1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying a new doll: with or without company faceup?

Oct 6, 2012

?
  1. I buy most of my dolls with the company faceup.

  2. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to get a custom faceup done by an artist.

  3. I buy most of my dolls without the company faceup, to do the faceup myself.

  4. It really depends on the doll.

    1. That really is my internal debate every time I buy a new doll and the one I have now as I look to the future. I think I am at a point in my life where I want to and can afford to get my dolls custom face-ups. It's always nice to have a doll all face-uped when you get it, but I feel like I am more satisfied with a unique face-up for the characters.

    2. Ummm...For me, it depends on which doll. Sometime company face up looks just exactly like what I want he/she to be, then I will definitely choose the default face up service. But generally, I choose blank one and send them to an artist for face up because my skill is way to far away from..."good". :D

    3. For me it all depends on the company and wether I like the style of their company faceup.
If I have an idea for a doll and totally love him blank, I will buy him blank and try to do the faceup myself, as I'm not too bad (not the best, but acceptable xD )
But if I fall in love with a doll that has a gorgeous faceup, I am prepared to pay for a company faceup :)

    4. I buy all my dolls with a face up because I'm so untalented that. I wouldn't dare try doing my own and end up ruining a pretty face :'( . I admire people who do their own face-ups and love looking at photos from face up artists , but I wouldn't send my doll away to get one because I would be to anxious about them getting lost in the post or being a long time without them.

    5. My first two will come with face-ups. My NF14 event head will of course show up blank, so I'm going to have to do my own face-up on her once I have the materials.
I wanted to be able to bond with them as soon as they got here, but wasn't certain how soon I could have my face-up supplies ready.
I think I'll change Chloe pretty quick, but I do like the company default for Celine, so that may stay for a while.
Future dolls will likely depend on if I have my face-up supplies ready at the time of purchase, and if I like the company default face-up.

    6. It depends. My first and second were a YOSD and tiny. I liked their faceup and I had never done a faceup before so I thought I'ld play it safe. Now i think back, that was a good idea becoz I think I would have gone blind trying to paint them.
Later on, I ordered a larger male with facep. He looked so good on the site but when he came, I was really disappointed with it. After that, I ordered ALL my dolls blank.
The unpredictability of faceup artists aside, a couple of my dolls are blond but the company faceup gives them black eyebrows which would look really weird with a blond wig so I'm forced to do my own faceups. And some companies have a tendency to dump loads of glitter on their faces which wouldn't work for any of my dolls.
So...yeah. I'm forced to do my own faceups. I have a hard time painting girly boys but I seem to fare better with manly boys.

    7. It depends. If I like the company face-up a lot, I order them with a face-up (like Dollzone Feilian!). But I've ordered more dolls without face-up to be honest (although I liked some of their company face-ups). I guess it makes the doll more personal if you add your own face-up.

    8. It can depend, as some company faceups are good for the character I'm trying to portray, but many don't fit at all.
However, no matter which option I pick, I still typically send off dolls to artists. I cant do faceups myself anyway, some dolls with default faceups may need some additional features like pointy ears or extra patterns, but I'm also allergic to MSC, and not knowing whether the company uses it or not is always an issue Even if the doll doesn't need any modifications to the default faceup, they still get a respray with a sealant that I do not have any reaction to.

    9. It varies. I do my own faceups a lot. But if I love the factory faceup up and think it fits the character, I'll pay for it to be done professionally. I've never sent a doll out to a faceup artists.

    10. I'm going to buy my dolls blank because I usually don't like the company face ups that much (or they are good but don't fit my image of the particular character)!

    11. Most of the dolls I've ever bought came with the company face-up, and while I thought I'd love it, I always end up unsatisfied. With the exception of my Primrose (who has a Viridian House faceup I adore), I always want to change the face and do it myself. Always. So now if I want a doll I simply buy it blank ^^

    12. I'm currently learning how to do face ups on a cheap practice head, but I would my dolls with the face up because I'd hate to do it on them myself and then mess up. When I get better I'll wipe them and do it myself.

    13. I bought my dolls with default face up. I think it'll be that way until I learn how to do the face up myself.

    14. I bought mine without a faceup, but regret it. I'm really intimidated to invest so much money in all the supplies required to do faceups, firstly because I have only one doll that needs to be done, plus that to paint (as an amateur) on something so expensive is terrifying! I wish I could have ordered company faceup, and I asked for it, but they said they could not do faceups at the time I was ordering. :(

    15. When you get a new doll, do you generally order it with the company faceup? Or do you order it blank then send it to someone for a custom faceup. OR do you just do the faceup yourself

I usually get the company faceup and keep that until i'm sick of it or want something more detailed.

    16. I order it blank, then do it myself usually, though I have commissioned an artist to do a couple of mine. All of my dolls represent very specific characters, and I usually find company faceups to be too delicate and pretty, or too generic for my characters. If I saw a company faceup that was just perfect for my doll, and I didn't think I could do one better or commission an artist to do as good at the same price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. So far, I just haven't found one that appealed to me enough to pay extra for it.

    17. I have always opted for the company face up. I appreciate that a "default" face up is made by a skilled artist. There is only one doll that I have ever purchased blank, and that's only because she was on a Black Friday sale (an off-topic Hujoo). I ended up selling her before I ever made the decision to send her off to get her face done. I just can't connect to a blank doll, even if I have a plan for her face.

Plus, I hate the idea of the hassle of sending her off. I want to buy the doll and that's the end of it. My "artist" days are in the past and I have no desire to buy the supplies needed to paint a face myself.

    18. It depends.

Usually I am after the blank sculpt, and I plan to either paint it myself or send it away to be painted. It depends on if I think I can pull off the faceup I imagine, and if not, I try to find an artist who is best for that painting style.
But sometimes I will like a default faceup and keep it. Or I plan on wiping it but end up keeping the default faceup until it gets a little worn, and get them a new face later.

    19. I always buy blank!

But that's because I prefer to do my faceups by myself. I can't "bond" with a doll that I didn't paint myself. My skills might not be professional quality but they're good enough for me and I like seeing improvements over time. The creative side of the hobby is a big part of my enjoyment :D

    20. I have always gotten my dolls blank, even my very first one. Doing face-ups was a learning process, but I've gotten quite good at them over the years and honestly I think I do a better job at "capturing" how I want my doll to look better then anyone else could. Doing their face-ups is a big part of my dolls being a creative outlet for me :)
