    1. Both my friend Coleen and I have a number of full set dolls in common and even with the default wig, faceup and eyes they are very different looking because the faceup although default is quite different even if it is the default one. Moreover, their personalities are totally different.

    2. what i dislike about full package is that usually ppl just keep the doll with its original wig and clothes and then YES it is very less personal. i can understand u want ur doll to have clothes, but u could just order clothes at the same time and it'll do the same...

    3. That's what I did when I started.
Then over time, I bought based on my preferance for the doll, or what they could look like according to what I wanted in a doll.

    4. I think it's less personal for me - I would like the clothes, wig and eyes, but I would want to do their own faceup... the two dolls on the way are ones where I plan to do the faceup myself, since I want them to look exactly the way I want them to (only doll I really plan on getting with a company faceup is Luo, but only because I think the company faceup is absolutely perfect).
Though I think a fullset doll could definitely have a personal touch if it's customized - even a different wig or a new set of eyes can change the look entirely. So don't worry about what people think of your doll - fullset or not, she's still personally special and just for you ^_^

    5. We make clothes for dolls (do it longer then we're in the hobby, in fact), so I never buy clothes.

We can do make-ups, but most of our dolls are bought with default make-up because we happen to like it.

As for wigs... most dolls I bought went with random wigs and they usually weren't the ones I had in mind. So even if I would like to buy a doll with promo wig I hadn't had the chance. But no doll of my ever went bold. Usually i have enough time to order and receive the wig wile the doll is made :D

So, basically, I buy the doll with default wig and/or make-up if there is such option and I like them. And I buy the doll without make-up and wig if they aren't what I want to see for the doll. And I feel no difference in how "personal" each method is. If I like the doll it's always personal for me.

    6. I have two LE dolls whom I bought because I liked the dolls. I didn't care for the full sets particularly, but they were a good deal. I use bits of the full set clothing, but they don't dress in it at all. It was nice to have the clothes rather than a naked doll, but I sew, so that wasn't a huge problem. The full set wigs don't do much for me either, but I have used them. Both dolls now have multiple wigs to chose from. Their eyes are OK, but I will probably try other ones when I settle upon the colors I like for them. I like the default face-ups well enough, but I'll repaint them without a qualm when they become worn enough to make it necessary. I feel a little bad about it sometimes, but I bought them and they're mine to do with what I will.

I tend to have pretty strong characters in my head, so a full set actually gets in the way a little bit with my bonding with the doll. I didn't begin to feel close to these two until I had done things to personalize them a bit. But if you see a full set that speaks to you, that's great. Not everyone has the skills or desire to do face-ups or sew, and I'm glad that there are dolls out there for those folks.

    7. I don't think it's less personal at all to buy full package :)

For my second doll, because he was from a limited event I had to buy him with school uniform, wig etc.

If I bought another doll not msd and the doll came with an outfit I liked I wouldn't mind buying it full set so the doll wouldn't be naked :sweat
But I would most likely buy a doll with faceup already since I cannot do it myself and I have no idea what I would want the doll to have lol~

I think it's pretty easy to customise your doll, with different wig, eyes, outfit anyways :]

    8. I don't think it is less personal, I just never want everything in the full package so if i can I buy non limited or non full package dolls

    9. I have had fullset dolls but I only kept their default wigs and clothes for sentimental value. I never changed their eyes or face ups for fear of them getting lost in the mail, and fear of damaging a head when removing eyes :sweat

If I bought a fullset doll now I would probably do a split with someone and just take the naked doll and maybe a misc. item like the shoes or something. I appreciate fullset dolls but I'm not into owning dolls as collector's items anymore.

    10. Sure, the act of buying a fullset is not impersonal, but in my opinion keeping the doll in its fullset clothes, wig, and eyes is impersonal. Some people have said, "You can customize a fullset!" Um, if you change a fullset, it's not the fullset anymore. It's customized. However, that statement is debatable, as I'm pretty sure there's a thread somewhere that asks, "If you alter a fullset, is it a fullset anymore?" :sweat (In case you can't tell, my answer to that is "no".)

This is not completely related to the topic, but- I'm actually surprised at the number of people who let company photos sway their like or dislike of a doll overall. Pretty much every doll can look any way you want, regardless of how the company presents them. If there's a fullset you like but the doll's face sculpt isn't what you like about it, why not just buy all the components of that fullset and put it on a doll whose sculpt you like more? And likewise, if there's a doll you love whose clothing you hate, why not buy it naked and put another doll's fullset outfit on it? Frankly I just don't understand how disliking the way a doll is presented keeps you from buying it... changing the presentation is the easiest part! o_O

Having said all that, I'm going to agree with everybody else in the thread and say that it's definitely not "wrong" to buy a fullset. There's no way dolls "should be" put together. Just like there are people who handle their dolls and people who keep their dolls behind glass- There are people who customize dolls and people who buy pre-customized dolls. For me, I have never seen a fullset that I liked 100%, so instead I must take all my favorite things and mash them together myself XD

    11. I must disagree with the statement that if you alter a full-set it's not a full-set anymore. If you change the eyes, wig or clothes but keep all the original pieces & don't do anything that can't be undone, like mods or a different face-up, you still have a full-set doll. You're merely playing with it. There's no law that requires full-sets to be kept absolutely pristine. If you keep all the original pieces & replace them when or if you sell the doll, it can still be considered a full-set.

    12. My first doll was a full-set. Everything about him, his clothes, his face, etc, appealed instantly to me. Honestly, everyone's opinion on the uniqueness of full-sets is their own. Some people have a very distinct image in mind for a specific "character", others do not. For me, the doll's character came through in his company photos. I see other owner photos, and they're not the same doll to me. His character came into my mind after I saw his company photos, and after he came home, he developed into a very distinct personality. He still has his full-set clothes, though he doesn't exclusively wear them (too hot in Florida for cords and long sleeves year round). I've been on the lookout for a set of natural looking blue eyes, but until then, his default eyes fit his personality just fine. And I love his face-up, so no, in my opinion, your doll is your doll and your character, regardless of how he came to you. YOU put the personality into the doll, not the other way around. It's all based on your preferred aesthetics.

For me, it's hard to imagine how a sculpt looks properly without a face-up. So I feel it's important for anyone looking to purchase a BJD to look at a wide variety of owner photos in addition to the company stock. It's true that I've seen dolls I thought were ugly and unpersonable in company photos that turn out to be lovely and attractive characters in person or in owner photos. It's the other way around, too. Just go with your gut.

    13. I am keeping my SDC Kurt's face up as default as I can, I am not planning to change anything about him, but that's because his lovely face is limited edition. As for his wig and clothes, I've given him a new wig because his LE one doesn't fit properly!

I partly agree with this, most dolls these days come with eyes and there is the option of a face-up, and most sites that sell dolls also sell wigs, clothes, shoes...so it is possible to buy a doll that comes with all the pieces you're looking for that also isn't a full-set doll if all you want is a doll that isn't bald, blind and naked.

    14. I got to be mean an say that it is less personal to get a fullset. 'Cause what is personal about it if someone else has planned how the changeable parts of the doll look like? But if you like it, sure, buy it. I don't say it's not as good, but personal? No.

Though I guess it would be good to buy a fullset if you do have same sized doll you can share the accessories with.

    15. I feel inclined to add that many full sets come with outfits that you can get no other way than with that fullset or on the second hand market. My fullset is coming with a Baby th Stars Shine Bright dress that comes only with her and her sister doll. This is not the only dress I will have her in, but it is certainly one I would have purchased anyway.

In fact, I already have almost an entire wardobe for her. I purchased the fullset not for the easiness of a completed doll or because I felt she was perfect and unchangable, but because it contains a wig, shoes, and dress that I would have purchased for her anyway. I don't find purchasing a fullset any less personal, unless maybe you never change that doll at all, but even then the doll is still your own personal bundle of joy.

    16. It depends on a couple of things. For me I feel like the fullsets are cookie cutter dolls. Like they don't have their own look that stands out and makes them unique. I voted yes because I believe the doll is less personal because it's not customized. But if you like the fullset then whats wrong with that? Sometimes the fullsets come with outfits or wigs you can't get any other way. And sometimes i've been drawn to a doll more because of the fullset. Now i must also point out that a fullset limited to me is different than a fullset you can get all the time because I don't consider limiteds cookie cutters. So yes I voted yes but if you truly love the doll the way it comes as a fullset then I don't think it really matters whether I or anyone else thinks it's less personal.

    17. One thing to keep in mind, however, is how if you set the same sculpt--even wearing the same clothes--next to another of the same, you're going to notice a difference. It's all in the owner. I think the idea is that a full-set comes as a pre-set character, but it's the owner who imprints the personality. I've also had folks take another look at my full-set bought doll and are surprised that it's that particular sculpt. Change their clothes, switch their wig ... it's completely different. There's nothing written that says your BJD has to be completely unique and one-of-a-kind in appearance. Some people aren't creative enough to realize a specific look for their dolls, others don't have the resources. It doesn't make their full-sets any less special.

    18. My first doll came as a full-set, which was really a good thing because I had nothing else for her (wigs, clothes, eyes, etc. :sweat) I don't think it (or the fact that I purchased her second-hand) made her any less 'personal'. Once she arrived at my house, she was *my* Meika-girl! :)

I've since gotten her different eyes & she now rarely wears her full-set clothes (gotta keep 'em nice! ;)), but I don't regret buying a full-set doll at all, especially for my first one, and don't feel like she's in any way less personal than my other two dolls (who came as a separate head from one seller & a body (with free shoes :)) from another and blank-faced with an assorted mish-mash of clothes, wigs & accessories, respectively).

    19. Hmm...depends. I totally understand it when people buy a full-package doll when it's the first...or when it's a limited one. And sometimes the outfit which is included is just great or not available alone or you simply like the default face-up.
Usually such people WILL change the doll after a time, the full-package is just a good base to start of.

However, what I really don't like are people buying full-set dolls and never ever change something on them. Same clothes, same wig, same eyes, same face-up for all the time. I mean, except the outfit part, it might be totally understandable but...hell, you're not wearing all the same clothes the whole time, aren't you (hopefully:ablah:)?
Buying a full-package just because of lazyness is...sad.

    20. I've always been of the opinion 'BUY WHATEVER YOU LIKE/LOVE"! I own 2 full set dolls and love them very much. However, I may not buy anymore only because I find it so appealing to have a one-of-a-kind doll. I have too much fun planning out what my doll will be like and I will always know that "NO ONE" will have a doll like mine! I GUESS YOU CAN SAY THAT MY DOLLS ARE "MY" LIMITED EDITIONS! :)
