving up for her the best poseable body in the future. I don't care so much about the matching either. She won't be wearing any sexy outfits that show a lot of skin. I'm doing research on the best poesable body as we speak, any suggestions?

    6. I'm considering buying a head now but when it came to my first doll, I couldn't have done it. I wanted to play with her the moment I put in the order and I think I would have lost steam if she was just a head. Now that I have a couple though, I'm not as worried about it. I have a couple of dolls so if I want to play with one, I've got one on hand. Maybe the head can even borrow one of their bodies XD

    7. For me it's either all or nothing. I know I'm on the extreme end of the BJD community...I think, but if I can't have the entire package, I personally have to leave it.

    8. That's happening right now! I bought a Felix head off here. Was going to buy him a body, but then Iplehouse released Rebecca and my life was basically over. XD

    9. Welp, like I said before, I'm partial to Fairyland's Feeple 60 bodies for poseability and aesthetics, but unless you are lucky, ;) you can only find them during an event. For MSDs, I love their Active line (A-line) bodies. I personally love the poseability of the Spiritdoll Proud v2 for a male 70cm, but the joints aren't as nice-looking as the CP joints. But I have to admit I'm not familiar with your floater. :sweat

But again, looking for poseability is one thing for a floating head, and looking for resin match is quite another. And don't forget, the clothes you buy for one body might not fit right on the body you're working to save for. In my opinion, its pointless to get "just any old body." Save and get what you really want.

    10. It's something I've done a couple times, it's a great way to save money and explore new companies, but I'll always prefer getting both pieces together at once. Like many others, I couldn't care less about resin matching, that's what paint and makeup's for! As far as waiting until you have enough money to get a body....I'm not for it. I did that once and it damn near drove me crazy, as it took me over a year to buy one. In the mean time I made a doll body out of tape and muslin and dressed it up like a marionette just to house the head.....floating heads creep me out big time. If you're not so crafty, short on cash and hard pressed for a body....two words: Mirodoll.

    11. I have done it once with my Eliya, because I wanted a minifee but couldn't find any I liked, and I just happened to see her sales thread and instantly wanted her. I would only recommend it with a recently made doll. It was a pain in the ass finding the body I wanted in resin old enough to match her. I wasn't interested in blushing the body, and changing the faceup is right out.

    12. I buy heads on impulse all the time, they become whole right after. I am not a great seller, meaning once they are here that is usually it. That said I still have about four floaters with no immediate plans. I think it's fine to just get the head at first, why not? Then you can get the feel for what type body you want.

    13. I've done this before, and I don't regret it. I bought my Chrom head (and his fantasy parts) without a body. I didn't get a body for them until the Soom FCE, and even now they have to share the body with a Sard head, a Bix head, and both their sets of fantasy parts.

I also prefer to buy just a head, or just parts, if they'll fit on a body I already have. I have one CW female body that's shared between 5 or six different heads (and even more sets of fantasy parts), and that's perfect for me. Saves so much space!

    14. I've never bought just a head while I was saving. I'd just just put her on Layaway, finding the right body can be hard. There's not really a lot you can do with a head too. I'd say wait and get the experience of having a whole doll arrive! :)

    15. My only doll so far started as a floating head. I didn't really have any other options financially - the entire doll was too much. I got the head at half price and spent about half of what I would if I had bought the same brand body. And honestly, my next one is almost certainly going to start out as a floating head too, but the one I plan on getting after that as the whole doll, since it's a more affordable brand. I would say if it's an expensive brand, it makes sense to buy just the head and hybrid with another brand body. But if it's a more affordable brand, then go ahead and save up for the whole doll.

    16. of my 5 doll's 2 of them are Hybrids. I first bought a head as a practice head but I fell in love with the head so I bought (a different brand) body. it actually became a hybrid when I knew I wanted a body for it and saw a good deal on a body wich was a good resin match. Im really happy with her now :D
I really dont mind having dolls with parts of different brands becouse I think its fun to customise my dolls, and with the choice of different brands I can really customise them. sometimes the resin match is waaaaay off but I always blush it so its not (that much) noticable.

    17. My darling couldn't afford a whole doll and ended up buying just a head. It turned out to work really well in her case since the head she got fit the character better than the full doll she had been looking at getting.

    18. I have done it with my elfdoll dami!!!! I couldnot afford her ...so I bought only the head.....I must decide on a body though and a body with a matching resin!! the problem is that I think to find the matching resin!!! so if anyone here have an elfdoll hybrid please show me!!!

    19. I do this all the time, my first BJD was just a head and couple months after I saved up enough to buy the body :) and then I bought another head because I had no money to buy the complete doll. I hope to bring it's body home soon <3 tha hard thing here is to wait haha :sweat

    20. I've done it once, and honestly, I think I will do it again - but only if I was going to hybrid the doll in the first place.

I bought a Soom head with the intention of getting a body later, but when I got him an NS body it was just a total resin mis-match - of the worst variety. To the human eye it seemed like almost a perfect match, but on camera, because of the different opacities and reflective properties of the resin from the different batches, they looked two entirely different colours. As I like to take photos of my dolls, that was very, very frustrating.

But if the plan was to buy a different body anyways, then it doesn't really matter if you wait or not, you really have an equal chance of something like that happening regardless of how long you wait. Heads aren't quite as fun as full dolls, but you can still put wig and head accessories on them, buy them eyes, and paint their faces. That's half of the dolly-owning fun right there!
