1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying Things For A Doll You Don't Have.

Jun 24, 2011

    1. I think buying stuff for a doll that you don't have yet is a wonderful idea. It helps begin the bonding process, I guess you could kind of compare it to nesting.
It really helps you get a feel for the doll and their character. Sometimes when we plan something, the doll can still change its mind and go a different direction, but having something for them to start in, kind of helps with their development. :D Or at least I think so.

When I was still getting familiar with the hobby, I didn't know that everything the doll needed was separate from the doll itself. So after ordering my nude doll with the included free company faceup and a random pair of eyes, I panicked and started looking everywhere for clothes, shoes and wigs. (Still had no idea about DoA or how to navigate the BJD world). :D :D Lol

Luckily for me, I knew a lot of people in my local community who helped me get familiar with everything... But one of the ladies in particular was exceptionally generous and let me come over and go through all her stuff. She offered me the opportunity to pick out two full outfits plus shoes and a wig so that my resin kid had some stuff to come home to. ^___^

Sadly the wig was too big for his small scale SD head, but I was surprised to find that the company had sent a random wig with him, and it fit perfectly. :D

Of course since then I have been able to educate myself. And I try to pay it forward where I can. I end up with a lot of extra stuff, as a lot of us tend to do in this hobby. And the things that don't sell, or aren't worth the hassle to try and sell, I offer to newbies with no strings attached, or offer them to those wanting to do a trade for another item or even a service. ^___^ :D

    2. As long as buying the items doesn't actually impede on your process of saving for the doll itself, there is no reason not to. If you're sure you will get the doll, then buying a wig, or some clothing, etc., is almost smarter than having the doll purchased and in the mail with nothing waiting for them once they arrive! Just don't go crazy and drain your bank account... then it's all for nothing. :sigh

    3. I'll start out by saying I'm absolutely guilty of this. I already have fabric set aside to use to make clothing for dolls that I'm still saving up for/ haven't even started saving up for yet but am just planning to get as soon as I can.
But as a lot of people have already said there's nothing wrong with getting some things for a doll you haven't gotten yet. I know when I get a doll I want to be sure to have at least a wig, eyes (if they don't come with any) and a complete outfit waiting for them when they arrive. I also want to make each of my dolls a hat and scarf in whatever their 'color scheme' is.
Currently I have a partially finished set of kimonos sitting on my sewing table that I'm working on for a doll that I'm still a few months away from ordering.
So yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with buying stuff for a doll you don't have yet. The planning and getting ready for them is part of the fun.

    4. This has been my life for the past month or so. I have a storage container filled to the brim with wigs, clothes, shoes, and eyes - and two fully-kitted-out dolls already. XD ...And five more floating heads. I even bought a Dollfie Dream outfit because it was a cosplay of Junko from Danganronpa, and I wasn't even planning on getting a Dollfie Dream. >__>||| Help me, somebody.

    5. I tend to buy everything at the same time, so the day I order the doll is the same day I buy clothes and such for them. The clothes and wig tend to come before the doll does so I use them to build up my anticipation for the doll itself. I've only bought a few clothes outright before the doll as I have a rule that I cannot get a new doll until the latest order arrives so I try to keep that to a minimum.

    6. I feel as though it can help motivate you to save money for your first doll, and can even inspire what sort of a sculpt you may want to choose for the doll's inspiration. I don't think it's a terrible idea at all!

    7. I love buying things for dolls, even dolls I don't have yet. I bought a dollheart set of clothes back in 2007 but I still don't have the doll I bought it for. I have a long list of characters I want to have and if I find something which suits these characters then I'll buy it (as long as my finances allows me to do this of course)

I don't think there is anything wrong in looking for things for a doll you don't have yet, its just as exciting as buying things for a doll you have, if not more as you can start bonding with the doll already (much as many other users have already said)

    8. One of my problems is buying things that I don't need now to use in the future, and it happens when I'm buying things to my dolls always. I met bjd's 4 (?) years ago and just now I decided to buy one for me and plan my next 3 dolls. I collect other kind of dolls, but since I discovered BJD's I'm buying accessories and some clothes to them that I also can use in my other dolls.

The only problem is that I don't know if the accessory or clothing will fit them, but if doesn't fit I will sell to another person ^^

    9. I plot allot and will buy things for a doll before I have it in particular or a type of doll size. Especially wigs, eyes and accessories but clothes too. Mybayer had a killer sell on clothes a couple of years ago so I packed up even though I still don't have a doll to wear them perfectly [other dolls have tried on and are wearing thing looking like vagabonds] Ic have already been scouring thrift shops for silks for up and coming dolls as well as putting together accessories and items for them. As I have collected dolls for a while I will always pick up some type of miniatures and items if they are on sale or I go berserk for them in the context and concept of having a doll that they could work with.

    10. another parallel with buying a puppy, lol - but here and there i'm in position where you better prepare in advance.
First of all, you never know if the thing you wanted to buy will be available when you finally buy your doll, and this can be disappointing.
If you are absolutely sure that you will have the doll, what is the problem with having some stuff for it? I'm already searching for eyes and hair because it's not easy to find those i want and don't see anything bad in it even if the stuff will wait for months.

    11. I bought clothes for my first doll before I got him. The only real problem with buying stuff for a doll you haven't ordered or gotten yet is you may not be familiar with its measurments, which you need. But that doesn't mean there's some unspoken rule that you don't buy clothes for a doll you don't have yet.

I've pre-ordered a doll that is likely going to take a year or so to get to me (dollshe, man. Oh boy.), and I am going to be taking that time to slowly get him clothes and stuff of his own because I don't want him to be cooped up naked in his box like my Husky was when I got him.

    12. I think its a pretty good idea, especially if the item is unique, you might never see it again! A couple years ago at a con I saw a hat for an SD I really liked but didn't have that big a doll at the time so didn't get it, majorly regretting it now lol

    13. If I can find a good deal on an item for a future doll, sure! I try to get things that will fit multiple sizes, if possible, such as furniture. Some coats and accessories can also fit multiple doll shapes/sizes so I look for those. Things like fitted bodices or pants, I would wait until I had the correct measurements.

    14. Five years ago when I first answered this, my advice was don't buy anything until you have the doll and are certain you'll use it. Oh, how times change! Just last week, I found an adorable shirt on etsy and bought it. It's a SD girl shirt, but my Iplehouse girl is too big to fit in it and it's the wrong style for my other SD girl. So....now I'm trying to decide what SD girl I need to get to wear that shirt. :wiggle

    15. lmao you fell into the Iple trap! ... These are the ONE 'certain' doll never to buy for unless you know in advance 100% confirmed it will fit LOL (proud owner of 12 of the hard to dress crew). This applies to all sizes of Iples XD lol

    16. I acquire a lot of doll clothes and accessories for dolls I don't have. That way, if I get a new doll or I want to do a photo shoot, I'm ready! I also like making things, so that makes clutter appear very easily haha. I honestly have things I'm sure I will never use, but I'm too afraid to sell them just in case I want them for something after all haha!

    17. If you are a doll person, who hasn't??? LOL I can say been there and done that way too many times. :)

    18. I always buy things for my dolls before I have them. I even purchased a beautiful SD16 sized dress set from Dollheart because I knew I would eventually get one and I did it was just 2 years later.

    19. Alice's Collection is an enabler for this - when you order $100 in accessories, the entire order ships free, so of course I HAD to buy some clothes and shoes and such for the SD girl I just ordered. :3nodding: At least everything will get here at the same time, so she won't have to wait to be dressed.

    20. I bought a SD sweater in 2010 and I'm only getting my very 1st SD in 2017. :XD:
I was kinda excited back then but totally no regrets.

As I am waiting for my new doll to come, I had already ordered a handful of clothing/shoes a few months ago.
The items are here but the doll is not here yet. :sweat
I'm just glad that my doll won't be naked when she gets home~ :kitty2

Well, it's all up to you my dear.
Your friends can say what they want.
If you find their comments making sense, you can follow.
If not, you can just go ahead with what you want to do.
Buying it way before you place an order for a doll can be a motivation.
But it will be better if you had studied the size and measurements of the doll you are looking forward to buy.
I did studied the measurements but I still made a silly mistake in not clicking the right size..
      1/8 bag for a 1/3... :? I guess I'll just give it to my 1/6 dolls... :doh
