1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying Things For A Doll You Don't Have.

Jun 24, 2011

    1. I put myself on a doll ban so my collection wouldn't get out of control, but I bought some outfits, shoes, and a wig for a Tiny when all my dolls are SDs or larger. When that Tiny comes, he will have a whole wardrobe!

    2. I wouldn't buy clothes for a doll I hadn't ordered yet, as that can lead to bad habits. I would buy clothes for a doll I'm waiting to arrive, though.

    3. I have to agree with the majority here. I have purchased items for an incoming doll but not for ones i have planned in the future. I like to have clothes and other items ready for when the doll arrives so i can take pictures of them right away, i don't like them being naked after arrival lol I am currently waiting for a head to arrive and im already looking into purchasing eyes and a wig and clothes and hopefully a body soon. I dont want him to be bodyless for too long

    4. This thread is such an interesting read, since so many people have different approaches to buying and preparing for dolls. :3

Personally, I have bought things for dolls I didn't have, and then changed my mind on the sculpt/size later... but I wasn't really too put out by it. I did it back when I was first starting into dolls, and even just the feeling of the tiny clothes in my hands was enough motivation to push forward in working to get enough money for new dolls. These days, I'm a lot more definitive in my choices of sculpt etc, so I usually feel very confident in purchasing things for future dolls, since my tastes in sculpts and companies have settled, and the ones I want now aren't bound to change any time soon.

It's always a risk, of course, but so long as you've thought it through, do what you feel! Something tactile can be very powerful and motivating, and having something to hold and imagine your doll in or with can be a great way to remind yourself to save for a doll instead of spending extra money on other things. But like others have said, it might be good not to go too overboard, just in case. It's also probably good to remember that a few mismatched items isn't a contract - just because you change your mind later doesn't mean you should get a doll you aren't totally in love with. :)

    5. I buy clothes and accessories after I order a doll. I plan on most of my dolls beings SDs so I don't have to worry about buying an outfit and it not getting used. Just recently I ordered a new doll. His clothes have been arriving and he's not here so his big brother has been wearing them.

I think I would wait on buying clothes of different sizes though. I've been looking at smaller sized dolls and I'm still trying to decide if I really do want anything smaller. My plans can change very quickly so I would only buy things for dolls I've ordered or if I have the size already.

    6. I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to stuff I want eventually, and therefore need dolls to fit them. LOLOL.

While I don't own anything for a doll I don't have, I don't see why not. For one thing, it's your money. Your friends, parents, whoever ... don't get to dictate where your money goes. So pshaw. For another thing, if you plan on getting a doll to fit the stuff you're buying, then why not? I think it's weirder when people wait 6 months for a doll and when the doll shows up they don't have anything to dress them with.

    7. i think it's fine to buy things even if you don't have the doll. sometimes i see limited clothing i like for a future doll, so i buy it now and keep it away so i will have perfect outfit for my doll. i think sometimes it is good planning because it is better than getting a doll and have nothing for them at all!

    8. I bought clothes, wigs, eyes and accessories before I even ordered my first BJD!

    9. I don't think there was anything wrong with what you did, if anything that clothing could be giving you inspiration for a new character or something!

    10. I don't know that my dolls have things that I don't have. But I do know that I spend more money on doll clothes then I do on clothes for myself.

    11. I've been collecting all the inexpensive parts of my first doll for quite some time now! I started with a pair of socks and shoes from Etsy and then got a sweet little dress. I'm waiting for the lovely eyes I found to come in the mail right now and next is her wig! I'm getting all this in preparation for my future Pukifee Ante. I don't think it hurts to buy things for a doll you don't own yet! My reasoning is that I want to be able to play with her and make her look exactly how I want right away. I think it'd be less fun to receive my doll and then have to wait until I could afford the wig and eyes and outfit I'd like for her. I'd much rather have my accessories first and have her looking adorable immediately!

    12. i do buy clothes, wigs and shoes for a doll i don't have or not yet coming home, it's like preparing something and waiting the doll to come home, but sometime this causes problem if i am not familiar with the size of the new doll

    13. i would wait to buy anything for the dolls. If you buy something before the doll comes, it's the wrong size or doesn't fit right. You just wasted money.

    14. I actually really love collecting the clothes, regardless of whether or not I have a doll that fits it XD I admire the craftsmanship that goes into making the clothes, and to me it actually can sometimes become a little piece of art in it's own right XD I can't count how many items of clothing I've got all wrapped in tissue paper stored in boxes for dolls I'll probably never have :D

    15. I've bought stuff for dolls I don't have and I gotta say...it was a dumb idea. My taste changed and I have no doll to wear these things. The only problem is, these items were not cheap and I love them too much to sell them. So they're still sitting in boxes...waiting for the day when I change my mind or for the day I decide to frame them (they were DollHeart outfits, mind).

I won't say anything for clothes and such...but wigs and eyes. It really is a trial and error thing. Sometimes, the doll just looks so right with a particular eye color and wrong in the original color you had planned for them. And wigs? Ah....wigs. The pictures look great, but when it's time to put it on your doll's head, it either stays on, or it doesn't. The head size is wrong or the ears get in the way. People know what I'm talking about. So it's impossible not to accumulate a mass of eyes and wigs.

    16. If I did that... I'd have so many yosd sized props >>' and wigs and clothes and everything. But I don't have any yosd. And I'm not planning to ever get one, it's just that 1/6 scale things are too cute to handle!

    17. I have a Lady Amalthea BJD on layaway. I am making the final payment in the beginning of June and then she will be shipped out to me. Since she is barefoot I went ahead and purchased her some flats that match her dress. Nothing wrong buying things for a doll that is on layaway, that you have already purchased and waiting to be shipped, had been shipped. I wouldn't buy items if I wasn't 100 percent certain I was going to get the doll.

    18. I have been buying jewellery cupboards, chairs, a old fashioned school table, mini washing basket, old barbie furniture and mini post box that looks to be in scale for a littlefee (who I've just ordered) for the past two years as motivation to get a small doll to use my miniatures on.

    19. If I allow myself to buy stuff for maybe-dolls, I'll lose my house and become a homeless hoarder. Although I do save every idea and pattern I come across that I love. Incoming dolls I do make purchases for, otherwise I'd have nothing for them to wear.

    20. I do this all the time for dolls on the way, or future purchases. I've found it better to buy things when I find them, rather than go back later.
