Cats and box openings

Feb 16, 2015

    1. I'm pretty sure every box opening should have a cat somewhere in it. Clipart works too! I have two cats and they are fascinated by bjd wigs. I learned the hard way when I first started this hobby to keep everything dolly related behind glass. That way I can taunt my kitties with fuzzy fur wigs and they can't touch. muwhahaha

    2. I have two cats, when I had just the one, I would leave my dolls out standing day in day out and my cat wouldn't touch them. When I got Willow, my Savannah kitten I knew those days were over. Now my dolls live in a drawer and the cats are locked out of the room before I get them out.
Boxes are a definite temptation, as are wigs.

    3. Cats love boxes! Mine love any box that arrives. They pay no attention to the dolls. The most they do is sniff them. I'm more concerned about my rabbit damaging the dolls since rodents chew things up :3 she loves the boxes too though :) I can see how a kitten might be trouble x) my cats are elderly so they sleep most of the time and they are very tame.

    4. My cats are thoroughly underwhelmed by box-openings and the subsequent empty box they produce.

They also don't care about my dolls. Two don't care - they'll sniff and wander away - and the third kitty seems creeped out by them and will move away if I put one next to her.

    5. now that you mentioned it .. yess it's very true .. i also have two cats .. i just love cats so much .. and not not really i don't think they can damage my dolls .. except for their hair that is so annoying and always end up covering my bjd clothes

    6. I think it may have something to do with introversion, but doll people overwhelmingly tend to be cat people too. In my UFDC club (non-BJD specific doll club) only 2 out of 30 or so members do not have cats. A lot of these folks are just collectors and not creative make-it-yourself types.

As for the box thing I think its hardwired into the kitty brain to investigate small enclosed spaces because:

      A. there might be small hunt-able things inside

      b. it might be a good hiding place from things that want to hunt me (the cat)

    7. LOL. So what about we doll owners that have both cats and dogs?I have two dogs and 12 special needs cats and a herd of dolls. But I am by FAR not an introvert. I am an extra-extra extrovert! I don't let my cat kids paly in my doll boxes or with my dolls but I do make an effort to bring home boxes for them to play in. They have three right now in their cat room that have been liberally sprinkled with catnip! They tear at them, pull them around, and generally have a blast!:aheartbea

    8. My cat would definitely be in the box

    9. I've noticed this a lot in box openings! It's really amusing. And there's always a cat in the box somewhere during the post/video~~ lol

    10. I am severely allergic to cats.
If I am going to a person's house that I've never been to before I have to ask if they have cats.
Most people just look at you like...What...

I know cats are animals and I love animals...it's just...whenever I see a cat...it makes my heart skip a beat. Not so much the cat...but the effects of them.

    11. I have a cat and she doesn't even go in my room. If she does, she looks around then leave. She doesn't jump on anything either.

    12. I have a cat and a dog. I am not so much worried about the cat and the dolls than I am with the dog and the dolls. I could trust the cat alone with the dolls, but the dog would think it would be the worlds most expensive chew toy. For the dog and doll's safety I will most likely keep the dolls in a box when not in use, or I may need to figure out some sort of display shelf or case/cabinet out of the way. The cat never goes onto shelves so they should be pretty safe on a shelf.

    13. I've seen my cat climb into and sit in a cereal box that he narrowly sit into standing up. If there is a box present, my cats MUST be inside of it.

    14. I love cats, and currently have four. One of my favorite things is seeing cats in doll videos because they just do their thing and sniff and get in the way. It is so cute.

    15. Totally not a cat person at all, plus allergies on top.

However, I do have a rat terrier who thinks she's a cat. Does that count?

    16. Dolls that are here to be customized are kept where animals have no access to them, but my first doll kind of belongs to my old tabby cat. She was definitely there for the box opening and is there any time any box is opened. Then she tries to cram herself into it no matter how small it is, ala Maru.

If I take him out to do anything like change his clothes, she shows up and curls up around him and squawks and clicks at anyone besides me who comes near him. She also pets herself with his hands. It's weird and cute.

I don't entirely trust even the most well behaved animals unsupervised around stuff like this, so I'm building a cabinet for the others, but I fear reprisal if I ever tried to keep her away from this particular doll.

    17. I honestly trust my cat, but he has a tendency to try and eat wigs. I left my alpaca hair out (my mistake) and he chewed up the end of the braid it had been braided into. So I had to cut, and salvage what I could. He loves to chew on fur, so that is the only thing I keep away from him. When it comes to the actual doll, he just sniffs it, and gets bored and walks away. I'd never really let him go close if I was doing a photo of him standing up though, in case he bumped into Nilla and knocked him over. That's just me, but I don't think people should leave animals unsupervised around dolls considering they do like to climb and knock things over.

    18. I'm not saying others should do it, but this is a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing. I do leave my dolls on open shelves, and my cat loose in the full apartment, while I'm not there. He ignores them. But I know from when I lived at home and had ceramic and porcelain miniatures that he leaves things alone. (Only humans ever damaged those, not him.)

So there are cases when you can leave them out, but you really have to know and trust the animal first.

    19. I have a cat and yes, I'm very worried. Mainly because, a long time ago, he chewed on my sister's barbie doll's feet. Till there wasn't a foot anymore just. messed up plastic. I have no idea if he ate them, was teething (he was like an young adult cat then so i doubt it) or perhaps using it to floss the lizard out of his teeth. And she kept them on the high shelf too so he just jumped up there and started gnawing when he pleased. Needless to say, I'm keeping my dolly feet away from him. Even though he's old gray and the material is definitely different from barbies.

    20. I agree, actually, I'm just overly cautious. Mine are old, and it just takes one mis-timed jump or squabble with the other cat for something to happen. They've never intentionally done anything rude to a doll, I'm way less worried about anything deliberate than an accident. Lots of people probably don't have that sort of worry (especially if there's just one cat, one of mine likes to chase the other.)

I just mean me personally (and almost always do when I spout some kind of opinion) so no judgments toward anyone who is a bit more cavalier, it just wouldn't work for me, too unpredictable.

Some people only handle their dolls with gloves, I certainly don't do that but it's okay for someone to go that route if they want to, definitely not up to me to decide how anyone else should care for their possessions.
