It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Buying Things For A Doll You Don't Have.

Jun 24, 2011

    1. I totally purchased a wig for a doll I haven't even started buying yet, but to be fair it's PERFECT for him and was a limited release from Leekeworld, sooo... I'm still waiting on it to arrive, though. C:

    2. Yup guilty here :) I always buy clothing for a doll I do not have. But I know I will have that doll.

    3. I bought the wig for my first doll about 7 months before I actually bought the doll. The purchase was planned, though. And I bought the wig in Japan in store, and was about to leave the country - so I had no real choice on the matter :P

I'd say now, I purchase a doll and then while it's in production I am getting wig and clothes etc. ready...

    4. Buying clothes ahead of time is a sensible thing to do, since often the doll doesn't come with clothes and you don't want to have weeks to months waiting with a sad little bald naked eyeless doll for the accessories to come in. Especially with things going in and out of stock, group orders, shipping internationally, and of course marketplace chance finds where if you wait too long someone else might get it first, hunting and gathering for clothing you like can take a LONG time so it is good to get a head start on that. It's much more satisfying, in my experience, to greet your new doll with clothing, wigs, eyes and everything all ready to go.

That said, I'm suffering a very unsensible itch to buy doll clothes for a doll that not only I don't own... I don't even have plans to own! :sweat

You see lately I'm terribly tempted by gorgeous, beautiful girl clothes, yet I don't know if I even want to dress one of my boy dolls in girls' clothing and I am pretty sure right now there aren't any girl dolls I want desperately... I mean there are plenty that look very pretty to me but I've never super wanted a girl doll and it seems so backwards to buy a doll for the clothes, rather than clothes for a doll, lol.

Has anyone ever fallen in love first with clothes, and then bought a doll to fit the clothes?

(In my case I probably will buy one dress just to test it on my boy doll. I have a Glorydoll Louis who has a SD10-size body, so I think he fit into girl clothes. And his head sculpt is a unisex one, called Louis/Lucy, so technically he should be pretty-faced enough to pull it off. Hopefully that's good enough for me to have him crossdress once in a while, but I worry that once the clothes arrive my perfectionism will kick in and I'll seriously get hankering after a girl doll! Nooo, my wallet is crying....)

    5. So far it's only been wigs and eyes and a few clothes for a doll I had already bought but hadn't arrived yet. I don't know whether I would buy something for a doll I didn't even own or plan to own because it just seems a bit of a waste. I would only buy something if it would fit a doll I either have at home or have incoming because then I'd at least get to see it on a doll, even if it wasn't any of my dolls' existing styles.

    6. I do it all the time! Usually the eyes and wig mostly, however there have been some outfits that I know are for the character and end up getting bought.

    7. I usually wait until I have the doll on order, except in the case of YoSD clothes. I have a TON of YoSD clothes, and I do not currently, nor have ever had, a yoSD sized doll. I have all intentions of getting one someday, but when, I have no idea XD

    8. Rather than buying stuff for doll I want in the future I find patterns for them and make clothes. That usually is even more effective since I spent all that time and effort. That being said, I love to shop for my sister's dolls. She has one that looks really great in everything so I make and buy a lot for that doll...maybe even more so than my own.

    9. yep. I've got clothes, eyes, and a wig for a doll I don't yet own. I know I'm *going* to buy her so, um, I tell myself I'm planning for the future. :sweat

    10. I have purchased eyes and I'm looking for the perfect wig right now and I don't have her yet. Also looking at clothes to purchase or figure out how to make... It's soothing to do with such a long wait...

    11. One caveat: if you see an outfit you really like and a doll you really like and you order the outfit before the doll... it doesn't necessarily fit ;)
I suppose I can always sell it here though.

    12. I don't see anything wrong with buying things in advance for a doll you don't have, however for me I'm too fickle to do that. The dolls I plan to get change all the time, as do their measurements, so I would probably be stuck with a lot of useless doll stuff that my doll can't wear if I brought in advance.

    13. I would be a bit wary of buying clothing for a doll you don't own yet if you haven't got any other dolls to model it against. Sizing clothing can be quite tricky, and there's nothing worse than buying an item only to find it doesn't fit any dolls you own!

On the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with buying something for a doll you don't own yet if you are certain it will fit/suit them. For example, more than once I've bought Leekeworld wigs for dolls I have on layaway. I know the wigs will fit, because I own other dolls of the same brand and size, and I can't afford to wait until the doll they're intended for arrives because the wigs are only available for a limited time. I'd happily do the same with clothing, eyes or accessories for similar reasons - sometimes it's better to buy an items in advance rather than miss out and risk not being able to get the item once your doll does actually arrive.

    14. Heh. I do that all the time ... not with clothes and stuff since I don't buy those, but I've had a wig kicking around for more than a year that might end upon my incoming doll's head, and whenever I spot in-scale prop stuff I think an incoming doll might enjoy, I grab it. :) However, for that to happen the doll needs to be either ordered or an absolute must-have - or my entire place would be buried in doll stuff

    15. I'm actually collecting clothes and shoes for my doll to be, although I haven't decided yet which sculpt I will get. I just know that I want a little girl (16 cm)!

    16. I'm waiting on my first doll to arrive with no expectation of it being soon, and I quelled my impatience by doing some clothes shopping. It is a bit of a risk I guess, but since the measurements for most dolls are given on here and there are numerous "what fits" threads, I figure I'm safe enough! I am holding back on eyes though, since I'd want to measure his eye openings myself before ordering anything.

    17. Yes, I had outfits ready for my first BJD before she had arrived.

Also once I was looking through my Flickr and one of the people I followed had a few sets of an adorable hoodie + skirt outfit for sale, but for YoSD sized dolls which I didn't have. I bought an outfit even though I didn't have a doll that could fit it! I wasn't even planning to buy a Yo at the time. I still have that outfit now and it's still in it's packaging as I plan on selling my Soom girl...

    18. I don't plan on buying any clothes for my doll, so I'll be waiting to make her some until she arrives. But I've already bought her a set of eyes to replace what ever she arrives with, and a wig. Im already looking at a different wig as well, and I really want to get her shoes since I wont be making those. Other than that, I've also been making props, and looking at little doll sized things in stores around the area I work for stuff to pick up. So yeah, I definitely don't see why you shouldn't buy things before you have the doll as long as you're sure of it! It's part of the excitement while you wait for your doll to get here!

    19. I don't see any harm in purchasing a few things for a doll that you are saving up for, or that you have ordered. Like several people have said, it can be a good incentive to keep you focused on saving for your doll. It can also be a way of rewarding yourself for sticking to your goal. Pick an amount, like $25.00, $30.00, etc. Then, every time you've saved up that amount towards your doll, reward yourself with five or ten dollars that you can use to purchase underwear, a shirt, food props, or other small inexpensive items for that doll. You can also save the five or ten dollar rewards until you have enough to purchase something a little more expensive like a wig or an outfit.
If you prefer to wait until you've actually ordered, or have your doll, then just keep saving up those five or ten dollar rewards and you should have a tidy sum with which to start purchasing your new doll some nice clothes, shoes, and other things he/she will need. ^_^

Of course, if you find these lovelies to be as addictive as I have, then you may eventually find yourself just stocking up on various colors and sizes of wigs and eyes, and buying shoes and outfits just because you like them. Since you know that if it isn't snatched up by one of the rascals that is already home, there will be a new darling who arrives needing shoes, or who refuses to wear the wig they came with, or falls instantly in love with that cute punk rocker outfit! ^_~

    20. Hmmm, so strange of your friends. This is how I always do it. When the doll arrives then I have wigs, eyes etc. the only thing I haven't prepped for is my incoming Dryo because I wasn't sure if I am going to keep him/her.
I even bought a pukifee dress once because I liked it. Don't even own a pukifee, but knew someday I would.
