Buying more dolls when you still have unfinished ones

Feb 3, 2013

    1. I still need to buy my first doll a proper wig and my forth one is on the way :sweat

    2. I like projects. The crafty side was a large part of the draw to this hobby for me. I got one doll last year who still isn't done now, and likely won't be done for months yet. Sometimes I get bored and put it away for a while. Other times I want to work, so I pull it out again. Being able to pull out something to work on keeps me from buying another doll sometimes, if all I wanted was something to work on. Other times it doesn't cuz I just wanted a new doll. :sweat

    3. Well, I never seem to go for the easy dolls. Even when the mold in itself is readily available, 9 times out of 10 I want to make a hybrid and it's finding the different doll parts that proves to be very difficult. So yes, I buy dolls when I still have unfinished ones.

For example: I've had a Williams head since 2010, but I'm still searching for his body. My Peroth has been with me ever since 2007; he already has a wig, eyes, an comissioned outfit and shoes, but he still lacks a face-up and - again - a body. I've only recently discovered what body I want for him, now I have to find it.

I have this list of dolls - and parts - that I 'need' to complete my crew and made a deal with myself that I'm buying whatever I find first. But when I've found the parts needed to complete a doll, I have this rule to first finish it, before I go hunting for another piece of resin. It's like a giant jigsaw puzzle!

    4. I quite like things to be finished...so I can play with them (i.e. dress 'em up, make clothes and props for them, and take pictures), so all my dolls are clothed, bewigged and faced-up. I send them off for face-up if I don't like the company one, before I play with them. I am not keen on blank dolls, and I won't be doing any modding.

    5. As bluemoonjules knows, I'm terrible at finishing dolls! I like to buy a doll rather than clothes/wigs etc. so until this week I had lots of dolls sitting around in rags or naked, and planning to order 2 more! But I think maybe I've got fond of my exisiting dolls, to the extent that I really really wanted to buy them something nice and make them look as good as they deserve to look - So I've spent my money on stuff for them rather than new dollies for me! Because of course it's all for me really as I get pleasure from looking at nicely dressed dolls!

Of my 8 dolls only the 2 second hand ones came with company faceup (not counting my 90cm boy as I hate his company faceup!) So faceups are an ongoing thing as I'm new to it and fairly dissatisfied with my efforts, although they are OK and even quite nice if I stop being so critical of them! Bits to tweak though, and Eleni may get a new face as she was my first effort - but maybe not.....I think you never really finish a doll if you buy it blank and naked, as you are always wanting to improve on what you've done - or maybe that's just me being critical?

But yes I have been pushing myself this week to get all my dolls at least DRESSED (wigs and shoes being something I'm usually good at buying early on - yaaay) And it's stressed me so much! I've been obsessed by it - and I'm thinking well is it a hobby if it makes you feel this stressed? Hmmm - I thought hobbies were meant to be relaxing! I think maybe it's now gone beyond the realms of 'just a hobby' LOL - They OWN me!

    6. I think it's fine to buy new ones... especially when a limited edition suddenly pops up and who knows if it'll never ever come back on sale ^^;; So grab it while you can or regret later when its sold out

    7. I constantly do this. My first doll, I went all out for. Company faceup, the wig and eyes I wanted for him, and a couple different changes of clothing, shoes, jewelry accessories, and a stand. A year later I ordered a boyfriend for him and had wanted to do the same thing, but the company didn't sell any clothes, just dolls, so I had no idea what would fit. They also don't sell wigs or eyes (or didn't at the time), so I bought some random stuff on Ebay to try. I've had him over a year now and he's still borrowing clothes from my first doll.

In the meantime, I've bought a lot more dolls. They either wear their default outfits (bought as fullsets) or nothing at all, for the most part. :\ I hate that. Some of them don't even have faceups. The two most recent dolls I have were by luck able to fit some clothes I bought for other dolls and don't fit them, but mostly I've bought naked and/or blank dolls and haven't done much with them. It's a bad habit. I'd rather have dolls with multiple sets of clothing and accessories/stands than a hoard of nakeds I don't enjoy playing with for their lack of wardrobe, hair, eyes, and faceups. The problem is that a lot of them were limited editions I thought I had to buy right then, even naked or whatever or else I'd never find them again. Like DollShe said they're discontinuing their current dolls, so I hurried to buy a Rosen. He has no faceup and no clothes or wig. He's just been sitting naked on a shelf and I haven't touched him since I bought him.

    8. This is a big problem for me. I have yet to have a finished doll. I'm thinking of ordering my 7th doll Dx I need to concentrate on eye, clothes and wigs more. It's just hard for me to find the right stuff because I have a hard time in-visioning an internet image item on my doll.

    9. I must admit I have this problem too. I have more than a few dolls needing mod work, clothes, new wig...or just that new set of eyes to make them pop. My newest doll does not even have clothes, but I am already looking for that new doll that will make me go.."Aw!" I like collecting dolls especially if they do have face ups already and I sometimes envision a image for my doll, but when I meet them their all "No, I like this this and this." So mine are forever unfinished especially my first one.

    10. All of my dolls are at varying stages of completion - generally they all have a set character/ a face-up I'm happy with and suitable eyes. However since the characters are set I generally take a while to find an outfit/wig that suits them...

One of my girls has no clothes at all - not for lack of trying she just rejects everything I buy her outright! And I'm guilty of owning 4 floating heads... One of them technically has a body, but has rejected it, an other will need a massively modded body, and the other 2 need saving up for...

    11. I personally don't buy blank dolls, I order them with face-ups already done because I am new to the hobby, but I am horrible at buying new ones before I have the old ones all put together... right now I am working on a Satyr (Grover from Percy Jackson to be precise) and I am just getting the right parts for him when I see new BJD's and am compelled to buy them, I think it is normal with anyone who collects them, when you see a doll that just calls to you, you have to get it even if you arent done with your previous one.

    12. I am guilty as charged! I buy before I am done with a previous! I have had to make a list of what various dolls need.

    13. I don't think I'd buy another doll at least until my current doll had arrived and had a wig, eyes, face-up, shoes and 2 outfits (one for going out and on to sleep in)

    14. I like to try and finish dolls before I get a new one. That said though, I only have three. Well, not even. My third hasn't even arrived yet. XD I had my first for about a year and a half before I bought his wife. He was completely finished. He had two outfits, hair, eyes, tattoos. The second, she's nearly finished, but I've already ordered the third. It bothers me though. Poor Lily doesn't have any hair. I know it's only because I haven't found the right wig (But I have searched a lot), and because I don't have the supplies for her tattoos. So, before I get a fourth, if I ever, I've decided to really learn how to do all of the fancy things with my dolls, and get everyone situated. I don't like having unfinished dollies lying about.

    15. I have all kinds of floating heads, floating bodies, bald and unpainted dolls around with temporary clothes, and many of them were purchased when the others were still in their current conditions. I'm trying at least somewhat to work toward "finishing" who I have (hunting for an elusive wig, and hoping to get some time to work on faceups/painting/modding the others over the summer) but there's still a strong chance another boy will come home while I work on that. :sweat I think I've just gotten used to the fact that there's always a dolly project to do!

    16. I have this problem.
I have a floating msd head waiting for a secondhand body to come. But im surfing the marketplace (not doa/not english based) for new released msd liz head... :(

    17. I'm the same. I have 4 dolls and neither of them are really finished. I ordered my Honey Delf Choco about 2 months ago and it arrived but I wasn't happy with the way it looked, so I changed gender. I am in the process of buying his clothes/wig/eyes etc and I have already ordered my MNF Chloe as well. So I get what you mean. Also, I have my PKF sat with no face up, waiting to send her off.

So many unfinished plans! haha :doh

    18. I definitely have this problem. I have have heads waiting on faceups, heads waiting for bodies, undressed dolls but still find myself shopping for more dolls :)

    19. I had parts on order at Volks the same time my fiance found another doll I wanted on Ebay. she came from the US so it didnt take very long for her to get here. All the excitement went into this doll that when my volks came, I wasn't very excited...well I was but she was also missing a piece to be completed. So I felt bad that I had this other doll while she sat on the shelf not getting attention. oh but when I got the piece to finish her I was spoiling her so much I felt bad for all my other dolls so I had a month of clothes making for all the others.

    20. My boyfriend forbids me to purchase more!! Unless - there's a super special occasion lol.
He also will ensure that I play with my current doll before allowing me to get another because he's worried I will just leave the others lying around and concentrate on the new one. And I kind of agree with that too. My attention span for a doll could be quite low :(
