1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying a new doll: with or without company faceup?

Oct 6, 2012

?
  1. I buy most of my dolls with the company faceup.

  2. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to get a custom faceup done by an artist.

  3. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to do the faceup myself.

  4. It really depends on the doll.

    1. I used to prefer getting dolls in blank and doing their face-ups myself unless I was particularly attracted to the default. (The one time I did this didn't go to well, but things are rectified now.) Now I stick with defaults and the dolls I already have (and I have done face-ups for) are being sent out to get face-ups by other people as I can't really do them anymore. ^^; Luckily I haven't had any more problems with defaults.

    2. I am really stuck in between. Sometimes I really like a company face-up but I don't have enough funds to purchase it at the moment and will resort to getting the blank head first then worry about the face up later (I have quite a number of floating heads...). On the other hand, sometimes I find an artist who I really like and would ship a lot of heads to that person (multiple times). It really depends on my wallet and preference..

    3. It depends on what I want for the character. I was really intimidated by the idea of doing faceups for many years, so I tended to get dolls with their defaults and keep them, or get them repainted by a talented artist. I'd sometimes even get the default if I was planning on sending them off just so they didn't sit around blank while I waited for my slot to come up. I did finally sit down and start painting faces this year, so now I have a mix of defaults I liked enough to keep, artist faceups I commissioned in years past, and my own work.

    4. It really depends on the default face-up. I like to do my own face-ups, but there are some company face-ups which are simply stunning so it's a case by case basis for me :)

    5. I like doing my own faceups-- mostly because I have a character in mind that doesn't fit the company faceup and I'm to impatient to send my doll to someone else for a custom faceup.

    6. A lot of companies now offer custom faceups. Which is my preferred faceup method. When I got into the hobby, I used to paint my own faceups, but as you can see, from the doll in my profile picture, I really suck at faceups lol. I have 2 event heads at home that need a faceup. I bought materials to do it myself, but I'm seriously considering sending them out for commission. I worry though, about theft or other things (doll breaking, damage). So I might just paint them both myself. I have a few dolls (limited editions) with the default faceup because I felt this would increase their collector value, and also because, I just loved the faceups. But most of the time, I will send the company a photo and request they make it look similar to that. Dollmore does an awesome job with their custom faceups, Crobidoll is another one that offers custom work. :) For commissioned work, I love Angel Toast and Nomyens. I'd love to own a doll with one of their faceups some day :)

    7. It's very difficult choice for me... Usually I love company's face up and want doll with it, but there some cases when it doesn't fit my character I want doll to be...

    8. I always buy blank. I do my own face ups.

    9. I love painting dolls myself. I love it so much I even started a faceup shop so I could have the chance to paint dolls I'd never own. It's not that I'm amazing at it or anything, and it took ages to get to where I am now in skill, but it's just so much fun bringing a doll to life that way.
There's something so special about painting a BJD that's going to be in my collection, though. I can't quite describe it... but the customization process attracts me to the hobby more than the dolls themselves at times.
If I buy a doll with a company faceup, it's hard for me to wipe it and paint it with my own. I don't know why! I have a few limiteds who I'd love to repaint, but I can't bring myself to wipe their faces clean. :< It's much easier for me to just buy a doll blank, then I don't feel bad, hah!

    10. If I'm buying a doll brand new from the company, I always get them blank, and have a friend do a custom face up. But sometimes there's no choose - as in pre-owned dolls who are already painted, or certain companies like Jpopdolls where the dolls don't come blank. But in both those case the dolls usually end up being wiped and redone.

    11. It really depends on the default. If I like he default I'll get it, just so I can play with them right away. I've only done one faceup myself so far and let's just say that it's a good thing the doll is question is so beautiful that nothing could make her look bad. I really need to try this again now that the weather's getting better.

    12. One of my favorite parts of the hobby is painting a doll's face for the first time, watching their personality come out. For that reason, I order my dolls blank. Not to mention it shaves a bit off the purchase price! ^^

    13. All the heads I have are blank, so I can practice painting them.
As much as I like doing it myself I still haven't improved enough to the point that I'm satisfied with the results. I probably won't give up doing it myself, but I am definitely considering getting a company face up if I find one that I really like just to save myself some work.

    14. It would depend on the company face-up. Some are great for the characters I want! Others...eh, pretty but won't work. I bought my doll second hand with an artist face-up and I love it, so it's all up to the person buying the doll :)

    15. For me it depends on the doll. My first bjd I skipped the factory face up because I knew someone who had the same sculpt and seeing him in person without the face up he looked perfect to me. Granted I've only had him a couple days, but I don't see me getting him a face up at all. There is another doll I have my eye on and I would definitely get the factory face up for him as I don't think he'd look right without it.

    16. Depends on the doll and what the default face-up looks like.
I prefer getting the default face-up though as I'm really too scared to try and do the face-up myself. There are some dolls on my wishlist I intend to get blank though, with the intention of sending them off to an artist, though that scares me too!

    17. I prefer custom face-ups. There are exceptions, such as my Pukifee Pong --- I was afraid part of my love of the sculpt WAS his face-up so I didn't want to stray from the default --- as well as my Loongsoul Momo who was purchased during a "free face-up" event.

    18. I like the customization part of the hobby a lot, so I go with blank dolls. I'm not that good (yet) but the feeling of completing a faceup is still great!

    19. I only have the one doll myself and I got company faceup for her because I've never tried doing a faceup myself and I kind of doubt I'd be too good at it. :b

    20. I prefer blank dolls and have them painted by an artist according to the character I plan to give him. I think that having it painted this way would give the dolls more character. I also think its cheaper this way and there's a lot of great face up artists from my country.
