Buying Things For A Doll You Don't Have.

Jun 24, 2011

    1. I'm... very recently guilty of that one, haha. There was a deal I couldn't pass up on a pair of leggings I'd wanted for a long time, but they are definitely for one of the future dolls on my wishlist! (and then a cute hoodie purchased along with them...)

But I'd also recently gotten a wig that I'd planned on giving to my first female MSD, whenever that happens.

The good news with buying things ahead of time for a girl MSD is that at least one of my boys in the same size will usually be happy to use whatever it is I've bought ahead of time! I also have a pair of eyes that were accidentally ordered, but that I wound up keeping knowing that I would use one of them for a future doll.

Buying ahead of time for a size I don't own, though, that would be tricky. I mean, I could do the research necessary to know that I was getting something that would be in scale, it would just be having it and being unable to use it, since I technically am able to use most of the 'girl' things on my boys, but having only MSD and smaller, the couple of SD-scale things I happen to have just sit around (luckily I was collecting miniature random items before I started collecting dolls, so it's not too weird to me, but I do itch to have a use for certain things).

    2. Isn't it fun having wigs on standby? I have a few that just don't work for anyone in my current crew so I'm saving them for a future doll. I have a curly blond Monique Gold wig I got in a swap that just... Doesn't fit any of them (It's an SD wig I think) so if I ever get an SD I'll be saving it for that one... And I have a grey fur wig and a purple synthetic wig that fit MSD heads so if I ever find another MSD I want, I know what wigs to try out (and the purple one is getting modded BIG time.)

    3. I typically buy things for dolls before I even have them. Before I got a body for my DollGa/Leeke Noella, I had a huge box of wigs for her! I ordered an entire outfit for my Miyu when I still had 3 months of layaway to go! The only one I wasn't prepared for was my MNF Liria - she still doesn't have clothes, eyes, or a wig, she's borrowing from my other MSD.

    4. I am loving it... I mean, Vince is pretty versatile, as it is, as far as gender presentation goes. Which is probably normal for non-mature minis, they're not generally super-defined that way, so I can always try out things for a future girl on him. (also I discovered that when it comes to Minifees, Pete can fit several things that would normally be more suited to a mnf girl-- shoes and stockings, mostly, anything that doesn't involve the hips and booty though. I mean, one of the shirts I bought for him looks good on my sister's mnf girl, so...)

But yes, the wigs in particular are a danger, I have started making a list of wigs I'll eventually want, and if I spend all my money on these beautiful wigs, I'll never save up for the dolls they really belong on, haha.

    5. Oh I know that feeling. When I got my first MSD girl, I wasn't sure about her size so I did grab my boy to be a clothes model. Funny story about that... My mom walked in while I was trying on this REALLY girly dress on him, took one look at him and said and I quote:

"I knew you would do this to him eventually."

The wigs can be tricky but fun. I think I love wig shopping as much as I love shopping for the actual dolls.

    6. I'm in a constant state of buying things for dolls I don't have, not online, but if I see somthing in a store that looks like it would fit them I get it.

    7. I always plan entire outfits for dolls I don't have, but I always get afraid to purchase them. What if I decide against getting the doll and then can't sell the stuff I've bought because nobody wants it? Or the sizing may be completely wrong and I've wasted a lot of money. Ahh, so many things could go wrong.

    8. I would buy things for a doll that's already been ordered, but I wouldn't buy anything for a doll I'm planning on buying in the future. It's because I don't know what could happen to those plans. Maybe I end up not wanting the doll or I take a left turn on the character design.

    9. I really enjoy looking at eyes, wigs, and clothes for a doll that I don't have, but I haven't bought anything just because I have no idea when he will be available again to be purchased!

    10. I am doing it right now. I don't have any doll yet, and still I'm planning and buying clothes, wigs and eyes for them. I really like to spend time in bjd sites, they have so many cute things.

    11. I think it's a great idea, because as someone who has ordered multiple blank, nude dolls without getting them any accessories - it's kind of distressing, haha. I didn't think I would mind, but when my dolls have gotten home and sat there naked and totally incomplete for a period of time it bothers me so much! At least I had the sense to get wigs with both of them, so they weren't bald, and I did their face-ups pretty quickly. But having clothes and accessories ready for them is something I really value. I do make my own doll clothes sometimes, but I'm usually so busy, I really don't have the time. So I do like to order some wigs, eyes, clothes, etc. in advance if I'm totally sure I'm going to be ordering a doll to use them with. It's fun to be able to dress them up right out of the box.

    12. :3nodding:I have to admit that for the first time since starting in this hobby I ordered a suit for a doll I plan to buy. I have been looking at buying a resin soul gang for a while and.when I saw the suit it was what I had.been looking for. I am hoping to purchase the doll after Christmas. Fingers crossed it will fit him

    13. No, I don't see anything wrong with that at all. I usually start shopping for a doll when I commit to buying it or hit the buy button. I kinda like doing layaway cuz it gives me time to work on the character/look of the doll before they are home and naked wondering what is going on! :)

    14. i think committing to buying the doll is the key... i had 'commit' to a 'size' (form one company) and knew the clothing type I wanted so even having commision items made was not an issue... It was kinda fun having the dress ready and waiting for the head sculpt to show up (meaning for me to settle on one in particular)... I've had 2 like this... one is home and in said dress and I have outfits (yes plural) and more planned for a doll I am 100% getting when the right time allows XD I even have one wig lol

    15. Here's my experience about this topic. When I started in the hobby I thought it was a bad idea to order clothes and accessories before having the doll in my hands. I started to buy lots of dolls thinking I would get/craft stuff for them later. It was pretty disappointing receiving a beautiful doll and to have nothing to dress it or make it look more complete. It kinda killed my motivation to work on them. I was out of the hobby for about 2 years before stumbling onto pictures of Souldoll Junia.

I started, I admit a bit compulsively, to buy different clothes in her size category for her immediately and I'm having a blast! ^^ When she will be home, she will have lots of stuff to try and wear. Maybe some won't work but I feel really happy and inspired. I feel like I'm starting in the hobby again. ^^'

    16. Haha I bought an outfit specifically for a doll I wanted but didn't have. It was like I knew I was going to get her at base price at luckily I did a few months after I bought the outfit. I thank my lucky stars everyday for this. :)

    17. I did this before I got my first doll. I started buying clothing, a wig, eyes, etc even though I didn't have it yet. I'm doing the same now for my dolls on layaway. If I already have my doll somewhat planned out, why not start shopping for it? ^_^

I'd also rather have stuff for the doll before they get here, because I can just start dressing it up right away.

    18. I do this all the time. It's a risk, buying things without knowing your doll's exact measurements, but so far I haven't gotten bit yet. It's nice to have some things on hand once you finally do order the doll. Just be extra careful and mind the sizes of the items!

    19. I think this is the first time I won't have the proper basics already waiting for a doll LOL I think I'm short a blonde wig for the new girl coming O_o Feels weird

    20. Sometimes I buy little items for dolls I'm getting or want to get one day. This time I plan on having their wig, eyes and maybe a little outfit for them when they arrive. They also have a spot on my shelf with a little bed because I love making little rooms for my dolls. I think it great to have stuff already for them when they arrive!
