Buying your second BJD

May 4, 2009

    1. I was ready to settle with just one, actually. I loved having Jay, plus I wasn't sure my fiance would even let me get a second one.

Almost 6 months after I got Jay, Fairyland released the LittleFees and I just fell hard for Ante. Asked my fiance, and he said I could get her fullset as a Christmas present if I went in for half. Done.

He knows I want one more, and which one it is, so I guess he's getting used to it. Wasn't expecting to want another one.. XD

    2. It's always the right time to buy another doll. One is lonely! Two isn't much of a party, three isn't enough for cards, and after 4 you are doomed anyway, so go for it.

    3. I think it really does just matter on the person, and which doll grabs your attention. I only had Iris for a couple of months before I decided to invest in a "practice head" for faceups. I ended up finding a great bargain on a Juri06. And sure enough, not long afterward the "practice head" went and got himself a personality.

Doyle actually remained a floating head for a good several months after that (and until after another full doll purchase or two).

I've never regretted buying a second (or third, or fourth, etc) doll. Iris is still my very first and my spoiled favorite. As for length of time between dolls... it varies. It depends on a lot of factors, but mostly finances. When I have the money in my budget for a new doll, I'll purchase the next one. Sometimes that's just after saving for a while, sometimes it's a tax refund or Christmas gift money. Other times, it's money I make from doll-related sales (doll jewelry I've made, faceup commissions, etc). It seems to average out to about one doll every three months or so, though. I think I'm going to give it a rest for a while now though, so I can finish "perfecting" the crew I have before adding more. ^_^ I think I'm beginning to hit dollie critical mass! :sweat

    4. This has really cheered me up because I was worried about having more than two dolls. But your plan makes me realize that none of my dolls will have to be lonely now if I'm busy doing a photoshoot or making clothes for one of them. :3

My first doll is still on its way but he's just a fat little head for now. I'm already slowly saving for my second because I want this character to carry around my first doll's head like a teddy bear. I'm so bad. XD

Plus I'm already dreaming about my third doll, someone very special. ^^

    5. my wish was to get as my first doll a 70 cm or more. so i was browsing to find one that i liked.
i found souldoll and my first wish was for chiron (for me is the best face of 70 cm doll i've seen until now) but was sold out so i got upset. :x
so, browsing browsing and looking around my attention was caught by one doll, Waltz, so cute face as my tastes and i liked, but was "only" 60 cm and this doll still was not for sale. i was like "..hummm i could put on him 10 cm heels shoes..but then he would look weirdo.." so i got upset twice.
two day later (call it fate?) is funny because i wanted to check my mail but my mouse slipped on the wrong url in my favorites . there was the page with a big pic of waltz, and he was now for sale. so i was like "omfg. here you are..you really want i buy you, huh.." i lost the battle with his cuteness and i bought asap. :sweat
so now, im waiting him, he's still shipping somewhere, but i've got notice that souldoll will put chiron again for sale soon, so.. if in the meanwhile im not able to find some other big doll that i like, i think chiron will be my second doll. :doh

    6. I decided when I start drooling over male bjd's. Even though I have more fun dressing female bjd's, having male bjd's for me is a exciting experience. Year Ago I fell in love with "Gena" sculpt....but being that I want male bjd and I know Soom wont make a boy. I bought Gena head and a male body for cheaper on another site. :3 So you see, one must think through what type of bjd they look for, size, price and how much you like. It took me 4-5 months after I receive first bjd to decide...HEY, I want to get a boy...and now. Though my next one I aiming for 70cm :3

    7. I wanted my girl to have a boyfriend =3

    8. There was no thinking of, should I get one, it was a I will get a second one, lol. :)

    9. I ordered my first doll at the very end of March. She's a five-month layaway, so she'll be paid off in July. She probably won't ship until August/September, with Soom's shipping delays of late.

... I've already got plans for my next three dolls (all Pipos - I want a grey Bao, Cheshire and Dali). I'm in the process of selling my Wii right now so that I can afford at least one of them.

So my 'second' doll is probably going to get here before my 'first' :sweat

I was originally planning on only getting one doll, but then I stumbled onto the Pipos site... now I need those three, as they are all characters from the same story as my Cuprit. I'm awful at denying characters, so now that they've made a space in my head, I just have to get them :sweat

    10. I was crazy but I ordered my second right along with my first. I can't stand to have just one doll of any type as they seem so lonely.

    11. My first doll, Toshi has been with me for a year and 5 months. I've been planing to buy another one since he arrived, but it took a long time to decede what doll and what character. After more than 5 versions I finally manged to find the perfect doll for my favorite character, the only problem now is to save the mone...
Maybe I'll order him before for my birthday...[wishful thinking]

    12. I ordered my first boy in October, and by December I still hadn't received him yet but KNEW I wanted a second, an older brother to the first. <3 A second doll so the first wouldn't be lonesome! Unfortunately, I just wasn't bonding with my second doll to the same level I felt for the first, and I realized he was just the wrong sculpt for the character... ;_; I plan to reshell him though into a different sculpt. My boy WILL have his big brother! ;w;

      So my second doll could now be counted as...two floating heads? xD;;;

    13. I bought my first doll a year ago, and was fine with just having one for a while. Since he was a boy, I eventually started getting jealous of people with girl dolls, and bought my girl doll this january. I don't think I will buy any more dolls for awhile, because I am content with mine.
I don't feel guilty for buying a second, and think one should buy as many as one truly wants. I only wanted a few, but someone else may want an entire family. I think it's all up to the person! :)

    14. Hee, me too! A doll family of one just sounded so lonely and sad to me - what would the poor boy do while I was at work? Just sit by himself and be bored? lmao!

    15. I ordered my first doll in September, my second in January, my third in February and I ordered my fourth on Monday lol

my reasoning, I loved the molds and now is the time to buy as very soon I won't be able too. That and they help me with my art, especially my first doll :)
I have no regrets, love them all, fab works of art :)

    16. I got my first doll yesterday and I already know he'll get a friend sometime soon^^ It's a matter of "when", not "if".

    17. Mine was about a year after I bought my first. I sold the flat that had become a millstone around my neck since I had moved out of it and moved in with my partner and promised myself some mad money for new dolls once the sale went through.

I had origially wanted and elf doll when I got my first BJD, but elf Shiwoo was sold out (and certainly not available on the secondary market for the money I had at the time) so I got my Chiwoo boy, confident he would be my only BJD... then started thinking that I really should gt a girl too, and I saw a photo of the lovely RML R20J head with the two sets of elf ears as well as a set of human ears, and found a link to a US rep for RML, who would paint and organize a body and eyes and wig for the doll and put it all together for me (in those days, I had no confidence in doing it myself).

It took many months for my elf-girl to get to me, however, because (once she had been painted, allt he pices acquired and assembled, she was sent to a friend in the US who passed her to another (English) friend at a FilkConvention, who brought her back to the UK and passed her to another firend who brought her to a 15th Cnetury re-enactent re-enactment to pass her on to me... adn in the menatime, I'd seen another elf, and used ther last of my mad money from the flat sale to get a Custom House Petite Ai Raphael on e-bay.

By which point my resolve to only have one, two at most, was out the window. I was hopelessly lost and already saving for more BJD's

    18. @Teddy mad money! :D sounds like a lot of fun.

When I got serious about the hobby, I knew I wasn never going to have just one. I wanted - at least one each: an SD-sized girl, an SD-sized boy, a mini boy, a mini girl, a teeny boy and a teeny girl. :)

Like with my first, I wanted to wait until I'd found a doll that grabbed me... and I also wanted it to be a "from the ground up" doll... that is, blank head that I'd face-up myself, maybe a hybrid doll that I'd get to work on to make it fit together... this sort of thing.

The hardest thing was finding a doll that I really liked, and would fit the character I had in mind for it, AND would look alright alongside Lily's massive Moon of Doom-size head and general cute features. In the end I picked out Soom Namu... whose features are like the opposite of the DG Noella mold: shallower eyes, the Soom mouth, that wonderful squishable Namu nose, and an actual brow. I stopped caring about how they'd look together... and to my surprise, they actually look very sweet next to one another. The features of one highlights the other, as they are rather extreme in their differences. Unfortunately Jack is still bodiless, as I had a surprise doll-incoming in the form of Edward (never thought that one would really happen!). Jack is definitely my main priority now :chocoheart Gotta get better at face-ups...

As for time periods... I waited until my first doll was more or less clothed, shod, wigged and eyed in colours and a style that I basically liked, until I went about getting Number Two. Lily is still not "finished"... but I've come to the realisation that I don't think I'll ever consider a doll of mine finished, so... more dolls it is! :D Wuahaha. I definitely believe in fully bonding with a doll before I think of getting another one. The bonding process is something I really enjoy and really need with my dolls... I guess it can take months, really.

I've found it to be so fun with more dolls around. I really liked just having Lily as a single dolly, but I'm enjoying my expanding resin family :D

      Argh, I love dolls. :chocoheart

    19. I ordered my first BJD (a DoC Si) in July 2007. In early September he arrived :) In August, I had already made the decision to buy my second, but hadn't been able to get the one I'd had my eye on (stupid Paypal!! Grrrr D<) so around the end of November I bought my second (an AS Vera) direct from the site (I was gonna get her second hand to begin with) and she arrived about... end of January? It was after all the snows ended in China, I know that at least :) By this time, my third had already arrived from Korea! Since I bought him from eBay and he didn't need casting time, so he arrived about a fortnight after I paid for him :XD:

So I don't think there's really any time limit in getting your second (or more!) - if you find one you love then you should just go for it if you can afford it :)

    20. I bought my first and second dolls almost at the same time. The Camine got here first, but had no face-up although I had ordered him with one. My IH Lion was stuck in customs for ages while we figured out the paperwork - and fees :o

Then another Camine arrived, this one with a face up :D So, the first Camine went back to DOD, IH Lion was ransomed out of customs and I finally had my two boys. I probably made a bit more fuss over the Lion because he had his sexy uniform, but I loved them both equally.

I have never regretted getting my Camine, and he's still my favourite of all my boys.
