1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying secondhand: Boxes and certificates...are they must haves for you?

Dec 30, 2012

    1. The box would be nice but some sort of proof of the dolls legitimacy is necessary. Not all dolls come with paperwork so something like a receipt or good feedback would have to suffice. With the growing problem of recasts I would not feel comfortable buying a doll with no proof that the doll and seller was legit.

    2. I have bought the majority of my dolls secondhand and most of them haven't come with the original box or COA. I do appreciate it when a seller can include those items in the sale (though the box is not very important to me; I already have too many). Also, as I tend to prefer older and less desirable BJD sculpts, certificates haven't been necessary for me so far. There are a few dolls on my wishlist however that I am aware are currently being recast, and if and when I decide to purchase one I will either screen the seller carefully or just buy from the company directly.

    3. well I need them, I just afriad if it is recasted.

    4. Certificate if authenticity would be a definite yes. The box not a big deal. I've bought all my dolls second hand and only had one person who didn't have the original box. And go figure the doll was a beat up mess. I think it helps to have these things if you're going to resell the doll as most people I've dealt with ask for the certificate and sometimes the box as well.

    5. I think I could make it without the box but no without the certificate of authenticity because I LOVE THEM, they're really different depending on each company and let's say I'd love to 'collect them' but it would be a plus if it has the original box also 'cause I think they're really pretty too. So, yeah... But as long as the person could prove to me that the doll is in fact, original, then I think I'd had just to let pass the certificate and box thing ~ :)

    6. I think so too.

    7. I have never once thought of throwing away my doll boxes. Even though they take up heaps of space.
I definitely would want the certificates with it if i were buying.

    8. Not really, but I am aware that some dolls don't come with certificates (my Pukis never did, my AoD You never did, my Brownie never did), in fact, I believe my Doll Chateau, my AoD dolls except my You and my two DBDoll Rongers are the only ones that have, and most of my dolls are company direct/bought through official dealers. I did once have the original box for all of them, but I don't any more except for my Puki and Brownie (stepmothers...)

      So no, I don't really care overmuch about the inclusion of certificates or boxes. They are nice, but I know many just don't come with them, especially if you've ended up hybridising the doll, most floaty heads or independent body purchases like I do don't come with them. I carry no fear of recasts, maybe my penchant for getting unpopular dolls or ones with not commonly looked for aesthetics helps in that ^^;

    9. the boxes do not matter to me, but if they have it, it's better to go with the doll

    10. I'm usualy not one to get involved in conversations like this but as of yesterday I actually have an opinion on this. Um HECK YEAH!!

I was taken for an absolute ride in a trade on Facebook this month, trading my Soom Vesuvia Original for a Kinoko Juice Kiki 'o' and a Jill + Cash from the trader only to discover upon their arrival that the handmade eyes they are supposed to come with were "missing" from the package. I contacted Kinoko Juice through a Japanese speaking relative to request replacements due to them falling out of the damaged packaging in transit only to find I had just traded for two recast fakes. Now I did all my research, I know where are when these dolls were sold, the woman sent me photos of herself at the booth with the original creators and I have filed a complaint with Paypal for fraudulent activity only to discover the account is innactive.

From now on when I buy second hand from a new source other than those on DoA that I trade with regularly I will require proof of originality by way of a CoA that can be corroborated by the company where possible.

I've contacted KinokoJuice, my intention is to send both the recasts to the company to be destroyed. Hopefully they will put me on a wait list for future sales. Absolutely Gutted!!

    11. I prefer when dolls come with some form of a box and papers, but its never been a deal breaker. Only 3 of my dolls have a CoA and those were bought new (one maybe not, but I think it was, could be a birth card lol). Most of my used dolls never had one to begin with. They all came in a box, some in just a shipping box, but I never minded :) if I sell a doll, I try to include most of what came with it (box, any paperwork I can find, a pair of eyes, etc). But no, it doesn't really bug me if a doll doesn't have its box or papers.

    12. The ceritficate is important, but not like a must for me. The box is not imporat at all as long as the person knows how to pack the doll with care.

I mean, most of my dolls are second hand and they dont have their boxes and i love them all the same :D

    13. I honestly do not care, It would only get lost in my house like everything else, and if I have those issues so might other people, it's really not a massive deal to me, even if I did get a box, it would have to be collapsed down so it could be stored somewhere else, so I don't see the point personally.

    14. The box isn't important to me, it would just end up taking up space. The paperwork would be nice to have, but if I don't have it, then it's no big deal~ I think just having the doll and knowing that it's with me now if enough.

    15. If it is a limited doll, the certificate is a must. The box however, is less important to me, and I would not factor it in very much when buying a doll.

    16. Boxes take up valuable doll space for me, but I'll probably keep my LE boxes when I get them. I would definitely keep certificates if my dolls come with them. I see it as a matter of pride, and completely necessary for the secondhand market.

    17. Boxes are nice but not a must. I don't really care about them, so long as the doll is packaged safely enough to get to me undamaged.
If the doll is limited or suppose to come with a certificate of authenticity then I would probably prefer those to come with the doll.

    18. I really only care about the dolls. I dont mind if they are not in original box or if they have their COA . Just so I know they are NOT recasts.

    19. I think with all the attention on recasts being readily available these days, I would say a certificate of authenticity would be important to second hand buyers, so they know that they're buying a legitimate doll.

That being said, I bought my Iriya Ai without her certificate, but there is a small metal plate on her head cap that has the custom house brand printed in it, and I remember that my D.O.D Luke had the logo carved into his head. The problem with carved logos though is that those will show in the recasts as well, so even then you won't know whether they're authentic or not :(

I think in the end it comes down to personal preference. If you want to buy a doll with the thought of resale in the back of your mind, then yes, certificates are needed. If you just want to buy and own a doll that you honestly intend to keep for the rest of your days, then a doll without certificates may be more forgivable.
