Buying secondhand: Boxes and certificates...are they must haves for you?

Dec 30, 2012

    1. Nope, I want a doll because I like it. It can be new or used, in the original box or cardboard wrapped in bubble wrap. My dolls are going to be held and played with and used. Some dolls are beautiful and rare and I certainly understand collecting for that reason, to have dolls to display and not touch or as an investment. It's just not important to me at this time.

    2. Erm...I think I lost my boy's paper. That's okay! I don't plan to sell him!

I suppose I can see where people come from on wanting the original papers. Recasts I hear are getting much more common.

    3. The box doesnt matter to me too terribly, but I do prefer to have a certificate (I collect them!)

    4. I've never though about it... It's nice to have the box and certificate, but I don't care if they're not included. I just have to check the seller's feedbacks and be sure if it's not a recast.

    5. At least I don't want to buy a doll without the original certificate, as may the box could have been recycled if it's too big, but certificate is essential >,<

    6. I don't really care about boxes or certificates. The doll is the most important thing to me.

    7. For me, not at all. I don't need a certificate to bond with a doll. I actually enjoy buying second-hand dolls because sometimes they have some added benefits (sueding, blushing, etc), and even if not, its not all that different from getting a new doll assuming the condition is good, and it helps save money.

    8. As I understand it; any BJD would be worth a bit more with the original box, clothes, wig, (or nude), certification, plates, however; for me, if the girl, boy or fantasy being is in good shape and been taken care of lovingly, I would definitely consider adoption.

    9. I want a doll's box if it's available but it's not a deal breaker if it isn't. I've bought quite a few dolls that didn't come with a box and some of them were brand new.

Most of my dolls didn't come with certificates so I'm not bothered if a doll doesn't come with one but it is nice to have a little proof that a doll is legit.

    10. I do prefer the box because I store mine in their boxes. Bluefairy and Kid Delf dolls don't come with certificates when new, so that hasn't been an issue. But yeah, a box is a must-have for me.

    11. I used to not care...

BUT, lately, with all the talk about re-cast dolls, especially for the rare, limited and expensive... I'm going to be asking for that kind of stuff just for peace of mind. Sad that I no longer feel that safe in that respect...

    12. I've never bought second-hand dolls but I'm thinking about it. It would be nice to have the box. But if I would really like the doll and if I trusted the seller I probably wouldn't mind. But I agree with April that with the upcoming of recasts you cannot be too carefully. Just some hours ago, I was looking for a Fairyland Littlefee. Got on a website. Was a recast. A good thing it was mentioned !

    13. I'd buy a doll without a box or certificate.
What am I going to do with that stuff anyways? D: Just leave it laying around,is the answer.
Maybe in the future, I'll want that stuff, but right now I just enjoy having my dolls.c:

    14. I think both the boxes and certificates are really important to me. Not that I would want to sell any of my dolls but my family is growing so quickly when I'm old, gray and 85 I will have the certificates to help me recall the sculpts and names of my 54,000 bjds!
Never keep my dolls in their boxes coz it just seems to cruel. I got them to play with and to amuse me so they are always outside but my IH BIDd sleep in their opened boxes on the cushions at night!
It will be nice to have all their boxes around if they needed safekeeping or moving someday by someone who didn't truly know their worth and sentimental value.

    15. Although I suppose I can see the appeal of having the original box and papers, I'm just not that concerned about it to be honest... Part of that might be that in my experience, Certificates come with the original buyer's name on them and somehow having a piece of paper with someone elses' name just seems a little odd to me. XD Initially I tried to keep the boxes for all my kids, but in the end it sortof seemed like too much hassle and they've vanished to make more room.

So buying a doll second hand without box and papers would never trouble me, it's the resin I'm after, after all, not the cardboard. ;3

    16. I'm a bit of a nut about things like that; if choosing between two identical dolls and one has box and papers and the other doesn't, I will choose the one with box and papers. Completion is kinda important for me.

    17. Unless it's an LE, I really don't care. But without a letter of authenticity/original documents, any LE is a no-go.

    18. I like having their original box, just because they are great for storage - but it's not required!
As for paperwork, I have Freya's and it's pretty basic - nothing fancy.

I guess someone would want it for whenever their doll becomes an antique but there has been debate over if they'll hold their value that long.
People also look for paper work to ensure their doll isn't a recast, though that can be faked too.
Thankfully, fake dolls have yet to become a huge problem in the 2nd hand market so I dont really worry so much when buying here. :)

    19. I don't know about Bluefairy, but Kid Delf do have certificates (at least those produced since 2009). I have a couple and both have paperwork (well, one has a card certificate, the other has paperwork).

    20. I prefer to have the original box and any original official papers that come with the doll. It feels more complete that way to me.

Recently, I've lamenting selling my fairyland pukipuki because I loved his green box and the checkered sleeping bag he came with (he was in stock at DDE. I have no idea when he was made). I was so disappointed to find out they've switched to the foam lining now for pukipukis and the box colors change. I've already ordered a replacement for him through DDE and I found someone here selling a green pukipuki box with a checkered bag! But she has not responded to my last pm to buy it. :(

I guess it is suspicious in a way, buying just a box. But the color and the bag were so integral to his character. :(
