Buying a new doll: with or without company faceup?

Oct 6, 2012

?
  1. I buy most of my dolls with the company faceup.

  2. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to get a custom faceup done by an artist.

  3. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to do the faceup myself.

  4. It really depends on the doll.

    1. I don't do face-ups of my own, actually the concept scares me, so I'd rather have the company face-up.

    2. Most of the time I really like the company faceup, so I buy it.

If I can't get a faceup or I don't like it, I'll do it myself, but I am not as good as the professionals, so I choose this only if I'm in the mood to play around--or have no choice (IOS dolls don't come with faceups, for instance).

I REALLY LOVE it when I see people do their own faceups. I love all the creativity and skill involved. But I'm not so great at that myself...

    3. Since I can't do face-up myself, I would definitely chose factory face-up if it's available (since Obitsu don't offer this feature, I would have to send the head to someone else). Besides, company face-ups are very beautiful. ^^

    4. As I suck at doing about anything artistic, I don't do faceups myself, but I really love my girlfrien's style (and as it comes cheaper too) I bought my doll blank and got my girlfriend to do my boy's faceup

    5. I'm really struggling with this question, actually. One of the things I was really excited about was learning to do my own faceups, and I ordered my doll blank because I really cannot stand the default Resinsoul faceup, but I'm pretty low on funding right now, and with decent-quality materials, brushes, sealants, respirator, etc etc, I kind of feel like it's actually going to cost me more to do my own than to comission a decent artist! And the result will probably be super awful the first several times.

Whereas if I commission an artist, my doll spends a couple weeks out of the house and I get back a product I can use and be proud of right away.

But then I won't have done it myself.

      Argh! What to do???

    6. I've gotten all of my dolls with default face-ups, or with whichever face-up the previous owner had done, but I love custom face-ups! I just prefer to have an idea of where they'll start when they get to me. I've only had one of my dolls get a new face-up since I got her, since her old one almost completely chipped off years ago (Bobobie/Resinsoul... >_> why so few layers of sealant?), and she's probably my favorite these days, even if she looks a little amatureish.

    7. I usually feel default faceups are too...basic? I guess they're meant to be flexible and look good with a variety of wigs and eyes and I think that just makes them feel detached for me. Except my Supia, she was bough 2nd hand with a default faceup, and it suits her really well but her it's peeling away :(
I like doing faceups so I usually do them myself, though if I had the patience to wait for open slots I would probably pay other artist to paint my dolls, it's so much easier to fall hopelessly in love with someone else's art work than your own.

    8. depends on the doll!

    9. For me, I guess it would depend on how the doll's original face-up looked. If I loved the features of the doll's face but disliked/wasn't entirely happy the face-up I'd at least attempt to do it on my own before eventually (if I thought I had no hope in getting it done the way I wanted) commission someone else to do it for me. I'm actually pretty eager to try to do a face-up, but at the same time I'm petrified I'll permanently ruin/stain a otherwise beautiful face.

    10. Depending on how close it was to the character's face as I pictured it, I might just try enhancing it a little.....

    11. I guess I would never go for a doll with a company face up. I'm not saying that they can't be very nice or beautiful, but I'd rather have a unique doll. Well, I do have a something against things that appear in big quantities in general so that could explain it. And I guess that it makes them more personal when they have a face up that goes with their personalities.

    12. That old uniqueness argument is so silly. All dolls are unique, whether you get them with a company faceup or do your own. It's the little things you do to them later that brings out any personality that's there. And many company faceups are not made in 'huge quantities', because they're limited by edition. But even those that are basic-stock faceups are still, each one, all done by hand-- i.e. unique.

Anyway, the decision depends on the doll-- and of course, it depends on the faceup. If a default faceup looks meh, or isn't what I have in mind, I'll skip it & do it myself. But if a default faceup is gorgeous, full of personality, and painted by an artist I love, then I definitely get that. Iplehouse's faceups, for example, are as an important part of my collection as the dolls themselves; I just love their paint-work so much. And the fancy sparkly Soom MD faceups on my demon & my merman, I had to get those, because they're just so right.

And if I'm ever unsure, I get the faceup anyway-- it can always be wiped if it turns out to be meh. It's always better to have gotten it & not need it, than to kick yourself later because you wanted it but didn't get it.

    13. I don't think it's silly. It's not the doll being unique that's important, it's the sense that your doll is yours alone. For me, a doll only feels like mine alone when I do the faceup myself.

    14. well i am getting into doing face ups so i do my own and dont get company face ups.

    15. depends on my budget at the moment, i would like to get them with a face up but i could not afford it with my last doll.

    16. I do all of my own faceups and blushing/tattoos. It's part of the bonding experience for me, and all of my dolls are based on characters, so they need to look a certain way and factory faceups rarely do it. I see no reason to send them off to artists when I can do my own and even a very talented artist might not be able to capture the image in my head.

I have owned dolls with faceups by artists (before I knew how to do it) and factory, but if it's an option to buy blank, I do.

    17. I don't mind company faceups as long as I think they look nice to begin with.

    18. I got my Resinsouls with makeup, they were my first dolls so I wanted to have something on their faces while practicing to make my own faceups.

I got my 5Star Angelo with the standard company makeup because it was gorgeous anyway, I got my other 5Star doll without faceup, I intend to do that myself and the same for my Soom.

    19. Depends on the company--some offer better face-ups than others. I've gotten company face-ups on all but two of mine. Both of those were adopted dolls and one already had a custom face-up when I got her. I did have to send the other one out (and wow, was I nervous about it!) but it turned out great.

I dearly wish I could do face-ups myself, but my talents just don't lie in that direction! Even when I commissioned a custom one, I had a heck of a time figuring out the colors!

    20. I get my dolls blank, and do their faceups. I really think it helps me bond with them. Although, I do now have 4 dolls with company faceups that I got second hand. And on the tan skin- I've never done a faceup before on darker skin tone and I was nervous about that, so to start I got them with faceups. I'm still not that great, just passable, but I intend to keep practicing. I feel like I can look at the doll and know it's mine, and mine alone. It's silly, but it makes me proud. No one else's doll looks like mine (for better or worse XD).

Plus, I'm really nervous about chipping the company or customizers faceup and not being able to fix it. I don't want to send my doll anywhere. I want to be able to spray her MSC and fix her up on the kitchen table.
