Can Body Blushing Go Too Far?

Oct 30, 2011

    1. I think it can be "too much" when the doll looks like it has makeup caked all over, but I don' think it is going "too far" to blush all over. It looks weird to partially blush but skip a part. ANY part.

Personally, I don't think any part of the body is any "worse" than any other part. Grow up. lol

    2. I don't see anything wrong with blushing the whole doll. I think there's only a too far from maybe the standpoint of using too much of a color and making them look sunburned or something when one does not intend to.

I personally don't do full-body blushing since all my dolls are almost perpetually in a state of Victorian modesty and it's just too much of a hassle to re-blush parts that rub off if no one is going to see them anyway. And since I've never done it before, it will probably drive me batty if it doesn't look right.

    3. We're actually discussing whether or not it's 'wrong' for someone to do up their doll the way they want to do it?

No, it's not wrong. This is the part where I stick up for the artist, though -- it's equally not wrong for the artist to refuse to blush particular areas, because it's their work; therefore they have some say in what gets blushed and what doesn't. There are any number of reasons for that; maybe they have a moral or religious objection, maybe they just don't think it'll come out right with the way they do their work, whatever. Regardless of what it is, their wishes need to be respected and honored just as much as the commissioner's. It's not hard to find an artist who'll do it; there are plenty of commissionable faceup artists on the board and I am absolutely positive there are at least a handful who'd do the whole kit and caboodle.

I am not so into body blushing on my own dolls, beyond nice little manicures and pedicures -- but my reasoning behind that is more that I don't want to maintain it. I am fundamentally lazy, and my dolls are totally covered for the most part, so why maintain something if nobody's gonna see it anyway? Works for me.

With regards to 'too much' blushing -- I look at it the same way I look at inexpert faceups. You live, you learn. The only possible time it could be 'going too far' is if you're (general you is in effect) paying for it to be done and it comes out much much more intense than you wanted (say you asked for subtle muscle definition and got a doll so orange it could give bodybuilders a run for their money). In that case, as money is involved, it's too far. In any other situation? Owner's choice. If they're happy, we have no right to judge.

Not that we ever do anyway.

    4. I second that. I mean yes, it's your doll and you can do whatever you want with it but hey, I've objective seen "horrible" blushes out here and there and the doll really seemed to have stood under the sun for weeks or something like that <.<

Always do things with reason and everything will be better ;) Too much of every thing always hurts, it applies to every thing in life...

    5. I would normally agree with you on the partially blushing looking weird, but I just blushed a doll blue and really couldn't be bothered blushing where she would be wearing clothes xD So yeah, it looks weird, but I'll live ;)

On the subject, I love it when someone has realistically blushed a doll. Most adults have pubic hair, so why not give it to your doll? We don't have nearly enough hairy dolls (chest, arms, legs etc).
But I'm not a fan of blush that is caked on, defeating the purpose of blushing in the first place (if it was for a more natural look).

    6. I'm personally a big fan of body blushing,my soft spot for the body blushing is justified by the fact that the body looks better, more realistic and also i do not like the full head face upped to match with a blank bodies, imo the body blushing enhances as well the sculpt of the body ( i do own a fully blushed DZ Hong and belive if i say that most people initially doesn't even recognize as DZ Hing my bjd because of the fully blushing) so why not?
Surely an artist has the right to refuse to do or don't in certain area the body blushing, but i decided to try by myself cause too many time artits tends to do not offer a full body blushing,at very least they offer mani and pedi or just torso and back blushing, that to me is not enought, and just for the difficulty to find and artist that please my high expectations then i decide to try by myself.
So definitely a blushing can go far as long as the owner wants.

Just to give some reference i've ordered my IDealian Hyperon and i do bought as well soom body blushing,it's nothing so realisting in the private are,i do call it manhood, but it's just a merely shadow onto the pubic hair area, just look here :)

    7. I think "too much" body blushing is when it's not natural looking. But if a sculpt asks for it, go ahead! I don't really like "hairy" dolls that much since all of my dolls are little kids, but for "adult" dolls whos character calls for body hair it seems reasonable enough.

From the artist's point of view I think it's also reasonable to refuse to do stuff you are either not familiar or comfortable with. I'm pretty sure there are artists out there who would just do any kind of blushing, but there are cetainly others who will not.

So can body blushing go too far? yes. But only if it then looks unnatural or cakey. :)

    8. It's your doll. It's your choice. What you want to do with it is nobody elses business. With that said, when you think of reselling your doll the buyer has to option to buy or not what you offer. If they don't like the blushing you did for sure there are others who will still buy it but if that doesn't happen, since it's just a blush you can easily offer to remove it to suit the buyers taste. Just like I do not like beards or mustache on my dolls but that doesn't mean I am bothered to see them on others. I just shrug and find one that does have a cleaner face.
Again, for me personally I like the full blush on since it makes it look more real. Infact that blush will make me want and pay more for the doll since I know the seller paid to have the blush on.

    9. I do like body blushed dolls and I have a couple of them but most of mine are unblushed. And I think it's entirely up to the owner to do what they want with their dolls and do whatever makes them happy. It may not always be something that I think looks good but it's not up to me! I once saw a doll with white skin that had been given a very pink body blush and I though it was just way too vivid of a pink to look natural but it wasn't my doll and her owner was happy with it so that is all that matters.

    10. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?
I don't see any problem with brushing everything, even putting aside the issue of 'your doll, your choice'. The only time I've seen body blushing that bothered me at all has been when it's a weird colour, like hot pink blushing on a normal skin doll (yes, I know the doll has 'pink' skin, but it's not that pink!)

Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?
I think it can certainly enhance the beauty of a doll, if done with sufficient skill. For me personally though, I'm neutral on the issue so I never bother - I see no point in spending money or time on something that I'm not desperate for, especially when it's in danger of chipping off a lot faster than a faceup. I wouldn't be prepared to pay extra for a blushed doll, and I'd rather buy one without.

    11. Okay first off, when I first read this, it made me think of a body blushing tutorial on Youtube that was specifically the blushing of a hip part, so it was the boy bits and behind.

To answer your question: unless the blushing is not the well done, I think it enhances the overall look of the doll. It kinda of brings more... life to them, I guess. But you choose where you want to blush your doll and where you don't. I don't really think blushing can really go "too far" in a general sense. It's all about perception.

    12. I've always thought that full body blushing, when done well, can look really amazing. I've even done it to one of my own dolls, and SSDF which is about the same size/maturity as and EID. I soon found, however, that unless a doll gets little or no play time, the MSC and blushing begins to chip at the joints where the resin rubs together. The chips detracted from the blushing, making it just look messy. Generally, when I do body blushing for other people I don't recommend doing the legs at all, or the arms unless they have veining. But then my dolls get a lot of play time, so someone else's experiances may differ.

As far as the artist refusing to do a particular part? Well, as an artist myself, I can tell you that if the person is not only disinterested but objecting to blushing or painting a particular thing, they are not likely to do a good job on it. It really shows in the quality of workmanship and attention to detail when an artist enjoys what they do, as well as when they do not.

      So, while I don't think it's wrong, I don't think it's right for everyone, either. :)

    13. I love the look of well done body blushing, especially veining on hands, arms, etc.

However... I really don't want to deal with the upkeep. ): So the only dolls I have with blushing are my two MNF with scar arms/hands.

    14. I see no issue of real right or wrong. The doll can't be offended or traumatized, after all! It's up to what the owner wishes, although of course the artist should not be asked to do things she finds uncomfortable. I would feel weird doing pubic blushing personally.

Full blushing would not add value for me. If I were buying secondhand and had the choice between a blushed and unblushed doll of the same sculpt I'd probably go with the unblushed because it would save the hassle of removing the blushing once it started to go; I would not pay either more or less for a blushed doll. I've never owned a doll with a blushed body and I don't have plans to, although some might get sealed in places to get tattoos in the future. A subtle, skillful body blushing looks nice, but in many cases it looks garish IMO. And I definitely want to regularly change clothes and play, so body blushing and I have never been very compatible :sweat.

    15. I live by this rule.... if it looks like my doll got left in the tanning bed for two hours too long... I have gone too far.

but in all seriousness. for me its more about if it adds or detracts I hate the look of chipped blushing, and since most of my dolls are played with alot I dont' blush much except on the hands .

    16. I do not believe full body blushing itself is wrong and in a lot of cases they have even turned out quite beautiful. But it CAN go wrong imo, as I have seen a young looking sculpt (like def under 18 looking, to me as 14 yrs) with FULL blushing. And it came across as wrong to me because it also had a makeshift beard on. But the sculpt itself looked so young that it seemed like a kid just playing pretend.

It did not help that the blushing was SUPER detailed...in any case, I am a full supporter of Body Blushing and if a doll has body blushing it would not take away its value. But I don't want to see any doll's bits, male or female, when they are blushed to hyper realism..

It really depends on the doll's sculpt/faceup. T_T

    17. Blushing is generally a good thing but there are mind blowing extremes. I don't really go there.

I do understand the artist's reluctance to go there, however. I have an EID guy and I have not yet painted him for two reasons. First, he's my first tanned doll, so it's a totally different color palette for me. Second, I've only painted females and children so far, and I want to maintain his intimidating masculinity. Do I suggest body hair with pastels or take a bigger risk and try to paint fine hairs? Just leave him Ken doll manscaped? Do I paint the groin region, even though it will never be photographed and I will be teased by my husband? I've drawn a lot of human anatomy and nude models, but it feels different when it's in 3D.

    18. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?
I don't see anything wrong with that.
Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?

If done right the blushing can
      1. add more depth to the doll's body and let it look more realistic,
      2. be easily removed and thus won't harm the doll.

    19. Aw hehe ^^ Glad you like him! You're right, he doesn't wear many clothes... well, you try dressing a seal up in people-clothes! Sometimes the dark tip of his peeny is slightly visible under his pants, but I don't really mind. He's on a JDF body which have mahoosive organs anyway!

    20. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?

Absolutely not wrong. It's your doll - go wild! The "too far" clause is only an issue when one may want to display his wildly blushed doll on a public forum that has rules the said blushing would violate. Otherwise, I cannot imagine any type of blushing going too far for one's own personal enjoyment and collection.

Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?

It depends. If blushing is done well and to my taste, it will enhance the beauty of the doll in my eyes and I'd be willing to pay a higher price for the said doll. However, if the blushing is absolutely not to my liking, I'd want to pay less because I'd be facing the hassle of removing it all once the doll comes home. Of course, any type of blushing, good or bad, that is applied improperly and caused discoloration of the resin, would most certainly bring down the value of the doll to me.

As far as the artist's refusal to do certain type of work, I agree with others - it's ultimately the artist's choice as far as what commission she/he accepts. There may be a multitude of reasons why someone may not wish to work on certain type of blushing, and that's perfectly fine. There are so many wonderfully talented people out there that I'm sure you'll be able to find an artist who will be happy to work on your doll according to all your specifications :)
