Character Creation: What-Race, Nationality or Species is your doll? Pt. 2!

Apr 28, 2012

1. All of my human dolls (so far- to be safe!) are English/Caucasian and are part of the ton in Regency London.

My fantasy dolls? They are: a mermaid, a previous mermaid, and a witch ;). I hope to get many different resin colors!

2. My boy is half japanese and half austrian, cuz im half japanese and i really want my boy relate to me in smeway i made him a mix blood~ i made his other part austrian cuz the char frm an anime called hetalia is called roderich and in the show he is like an ambassador of austria, there are other ambassador like ppl too like italy and japan, so everyone on the show call each other by their country lol, and i absolutely love him to bits <3!! so yea thts why lol~~

planning to get two more boys one a YOSD tht will be my curr boy's lil bro so he'll be half jap and half austrian, and another a SD doll which im getting to partner with my curr boy, for him ill make him full japanese for my story planned for them ^^

3. I wonder if anyone else here is like me?

I don't fix the race so I can change my doll's race anytime I want, everytime I switch the eyes. When I'm using pale blue eyes - she's more western and more asian when she's using the dark brown eyes :)

4. If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?
My doll she is half wood elf and half lycan.

There are obvious species like elves, demons, vampires etc, but have you ever discovered an obscure species to use for one of your dolls?
No not really.(at least right now anyway.)

Have you ever created a species of your own?
It depends if you consider half wood elf and half lycan a created species. (Because in a sense it would be because they are not lycan and not really a wood elf either.)

If not, would you ever consider it?
If I had a doll that fit such style then yes.(As well as if my main character met such species.)

5. If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?
I only have one doll that looks fully human but isn't. Aurora Hunter is a shape shifter and her alter-ego is a lioness.
My other dolls that aren't human don't particularly look human, either. They are two aliens, an alien-human hybrid and an ascendant demon.
Of my incoming and planned dolls, I have one angel and two more aliens. :)

There are obvious species like elves, demons, vampires etc, but have you ever discovered an obscure species to use for one of your dolls?
I don't think I've 'discovered' any obscure species. I'd say that metamorphs like Hunter are fairly common in the urban fantasy genre.

Have you ever created a species of your own?
Yes. I created an alien race called Erisans. I spent a lot of time with character/species creation and world-building. The Erisans are a technologically advanced race who have developed faster-than-light travel. They are evolved vegetarians (nobody on their planet eats meat) and they are also all empathic to varying degrees. The Erisans existed in my mind long before I got into the BJD hobby, and when I did get into the hobby and discovered that Resinsoul had blue and green dolls and that other companies had blue dolls, that made me pretty excited!

If not, would you ever consider it?
See the previous question. ;)

6. Leah, my only complete doll, is an elf. Then again, she's a BBB Ariel, so she has lovely floppy elf ears. She also happens to be Japanese.
Cordiel, who's just a head, is a phoenix. He used to be human, but a near-death experience made him manifest as my vision of a phoenix. Basically: immortal, fire and healing magic, regenerate after great wounds, very hard to kill. He's Welsh.
Michael, who's on layaway, is a homunculus, an artificial human made by a lonely alchemist.

In planning, I have a German half-elf, a Mexican-American changeling, a baku (who's Japanese? I guess?), another changeling, a jotunn, and some other various magical species...

I kind of made up phoenixes, since they're usually depicted as being all-bird (mine have wings and can turn into birds, but otherwise look human); I guess jotunn kind of count as obscure.

7. Let's do this again~ I have so much more to add and say ever since originally replying when the thread first openned! >v<

If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?

Nowe and Eien belong to the Elysian Fae race, a genus of immortal beings that can also be born bearing the magus blood that allows them to tap into the arcane. Arryn, who I don't yet own, also belongs to this race.
In addition to the Fae there also exist the Nefarian, the "dark counterpart" to the Fae. They are the result of a curse cast on a single king once upon a long while ago, but it apparently traveled down the generations and the Nefarian multiplied becoming an entirely separate race. They are also immortal and on top of their fair hair and dark skin as opposed to their fair skinned, dark haired cousins, have more potent magus blood. Frey and Eden are Nefarian, while two more, Idell and Nagisa, are halfbloods (they are considered Nefarian by the Fae, but are not as strong as either race, they are "first generation" Nefarian born from the unity of a Fae and Nefarian parent, their children or occasionally their children's children will be full-fledged Nefarian).

Finnick is a flower child, a small human being born in the heart of a flower blessed by Selvans who also happens to be the Original God (that created everything and all).

Mephistopheles and Lucifer are arch devils, and the Devil's sons, second and fourth in turn of birth (Lucifer is the youngest of a pair of twins). Other dolls whose characters are also higher devils include Amaymon, the goat-legged master of the bazaar and cardinal king of the east, Asmodai, son to a dragoness and drider (spider-human) and cardinal king of the south and Nai a small girl, part of a set of twins that are cardinal kings of the north.
Caspian is also an arch devil but used to be human, he was turned because he married to the Devil's firstborn and the "marriage/bonding" ceremony of arch devils include the necessary evil of being turned into the same race so the newlyweds may potentially procreate. Stern, commonly known as the Pathfinder is also a similar case. Once human, he acquired his demonic powers due to a trick of fate, after being driven by a mysterious force to devour a demon in order to stay alive.
Noname is a lesser demon that resembles a songbird.
Vesper is a demifiend, once human he was experimented upon in an attempt to create superhuman beings. He is one of only two surviving subjects currently.

Lavinia is a vampire lady, she was born as such and thus is considered a pure blood. It is possible to turn other creatures into vampires, but it's generally a practice that is frowned up and no civilized vampire would do that.
Suzuran was human but was turned into a literally tiny vampire because of a curse from Lilith and a slight accidental slip of the tongue.

Irie and Mirai are gynoids created for different specific tasks by a mechanic and artificial life enthusiast. Suigetsu and Yagate -the latter being the only android in the series- are created by the same person but I don't own them yet.
Kouki is also an android. He was, however, created by another party as part of an experiment that uses specific sounds and wavelengths to influence human emotion and behavior. The algorithm translates into different songs that have all sorts of effects on their audience. Unlike Irie and Mirai he cannot trigger most of these functions by himself and requires a handler instead.

Hellel is an angel that has since the beginning of his story fallen for a noble reason however. There are several more angels in the story, most notable the seven angel brothers that are Hellel's cousins. Ophan, Devon (Salafiel), Israfel, Sandalphon and Amesha are the ones that belong to me. Sandalphon is the only one who differs slightly from his brothers, being an Archangel -whereas the others are Principalities, with the exception of Ophan who is a Throne.
Praxis (original spelling Πράξις, in Greek) is also an angel but he doesn't belong in the main branch of the family. His rank is that of a Power.

Cinder is a newborn dragon who is a mere fourteen years of age, thus considered a baby. He still poses a formidable threat when opposed, being able to breathe three different elements.

Nightmare is well.. a Nightmare. A black mare with a burning mane and eyes of coal that can control fire. She can turn into a human form as well.

Metis, one of my dolls that is off-topic is a small imp. Although demonic-looking imps are considered fairy creatures and not demons.

Riveyner is a tora-youkai. Youkai are considered of demonic origin but are in fact an entirely separate species of their own. They are spirit creatures that can shape shift between a human and animal form, or even assume a form that is only "halfway there". All sorts of youkai exist but Riveyner's genus is a tora which means a tiger.

Ealdred is a spirit deer. He cannot shape-shift as he was created in the form of a human, much like his entire tribe. His power is tied to the land and the forest, much like that of the tree-folk, and is fueled by it.

Rune and Runa are homunculi, artifical beings created by an alchemist to aid him.

There are obvious species like elves, demons, vampires etc, but have you ever discovered an obscure species to use for one of your dolls?
I don't think I've discovered any new species... I've been studying the fair folk, elves and goblins for a long while and am really interested in all sorts of mythologies so I already had all the information that I needed and even more.

Have you ever created a species of your own?
Yes, the Elysians are an entirely made-up race!

8. I have almost all humans, but Chulyen's a bit of an exception. He's a forgotten god who has become mortal. Even he's forgotten his origin. It's unlikely he'll ever regain his memories of that time or his powers and status. Maybe that's for the best. He's finally gaining a measure of happiness, surrounded by people he loves, with a family he adores and living in a beautiful house in a peaceful town.

9. If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?
I have four types of human-looking-but-not-human dolls.
1. My Soom Migma looks humanish except she has a scorpion tail, purple skin and fangs. She represents a species of non-humans based on real world sirens. Instead of bird-themed, they are scorpion themed in my fictional world. They're still aquatic, though.
2. My Soom Hati and Skoll look humanish but are much too small to be real humans. They represent a species of non-humans who are basically monsters. They have been bonded with a human hunter, and grow by slowly draining away her life force.
3. My Soom Ai twins and my Soom Amber look humanish, but are actually all automatons (cyborgs). They were created by another character of mine and are essentially robots.
4. My Soom Galena and Soom Sweet Witch look humanish, except for their grey skin and wings. They're genetically engineered winged soldiers, created by the government to protect the state. They are kind of human (in that their original form was human), and kind of not (in that they've been altered to be capable of flight).
5. My Soom Chalco is humanish, except that he can control humans using telepathy. He's essentially a gene-engineering experiment gone wrong.

10. Of my current dolls, I have an elf species which I created. And one semi-human. (Not sure what I'm calling him yet, but he was human, but then a creature of indeterminate species partially took over his body)

When my collection is full it will consist of:
1. A halfling vampire
2. A three eyed raven demon
3. Another of my elf species
4. A werewolf
5. An Asena/human
6. A dragon/human shapeshifter
7. A regular shapeshifter
8. 2 ghosts
9. 3 "aliens" (not in the stereotypical alien sense, but other worldly)
10. A goddess
11. And a handful of humans... not sure how many yet...

11. The character I'm basing my first doll off of is some sort of....sea-dwelling half-human hybrid...thing. Her mother was a cute fish/mermaid alien and her father was a human...so she turned out to be a mostly human looking girl with gills and little mermaid fin ears. I'm getting a human doll to make into her, however, so I've done some editing to her design. She'll likely be a completely human-looking girl with an affinity to water and the ability to breathe under it, thanks to what is now a half-mermaid side. X3

Oh goodness, that may have been confusing rambling. Sorry.

12. i have a half-elf, drow, satyr, water demon, and one that's currently a gnome but i might re-character him into a halforc.

13. Cesavier is Russian, Neeko's father was Russian and his mother was American, Seraphine is English, Gretel is Dutch, Tristan's father is Russian and his mother is English, Fox's father is English and his mother is Japanese, Chaste is Irish.

14. If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?
Unbitten vampire (mom got bitten while pregnant).
Vampire witch.
Vampire elf.
Vampire who is clairevoyant.
Space bunny.
Mutate (genetically engineered human, lion, cat mix).
Mermaid.
Arcavi (looks like a satyr girl, brings messages using rainbows as transportation method).
Uknown being, is clearly not human, but hasn't told me her identity yet.

There are obvious species like elves, demons, vampires etc, but have you ever discovered an obscure species to use for one of your dolls?
The space bunny is based on the Japanese story that the face of the moon is a bunny eating mochi.
The arcavi is based on Iris (goddess) mixed with satyr and a hint of leprechaun.

Have you ever created a species of your own?
I made up the arcavi. I guess my space bunny has a unique twist of his own?

15. All my dolls are human looking, but before I got my first one I new I didn't want them to be human. I made my first boy a MNF Shiwoo an fairy. My next boy a DS Bernard I made a goblin, and soon to get here new boy a Iple Gentle Akando will be a wolf boy. I also really want to get a few girls later, and I think all of them will be nymphs of different sorts. The characters that I made up on my own are two brothers who are immortal equine beasts who are unwillingly changed to a human form.

16. Not sure if I participated in a thread like this back in the day, but things change, so might as well participate again!

First, some backstory on my "collections" or sets:
I collect dolls and fit them into sets, collections, or families -- so they have a world they can belong to, and I am not tempted to sell them. :3 Each set has a story with varying complexity. The codenames for my current sets are Teacup Fae, Toilet Prince, Wolf&Crow, Cutie Wing, and Creepyneath. Some doll/characters overlap stories and so may be human in one, but not human in another.

My human characters come from all sorts of ancestory: Jewish, Korean, Japanese, Indian, Irish, Italian, European, Californian (yes, I said Californian) -- but I won't go into detail. I'll focus on the magical folk instead. I will say that a small part of them are always inspired by someone dear to me or someone I admire, and sometimes that is represented through the race or ethnicity I give them.

If you have dolls that look human but aren't, what species are they?

In Wolf&Crow the dolls I currently have in the set look human but are not, though there is one planned who is human (and he is the only one so far.)

Reiji, one of two missing children from a prestigious family, is a direct descendant of one of the gods in that world. Despite being born to a human mother and having that of a normal human lifespan, he has gifts inherited from his supernatural ancestry.

Born a human into a family of what some would call alchemists or sorcerers, Inu became inhuman when his brother used his soul for experimentation. He tore pieces of his soul out and replaced them with the family dog's, which wasn't a very nice thing to do. So Inu ran away from his abusive sibling, took on the nickname he now uses, and tries his best to not let the inhuman part of his soul to take over. He rescues Reiji at some point and adopts him as a little brother.

In Teacup Fae everyone is cute little fairies or spirits representing delicious drinks. They are all under 20cm.

In Creepyneath I have one inhuman character, named Eko for now, but I don't have a doll for him as of writing this. He's a monster that hides under the bed of Orian, my littlefee Rolly boy.

I have one doll coming in who has no defined story. I'm going to make it a Goblin. :)

There are obvious species like elves, demons, vampires etc, but have you ever discovered an obscure species to use for one of your dolls?

Yes. Goblins! Not the kind in JRR Tolkien's world -- I'm writing a fantasy novel right now, and goblins are one of the races that populate the area.

The gods in Wolf&Crow are based off birds, some of myth (like the Phoenix) and some from nature (such as crows.) So, some characters in that story very closely resemble a humanoid version of these kinds of birds. Also, Inu would probably fall under the category of somewhat Frankenstein-ish, though his mishmashery is of the soul and not of the body.

Also, the monsters we have under our beds. Not everyone has a monster under their beds -- but some are unlucky enough to have them.

Have you ever created a species of your own?
Nearly all of my not-human humanoid dolls (and characters) are a species of my creation, with the exception of the teacup fae and the goblins, but even those are built around my own mythos and not an already existing template.

If not, would you ever consider it?
Since that is what I do, I'll pretend this question is asking if I'll ever consider using a commonly known species. To which I say... yes. I've always wanted a vampire doll, for example. Or a ghost!

Have you modded or styled a doll in order to make them fit more with their species?

Inu has a detachable wolf tail and pair of ears, but those are more of a joke, really. The only thing about him that shows he isn't human would be his eyes -- they are an unnatural blue, especially for his race. He had been born with darker eyes.
Eventually I'm going to tattoo him with the spells he uses, but that isn't really a reflection of his humanity, or lack thereof. ;)
Reiji also has strange colored eyes. They are silver.
When I find Eko, I'll be modding in a 3rd eye, so carving away at his forehead and sculpting out some lids.
When I faceup my goblin boy, he'll have a special faceup done to make him more goblin-like.

Thank you for reading my rambles. :)

17. So far, in doll form, I have a redcap/huldra cross who was hidden in the human world and raised by human parents. I also will soon have a faun.

18. Let's see, of the non-humans, Shorty is a devil-rabbit and Zed and Vey are elves (or spirits, or whatever else a pointy-eared, fantasy-coloured beast might be).

The rest are humans, because I find them easier to deal with. ;) In terms of nationalities for the humans, I characterize 7 of them as South Africans (Tshepo, Karel, Mmabatho, Roland, Nolitye, West and Arne), 9 as Canadians (Grant, Sarah, Laura, Omar, Imran, Shep, Zaina, Hugo and André), two Englishmen (Murad and Osman), one New Zealander (Davu) and one Italian (Angelo).

19. This is an interesting topics! I only have one doll now. He's Caucasian, German. Still planning what my next doll is going to be.

20. Ah, I don't think of my dolls has being a certain race or nationality. Most of them are human, but I toy around with the idea of putting fantasy parts on when I feel like it. I say "most" because I'm planning to get animal legs for one of my girls, and that would be more permanent than, say, horns which are easily removed.
