Can Body Blushing Go Too Far?

Oct 30, 2011

    1. Personally, anything beyond blushing the nipples, around the navel, the contours of the abdomen and decolatage, and between toes and fingers is too much. Though really, even all that I just listed, is unnecessary, because do you intend on keeping your doll naked all the time? Or is detail really that important to you even when you don't see it? I've seen plenty of body blush jobs, and kudos to the artists, but I haven't seen very many that are NOT tacky, especially ones that have a hairy bear chest and curly q pubes.

    2. LOL. Cyclothymia: I wish I could leave my doll naked all the time just because I like the way body blushing looks.

The person who taught me how to body blush does the instep on the bottom of her dolls' feet. I do it that way, too. Sure, nobody will ever see that, but it's sort of a completionist thing. The entire doll is blushed beautifully (anything less feels incomplete). That's a nice feeling.

    3. What's so yucky about it? Us real persons, we look like that, too. And it's totally unnecessary for us, too, to have all those "details" cos few people ever get to see them all, really... If a doll looks realistic enough to "pull it off" and if the artist does a great job - why not? I don't need it on mine (though I might try as I get better at blushing) but I certainly can appreciate the craftsmanship. Art imitates life. A doll imitates life. I don't see how a doll with full, realistic body-blushing would come across as "odd" or "yucky" when statues of naked people or drawings/paintings of naked people are considered high art (think Michelangelo's David, for example, or the "Birth of Venus" painting).

    4. I guess she was just embarressed xD

I don't think it can go to far, it's true that perhaps you will never see it, but it can look really nice I am a fan of japanese dolls (other than bjd), and it can be quite common for them to have private parts etc. so I think it's fine! And as Khell said, this isn't something new within dolls, dolls are just a form of art/expression. My only problem with it is that it can scratch really easily and start to look tacky....

    5. I don't understand how it could be *wrong*. :?

No part of human anatomy is evil. And so how could something that represents it be?

(none of my dolls have any body blushing btw)

    6. I dont like body blushing. If i need to wipe the doll down i'd be to afraid of removing the blushing. I know there are ways to avoid that, but id rather not worry about it.

    7. I think if it is beautiful, nothing can be 'too far'. There is no 'too far' for beauty.

    8. I request nipple blushing (and full body blushing if available) for all my dolls. Simply because I saw how well done and beautiful it can be on my dolls. I don't like when my dolls look like cheap plastic (for the same reason I'm getting them coated in MSC, so they shine less). Also, the reason I request nipple blushing is because some of my boys have transparent shirts, it will look weird if it's not blushed.

I dunno why some people think it's icky or weird. o.o

    9. For me, i dont see the need to waste money or time on it.
It's not needed for me to enjoy my doll.
They look real enough to me as it,
i kind of like the aspect that they are still retaining some of their doll-ness

But if i ever did get body blushing, it would probably just be for hands and upper torso.

    10. it really depends, i've seen some body blushing that looks like the doll has been dipped in mud instead....when i bought my first doll i requested make up but not body blushing because i didn't like the way it looked on that particular mold, perhaps because of the colors they used. some companies manage to do a beautiful job though that actually resembles skin, i love the body blushing on soom ID dolls, i can't resist the bluish tones they give to the veins and the way they paint the hands and nails, i think it's just gorgeous!!! so when i ordered my two dolls i requested body blushing on both

    11. I like body blushing- it brings a doll to life. However I do agree with some members here that you almost (well i) would rather then they stay nude so you can appreciate the blushing/ artistry.

With body blushing on the doll becomes so fragile to handle, should you accidentally scrape off a chunk of nipple or wear away the knees! I have enough trouble putting wigs on without scratching the face up !

    12. I also think that there is no "too far", it's all up to the owner's preference. I think the face is the most important part so in my opinion subtle body blushing that complements the face would work better rather than having it much more detailed than the face. If the doll is always going to be fully clothed I could see only blushing the parts that would show, like just the arms and legs.

I don't think it would detract from the value unless it was done poorly and/or with incorrect materials. A really well done blushing would probably add value to the doll.

I can also understand the artist not wishing to do genital blushing. Many of us grew up in prudish cultures and it can be hard to overcome that. I was raised in Saudi Arabia, which is even more prudish than the USA! For me, a few life drawing classes has mostly cured me of it but I admit I'll probably feel a bit uncomfortable at first when blushing those areas (I plan to learn how to do face ups and body blushing).
I think it would look strange and draw attention to the unblushed parts if the entire body was carefully blushed except that one area!

    13. I guess if they kind of cake it on or are heavy handed, so it looks like the doll is sunburnt or has a rash and it doesn't really flatter the sculpt. That's the only way you can go too as far as I'm concerned. If you want to every single part of you doll, that's your decision not mine. As long as your happy.

    14. Hmm. Well I'm a pig, and I appreciate well-blushed private parts. Not on my dolls, though. I don't WANT to explicitly detail my two YOSD's. I do think some people have sexy dolls. I like that there are all manner of dolls. That's good! It's fun to look at. I don't care what people blush or how explicitly but I won't promise I'm not going to laugh myself to tears if I see a painstakingly detailed Luts Zuzu Delf in an eagle-spread. That's just... XD Body hair is something I'd only care about on something over 40 cm tall.. Body hair does look really great when done well. Appreciation of beauty and sexual appreciation can be had of the same doll both at once. Why not?

    15. Hmm. I think it's about choice.
I personally like no detail down there. But I have no issue with it. I don't like how it looks but that's just me.
If I was to do blush, I would do nipple blushing and a little bit on the below bit. But not hair. Again, just because I'm not a fan of it.
If I had the ability, I would do whatever someone wanted because hey, it's their doll. But if I didn't have the skill, and I don't, I wouldn't do it. But that's just because of the fact that I'd want to do a really good job of it.

No, I don't believe blushing can go too far at all. Unless it's a child-looking doll and you've gone all out or there's hair on the privates. That's kind of weird. But I make no judgement.

    16. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?
As with everything to do with doll--whatever the owner wants to do is right for them. We don't have to put up with doing what others want, and they don't have to put up with doing what we want. Fair is fair. We get to be responsible for ourselves and our dolls.

And I'm, personally, not into judging, so there is no such thing as "right" and "wrong" when it comes to doing what you wish to with your dolls.

Nothing someone does is right or wrong. I can like or dislike what they do, but it's that's just how I feel. I'm not going to tell them what I feel because it's not my business telling someone else what to do with their doll.

Personally, I'm not that into full-body blushing because it can wear off if you put the doll in clothes a lot and pose it. I wouldn't be against full body blushing (if done how I like it--as in, well-done, not too dark or unrealistically), otherwise. It just isn't practical for me and my dolls. If I had a doll that I wasn't moving around a lot and sat about a lot in the nude, then I'd think about it! They seem so realistic--particularly dolls like Iplehouse EIDs, that it would seem odd to not have some blushing on private parts... Of course, your doll could be totally waxed and shaved... but they still would have shading and some skin-tone differences to make for a more realistic look... :sweat

Of course, some people are a bit shy about such things, so if a customizer doesn't want to do certain kinds of blushing, it would be best to find someone else! Or have one person do what they do and send the doll on to someone else to do the rest!

Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?
Personally--it depends on the doll and the look one wants. Despite thinking that blushing is not worth the money and time and effort and risk of wearing off... I DO have body blushing on some dolls--but they tend to go around with not a lot of clothes on. They still get their blushing scratched and worn, though. I've thought about getting things fully done, since I do have mature realistic dolls... but as they wear pants a lot, I haven't thought it would be worth it. And worn blushing is not that good-looking!

I don't think blushing can take away from a doll--unless I wanted to go for that sculptured marble look or something!

    17. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?

      In short, no.

I personally do blush all parts of my dolls; it's part of the process I have adopted of getting to know the doll better. I haven't done it to all of mine yet, but I do like to take them apart fully, clean all the parts, blush them and reassemble the doll. I prefer the look of a blushed body when paired with a completed faceup, and I like the way it accents and brings out the details of the body. And no, I have no problems blushing the nipples or bits of any of my dolls. I don't do a great deal of detail as they don't generally go around nude, but it would look completely wrong to me to omit a portion of the blushing.

I've also long ago accepted that there are "vulnerabilities" of body blushing (chipping, dirtying, and so on), but it doesn't bother me, as I can always touch up or redo a blushing if it becomes too severely damaged.

Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?

I think, when done well, it enhances the beauty of the doll quite effectively. I don't generally resell, and if I did I would wipe the doll first, so I have no concern for how it affects the extrinsic value, but intrinsically, the blushing, as well as the process of doing it, increases the doll's value to me.

    18. I have a doll with full body blushing and tattoos, and yes, I have taken nude pictures of him. I don't see how that's 'unwholesome'. He has a nice-looking body and I like photographing his 'life'. And that life sometimes involves having his clothes off. Nothing wrong with nudes in my opinion :) Although I know some people don't like nude photography, so I do always put a warning with it.

    19. In your opinion,is it wrong to have ALL parts of your doll blushed?
Wrong, no. Owners that blush their dolls are seeking holistic realism as it suits their characters or preference.

Do you think that FULL body blushing enhances, or can take away from, the beauty/value of your BJD?
If speaking of the value of MY BJD, I would say that it does neither. Blushing in my opinion doesn't add value; it's an aesthetic choice of the doll owner and conveys a very specific aesthetic. Even though it cost me extra; it doesn't mean that others will value it the way I do. I have a number of dolls but I'd really only consider one for blushing because the sculpting is exquisite. The other reason I'd consider blushing is if I had the body tattooed in some way.

But if we talk about the practicality of blushing or an artists/owners comfort level with blushing or a number of other nuanced observations about blushing technics - that is a totally different question.

    20. I'm only basing this off my doll but I hope this helps:
When I got my doll I ordered everything, I mean everything: face-up, hand, foot, body blushing, sanding, everything. I didn't quite know what to expect, but I was excited. Now I have a Lusion doll, which from what I understand is supposed to resemble a child of about 2-3 years old. When I got my doll and unwrapped her I was shocked and quite creeped out to find they blushed her naughty bits down below and up above! Although it makes her look more put together as a complete doll, it still makes me and anyone else who sees it uncomfortable. And this body blushing was light either. They really made sure you saw everything.

Personally, I don't feel it's nessecery on some dolls, and if it is, it certinaly doesn't have to be THAT obvious. So I think it is wrong depnding on the doll, but you should defiently have enough going on to be able to tell gender. As for taking away/giving to the dolls value, I see how it could, because it incompletes the "piece." Taking away from beauty....I really don't think my dolls who-ha is pretty, and didn't ever really care to take that much time admiring it.
