Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Can anyone tell the difference of each company‘s doll?

Oct 15, 2021

    1. I know Resinsoul had their ‚signature‘ prominent nose, if you can call it that. Other than that, can anyone really tell which company a doll is from by looking at them?

    2. Absolutely. If you look at enough of a company's sculpts long enough you can pick them out fairly easily. I could probably pick out any bluefairy doll out of a crowd. Another good example is Unoa because Gentaro Araki's style shines through every doll he makes. If you look at all the dolls he's made you can really see the similarities. The style between specific dolls in a company is usually not that different given they're made by the same sculptor or sculptor team.

    3. Yes, and no. If it's a company I'm interested in or have owned a few of their dolls, I can usually tell not only company, but often sculpt too. I think many companies do have distinctive looks about them, for example, I feel like I could pick out any Migidoll. But I only collect SD size dolls, and I feel that scale has a lot of diversity in sculpts. YoSD child dolls mostly look alike to me, with their round faces, big eyes and tiny mouth and nose and basic child bodies. It might just be because I'm not interested in child dolls, but so many of them look the same to me.

    4. I can identify a Maskcat from across a room or a blurry photo. Lol. To me they have a very distinct feel and look, as do Ateliar Momoni's. I have gotten better at identifying dolls from other brands that I own after handling the dolls or looking at their products long enough. And of course, some dolls, like those from DreamHigh Studios, are so unique that one can identify them relatively quickly if they spend some time looking over them. As previous poster said, certain brands or artists have 'styles' that can be picked up on if you get to 'know them enough.

    5. Depends on the company, for me. Certain companies just have a 'look' about them that makes them easier to spot. Couldn't tell you all the cues I use for them though, I just kinda know them, haha.

    6. I can for most older companies (have been around for a while now), and I used to be able to recognize bodies as well. Now with so many different companies it is a bit harder, mostly because I have very little interest in getting more BJD, with the exception of mature tinies, which I have managed to not get (at least so far) a single one. Most artists have a signature style and most from what I have read, learn from the same "school," like Limhwa and Narin artists (I can't recall where I read this, and it was a while ago so I might be confusing one or both), so their style is similar but still you can tell they are from two different artists. (:

    7. I can usually identify that any random doll is by a certain company if I am familiar with the company. Or I get close, narrowing it down to sister companies. Now, people have varying levels of face blindness, so if you look at photos of dolls a lot but don't recognize them easily it could be a bit of that. But for me it's like any arty form. Different artists have different visual styles, even when it can be more subtle.

    8. I've been in the hobby for about a year now and I think I can definitely spot certain company's dolls! Like others have said, most of them have one or a few artists who sculpt them, so their style becomes a lot more obvious the more you look at their work.

    9. I think I can tell if a doll is from one of the popular companies and I can tell dolls from different companies apart, but I can't really pinpoint the exact sculpt. All I can tell is 'that's a doll from xx company' but most of the time I can't narrow it down to which sculpt.

And I can't tell the bodies from different companies apart as I don't really pay attention to the bodies... I guess it's because I'm in general more interested in the head than the body. As long as the body can sit and stand and do simple poses, that's enough for me.

    10. Like some others, I can tell if a doll is from a companie I'm interested in and name the sculpt. But from companies I've no interest in, I may guess the companie but I will mistake more than once. And certainly not finding the sculpt

    11. If I’ve owned a sculpt before, I have no problems identifying it from then onwards. And some different artists/companies definitely have a distinct style that’s easy for me to pin point, though I couldn’t tell you exactly what those identifying features are exactly.

for example I always know a Fairyland doll when I see one, and if it’s a Minifee, I can almost always tell you which sculpt it is, save for a few of the oldest sculpts, because I’ve owned them at some point. :sweat

it’s always funny to me when people say they all look the same, because they’re so familiar to me at this point, that they all look very distinct from each other.

Dolls I have no experience with, though? They all look the same. Like Smart Dolls or Switch boys. I cannot tell any of them apart. They all look the same to me.

    12. I can recognize quite a few companies by style, but I cannot always guess the specific mold.
Like Switch dolls have a distinct look, but I don't know their names. Fairyland has too many to name them as well, especially because I only see them in passing most of the time (I can recognize many of the older sculpts though, especially the ones Luts sold as well). Volks, Iplehouse, Unoa etc. are all easy to pick out in a crowd. But I've been in the hobby for a while now :XD:

I'm very lost though when it comes to YoSD sized dolls and those female fashion scale ones. I just feel like they all follow pretty much the same aesthetic even across several artists.

    13. Some... some I can. Because they have a distinct style.
Blue fairy you can usually pick out but there's a couple of smaller companies who do similar dolls. Doll Chateau has a distinctive look too. Dream Valley I can ID usually again though, this is mostly down to their unusual proportions. Impldoll usually have really high foreheads, that's something i've noticed about them lol. If I see a head and think "damn that's a lot of forehead" then it's probably an Impldoll ahahahaha. Is that mean?
I could probably id a doll leaves head too. Or Doll In Mind.

But for a fair few unless I recognise the specific sculpt i'm gonna struggle. I can tell "oh that's a minifee" based on recognising the body more than the face for example. And I can id most resinsoul msds by name for some reason. lol.

    14. One can be a 'newbie' in this hobby for a very long time, I suspect. I test myself looking at doll profiles, my personal guess-that-sculpt game. Am I any good at it yet? Meh. It's fun when I get it right though!

    15. In some cases yes. Some are verty distinct in their style. Often some are more cartoony and others lean toward more realistic. Soem are in the middle. But i can usually only tell between the brands i have myself ^^;

    16. I know some companies pretty well. I can tell a Luts Doll from a mile away, and know several of the kid delf sculpts on sight. I once got invited to a doll owners' tea party that was supposed to be limited to people with dolls currently on their person (I was not local and mine were all home, this was at an anime convention) because I recognized the Bory one of the organizers carried xD

I can also usually tell Fairyland, Iplehouse, Dream of Doll, and Soom. But probably because I own dolls from them so I've spent considerable time staring at them.

    17. When I first got into BJDs, I had nooo clue how people could identify between companies so easily. A lot of the sculpts tended to blend together. But now I can easily identify a few brands on sights just by the style - though there are some popular companies I don't pay attention to, and haven't developed an eye for identifying yet. Off the top of my head, I can pretty much always tell if it's Luts, Volks, Fairyland, Switch, Ringdoll (the boys all have this certain potato-y quality...), Maskcat, and Little Monica.

    18. Yes most of the time. Blank dolls might make it a bit more challenging.
I think it becomes easy to you once you've owned or just familiarized yourself with photos after photos of each company doll. Lol... I think. :p

    19. I can recognize some dolls by company, since certain companies have their own "look". For instance, I can usually recognize Myou Dolls, Luts, or Switch dolls. Not always, but most of the time I can guess pretty accurately

    20. I can sometimes identify which company/artist a specific doll was made by, or recognize that a doll is a sculpt I've seen before, even if I can't remember who made them. It's kind of funny because I'm pretty face-blind when it comes to real people. I think that seeing the blank head (or multiple different styles/faceups of the same doll in a short period of time) helps a lot, because I tend to memorize people's hair, clothes and/or makeup instead of their actual facial features (or just not memorize a single thing about them, honestly).
