1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying a new doll: with or without company faceup?

Oct 6, 2012

?
  1. I buy most of my dolls with the company faceup.

  2. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to get a custom faceup done by an artist.

  3. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to do the faceup myself.

  4. It really depends on the doll.

    1. I do my own faceups, and it's my favorite part of getting a new doll- Getting to make them my own, exactly the way i want. I don't have anything against company faceups, i just always have a specific look in mind and it's never what the company face-up looks like.

    2. I usually hire a make-up artist. I ordered BJD with default make-up and most of the time, they look nothing like the pictures on the website. Also, for the most of the time, I am very clear about what I want so I'd prefer to discuss with make-up artist. You don't get to be that much specific if you order BJD with make-up.

    3. I only have one girl, and I bought her with the company faceup! ^_^ At the moment, I'd be way too afraid to order a doll blank and attempt a faceup in fear of ruining a beautiful bjd! Faceup artists are wonderful but I don't think I could afford to buy a BJD and then commission someone on my budget!

    4. It depends, I guess. I mostly prefer without. The characters I have in mind don't look anything like the company's face-up. Besides that, they tend to be expensive, so I prefer getting them blank and sending them to cheaper face-up artists here, who will do what I want for less money.

    5. it depends on the company and the doll. i've heard of companies whose faceups absolutely suck. and then there are just certain dolls who have ugly faceups. research research!

    6. I bought my first Blank and only now am I thinking of attempting to do a face up. The next one I'd like to do company face ups. so i guess I'll see if i ever do my own.

    7. Right now I'm going to stick to doing faceups myself. Even though I'm only getting my first dolls very shortly, the idea of doing the faceup is what really got me started in the hobby. ^-^ If I really liked a company faceup I would consider getting one, and in the case of the Latidoll special set that is coming out soon, they may just come with faceups, in which case I'd keep it till I decided to change it.

    8. Both my dolls so far I got with company faceups although due to a mix up at the company my first doll came with a different faceup to the one I ordered anyway :? I have a blank head though and a few dolls on my wishlist who will have to come blank so that I can get their faces right myself. It depends on what I want and if the company faceup works with my idea for the doll whether I get a blank doll or go for the company faceup

    9. It depends most of the time I say I would rather buy mines blank for the simple fact that I love customization and I want my character to fit that sculpt. But if I really like the companies faceup for example like crobi doll's yeon ho I would rather keep it that way

    10. I've only ever bought one doll with a company faceup, actually... most of mine have faceups by me or were bought secondhand with a faceup done by a previous owner.

    11. Most of my dolls were bought secondhand with either the default company faceup or one done by a previous owner. However I do prefer to do my own faceups, and unless the faceup fits the character I have in mind I'll wipe it and do my own. If I'm buying a doll from the company though I order them blank.

    12. I always buy blank and do my own faceups. At first, I sucked, not gonna lie.
But you know what? It's ok. They're my dolls and I love seeing what different faceups will bring out in a sculpt. I don't think I could feel really attached to a doll if I had no part of bringing her personality to life.
And now, three years later (wow time flies!) I think I've actually gotten pretty decent and I'm proud to show off my girls :)

    13. For me it really depends on the doll. And the price of the face-up ^^; If I have to spend $55-80 for a face-up that I am unsure of what it looks like in person it leaves a little to worry about. But also I think things factor in like if the face-up is free (like with events) then it's like gung-ho y'all.

    14. it's actually interesting. I currently have one doll and I just bought my second. neither will have face ups for the time being, but i'd love to learn how to do face ups myself. when i bought this new doll the other day, my mom asked me if he was coming with a face up. I told her he wasn't and i was thinking about trying to do a face up on him, she made a "hm" sound then told me that if i was going to spend that much on a doll the least I could do was get him a "professional" face up. she really wants me to commission someone else to do the face ups for both my dolls, and every time she does I tell her that if she wants that to happen i'm completely open to donations cuz I'm usually BROKE most of the year OTL (high school student here! parents wont let me get a job either >x> ) but i usually don't like company face ups. I've seen a lot of company face ups that look almost as blank and sterile as a blank doll itself. If i want a face up (and i can't do one myself), i'd commission an artist because i like to have the power to say what i'd like the face up to look like.

    15. I would prefer to buy with company faceup. I don't know how to do faceup my self and do not want to take the hassle sending the heads for face up.

    16. I definitely go with the company faceup every time. In addition to me not having the skills to do it myself, part of what sells me on the doll and makes me fall in love with her even before I get her home is how she looks in the promo pictures. I like to get that when I get my girls home.

    17. It's completely dependent on the company, for me. If the company has beautiful face-ups in the photos, I'm more likely to want to buy a face-up from them. I do have the equipment to do face-ups myself, though.

    18. I usually want to commission someone else to work on the faceups. Some of the company's are really pretty much I can't justify the price whereas if I were to commission someone with about the same price, I can pick and choose how exactly I want it done

    19. I'm new to the hobby, and I'm afraid I'll mess my doll up! I'm a bit artsy fartsy so I'll count on my art experience to carry me to at least tweak a company faceup. The thought of starting blank is intimidating, but I really would like to do my own faceups. Maybe someday I'll get the courage to...

    20. I prefer buying blank dolls so I can paint their faces myself but I'm not against buying an in-stock doll with a faceup.
