Buying a Head when you just can't afford a whole doll

Oct 17, 2013

    1. Oh I very rarely buy a head and a body at the same time. I usually buy the head first to see if I like it in person. If I don't I sell it off but if I do I go body hunting. I really like hybrid dolls so that has something to do with it too.

    2. Wanted to add that the head I purchased was limited for an event and has since been retired. STILL HAVING REGRETS THOUGH!

    3. I happen to do that, sometimes to get it cheapper, sometimes just because I want to make an hybrid that will fit more the character I want for this doll. I don't have yet any non-hybrid doll, but I would like that to change though^^

    4. I just bought a head I never thought I'd see for sale never-mind own... I don't mind that she wont have a body. She will get on eventually and like most of us shopaholics here it gives me something else to look and save up for!

    5. I had a head that I had bought and had never shelled him, so I moved him along. Currently the only floating head I have was a junker with some terrible mods that I'm fixing up. The only reason I kept it was because it was so inexpensive to buy and was so modded I'd never be able to resell it.

I think I'm someone who would rather wait to have the extra money to buy a doll with both a head and a body because I have to be so careful about how I spend my money. (Though there are a few LE heads I really want right now, so that might go out the window. XD)

    6. Totally, because the head is the most important part. you just can't miss it.ಠ_ಠ

    7. Happens to me very often! Especially when the doll is limited/discontinued/only found on the marketplace. The head is the most crucial part of the doll (most of the time) so I'd much rather have the head and not have to worry about struggling to get it later when it could be harder to find.
Floating heads pile up fast though, and now I have to find them all bodies....

    8. Okay, I love this dicussion. As someone whos been in and out the hobby for a while with tastes changing all the time, I am a huge supporter of just buying heads to get the feel for a doll. in my opinion, the face is the only part of the doll that matters-- I rarely ever pay attention to a doll's body (I've always been bad or lazy at/with dressing my dolls; the only bodies I would absolutely need are the strange spindly artist ones like Doll Chateau or fantasy parts like hooves). Recently I've been on the lookout for just heads although having floating heads in the past it's hard for me to see them "float". I'm the kind of doll owner who will get a doll perfect then cement it on a shelf and with heads I've considered keeping them in shadowboxes for display... recently i cam across Doll Granado upper torso base, while, although only for SD, is such a great idea that i'm in love with and considering getting a few to display future heads that I don't particularly care if they go on a body or not. A torso base is also something that could be relatively easy to sculpt, because it has no joints. You can see them here!

    9. I can definitely see how people have like one doll body and then it's shared between several doll heads.
I find it perfectly ok and it sounds like what I would do (when I want to expand my collection)

    10. Yes, I bought two heads of my dream when the whole dolls were long sold out. I am totally happy with this heads:) One of them is still bodyless, another is now on Resinsoul body and the match is good. Body means not much for me, while the face is most important.

    11. That is my story - I wanted a dollshe 18M guy badly , but there were about to be canceled , so I quickly took Husky's head , and I still can't afford buying a proper body for poor thing .

    12. I also buy head when I do not have the opportunity to buy directly doll.

    13. Yes. Several times. Actually, most of them are just in the box because it's a hassle for me to find profer bodies for each of them. What a sad thing it is.

    14. Nice idea! I can't do that now since I want a full one for my first doll, he he. But I might do that for my next purchase, not anytime too soon tho T3T

    15. Sadly I have at least 4:1 floating heads to body - much easier on the wallet to buy a head, and sometimes I just don't feel the mfr's body works for the character I have in mind for the head... besides space would be an issue oy.

    16. [IMG]I did this, and as long as you get the resin to match its great, i went a bit bonkers and wound up with a dozen heads , and surprisingly many normal skin resins matched my dollfie dream bodys. Which i love more than resin bodys. strung bodys just suck to me and DD bodys just pose like a dream, and are feather light compared to resin, also I like the Dynamite bust with many of my ladies, the crazy big boobs are fitting to the style i like to make. Dollfie Dream mini works great on my luts Delf Ani and some others and again poses AMAZING , so in the end pairing heads with a body you like maybe for its structure or posabilty, , yeah a floating head instead of the whole package , yes it works for me.The pic i have here is my Luts Lishe with a DDY bod And no they didnt match exactbut i can cope ,

    17. Honestly it's up to you. When I bought my dolls, the first two were purchased within days of eachother. One was just a floating head, with no faceup or anything. The other was a fullset-limited doll.

I was running out of time and couldn't afford to buy both dolls completely, so I had to make my mind up. I purchased the floating head because his face sculpt was about to be discontinued, and I figured I'd have no problem getting his body later and being happy. I purchased the limited fullset because, for all I knew, it would be the only chance I'd ever have at that doll with his face, props, and outfit. Not to mention the perfect body.

So it's just priorities. If you can't afford a full doll, I'd recommend buying the head, unless you are absolutely in love with the body. Even if you love the body you can often buy it from the same company. Or, you might stumble upon an even better body while waiting for your head to come in. I found that the most fun I've had in this hobby was hybriding- it's twice the hunt, twice the excitement, and a doll that took twice the planning to complete!

Like some have mentioned before, buying the head is also a good idea because its easy to sell off and ship off if you decide it's not for you. You haven't dished out a full doll yet, you know?

    18. Actually, back in the early days of DoA, many people did just that with Obitsu bodies and DD bodies. That's why they're grandfathered here on DoA. :3nodding:

Good on for you for not caring much about resin matching, I'm glad I'm not the only one! :XD: I really don't care much about resin matching either, for me its the look and/or poseability that's important. I have a Beauty Green Luts/CP Delf Dark Elf Soo head that SHOULD go on a beauty green boy's body, but the chances of me finding one are rare indeed. So I'm more than likely just going to find him a white-skinned body and that'll be that.
