Character Creation: What-Race, Nationality or Species is your doll? Pt. 2!

Apr 28, 2012

    1. This is a very interesting thread! Most of my dolls characters are supposed to be human living in a slightly alternative version of our real world, but a few of them are of a different species. They're a kind of shapeshifters, where they can change anything besides their eyes(that hold their soul-literally-the eyes are like a soul jar that keeps their identity intact while they change the outside), but I don't have a doll yet who is a fully functional shifter. One-my Zaoll Muse-is one but got stuck inbetween a shift and is now neither male nor female, and has a rather unhuman appearance, even though he has all human parts-he doesn't have wings or elven ears or hoofs or anything, but there is still something very inhuman about him. Like a frozen time image. The other two are only half shifters, half human, and use these powers in different ways, instead of storing their soul to change their outside, their 'outside' is static but they can share their soul with other people and objects. They are twins, one of them shares the soul with people and became a courtesan, and the other can share his soul with objects, and became an artist.

I also have two dolls who together, make up one full person. One is the body, the other is the heart and they share a soul. When they are together, they are both complete, when they are further away from each other(in distance or emotionally), the body becomes more emotionless and the heart becomes invisible, like a ghost. They appear human, although again, something is a little off about them. They tell everyone they're just brothers and nothing else. Besides that, all of them are coming from somewhere within our world. The twins are Russian, the 'brothers' and my Zaoll Muse are French, their best friend is Spanish. Their story takes place in Europe, for the most part. I like the idea of creating a world that is like ours, but with an element of fantasy and something otherworldly that you don't detect right away. Plus, it gives me more liberties designing their outfits XDD

    2. My doll looks human but is supposed to be a humanoid-moon race who was cast-out because of his earth origins. His background is still being worked on, and isn't as obvious as just looking at him (He's not pale, but not tan either due to his parents). I still need to buy a few extras to have distinct features of a lunarian society so i can get him to play the part properly.

    3. Only two of the characters I currently have shelled are human, and they're the two most recent ones. They're both from alternate worlds, however, so neither's from an existing nation. (One is mixed-nationality in his world, the other isn't actually sure where he's originally from.)

Of the rest, six are an elf-like race I created ages ago; they're natural magic users, able to cross between worlds, and very high-fantasy in their part of the world. One and a half of them are an anthro-type race that predates the elves; they're actually from the more modern, high-tech part of the world, and are both researchers into the lost history of their world.

The remaining three are fairies, who just came about because I loved the sculpts!

    4. I have one doll so far, she came with the wrong set of eyes (long story,) so I'm still trying to bond with her. (With the different set of eyes, again, long story,) she looks very different. She's white skin, and I'm not quite sure what she is. She's ethereal looking to me, so I just assumed she was some sort of undead, tragic figure, nearly like a ghost but not quite. Or someone that's cursed in the snow. It's.... complicated. ^^; But I did enjoy reading the comment here, so many creative backgrounds.

    5. most of my girls are not completely human and there's a wide range of species: so far i have two cat demons, a satyr, a succubus and an incubus, three vampires, a fox demon, an elf, a dragon girl, a mirror demon, three that are part grim reaper, and a demon that grows diamonds on her skin.

    6. 3 pretty much european white folks and one little tanned english girl! :3 Nothing really special, all humans, all with natural hair color even. Ordinary people. It applies to me a lot more than any of this fantasy-styled stuff, not my area of interest.

    7. I have some humans, a demi-god, an elf and some guys which are dragon-human like, is a race I've created, they do some things such as turn themselves into real dragons -not all the draconem can do this, just some of them including the royal family- :)

    8. My first doll will be an elf boy, the second doll a half-demon girl. Honestly, I don't think I would get a human doll pretty quickly, because I find humans kinda boring. I like more exotic races. :D

    9. I have five supernatural beings, or spirits. They are, in essence, made up of the power of the universe. I also have one vampire (but two individual dolls to represent him), and four humans with a fifth on the way. I think it's fun to create a wide variety of characters!

    10. Kaylyn, his little sister Onyx and Emily are human, even though Emily has odd coloured eyes. Cody is a forest guardian, and Twix is a fairy. (Wingless)

    11. So far I have-
      Blaze, human fire mage
Yin, human who can send her senses through water
Sparrow, a race of dimminitive human who can communicate with birds- they call themselves Avianes
Kali, an imp who is a witch
      Planned-
      Kestral, a male Aviane
Hei, human capable of generating electricity
Hermes, an imp who is a wizard
Keba, a wolf in human form
Cheza, a teenage girl alchemically created from a flower
      Lulu Schiff, a cute vampire
      Raja, a frog-spirit-thing

So no normal humans. Magic or superpowers required.

    12. I have a few... interesting "not human" dolls that appear human. A few elves. One if a hybrid of Gremlin/Siren/Nymph/Human that had a full human appearance when she hasn't transformed. I have a male dryad (I don't care if it technically doesn't "exist", in my world it does! XD). I have a male who is part elemental being/part human. I have a vampire named Mina. XD And then I have a Native American fox spirit/human (not a kitsune, but an animal spirit). I was on a Princess Tutu kick at the time. She was from the Wild West and anytime she made a fox noise she turned into a fox (thanks mom!). She was a saloon owner and the way to turn back was to lick up some alcohol. There's a very long complicated story for Chula, but she's probably been one of my favorite characters. So far I have her form form (I know Fennecs are not native to North America but it was just so cute!) and need to find her perfect human form, which will include fox ears and a tail. So far I haven't developed any species. OH! I almost forgot my shifter (Razorclaw) who I'd like to shell someday.

*Added: I completely forgot (and feel terrible), one of my dolls is a Fetch! That is most definitely not human but looks human. XD ... And then there's my Greek goddess stuck in mortal form... (Long story.) In fact... I'm having a hard time thinking of dolls that are /just/ human....

    13. Surprisingly enough only two of my planned dolls are human. The one i'm waiting on though is actually an android who looks rather human. Eventually I plan on getting one who is Lucifer, he has elf ears sort of and an interesting face but other than that he looks human, I also have a couple of demons.

And two human ladies, maybe a couple of yo-s eventually.

    14. I don't know how to say this, but my doll's species will be just: doll.
I'm not saying she'll just be a piece of plastic or anything. What I mean is that I will base her species off Rumer Godden's ideas that all dolls are living and they can't move or talk, but to an owner who has an open heart, can wish. A doll can make her feelings be heard through wishing and so, my doll will be like that. Not a human, not a spirit, not a magical being, but just a doll who wishes. She will be based on a snowy human though. Like how you see people who look kind of like dolls in stories like Claudia in Interview With The Vampire, Cossette in Le Portrait De Petite Cossette and Victorique in Gosick. :)

    15. All of the dolls I have planned are human except for two, Ollo who is going to be an android, and Kage who is going to be a fallen angel/elf hybrid (made up from my teen years lol).

As for nationality, Ardese is American, though he comes from Spanish descent.

    16. My first and the main character is a snow dragon, and all my characters turn in to a non-human in a way or another. Most common species/race that I use is a vampire, because that's easy to imagine out and I don't have to deal with mortality : D

    17. This is an interesting topic that I haven't thought about too much before.

Yes, I definitely have some like this - especially my more stylized ones. I imagine that even in their backstories they are self-aware dolls!

Most of mine are probably human, though I definitely have a few that aren't: a fairy, an alien or two, a giant, a robot, an undead, and an imaginary friend. I imagine eventually I'll add an elf to the mix, and I think it'd be fun to have a ghost doll.

    18. All of my dolls are part of the same fantasy-type setting and, more specifically, all part of the same family. ♥ I have two groups representing different time-periods in their story.

      Present day
      Ilari: Vampire
Lorina: Woman who was killed and resurrected minus her soul
Mariana: Lorina's reincarnated soul (third incarnation. Ina was the second)
Emie: Ilari and Lorina's daughter. Born human, currently a werewolf.

      Mini Lorina: Human girl
      Mini Ilari: Human boy
      Lucy: Just a doll~!

    19. Mine are elf people, of no nationality, living in a post-apocalyptic world, where children are owned and traded by the unscrupulous. Pond and Dean are the beginning of a group of kids who have escaped this fate and formed a family, keeping each other safe and helping to save other kids where they can.

Thank dog for the internet! If I tell people in my life about this stuff, they just look at me like I've lost the plot!

    20. Out of my 24 dolls, only two are human, and only one has absolutely no "supernatural" tie to him. I tried to keep my dolls in categories for their species, but after all the years they've spread out all over the map. They all live in the same universe, and all know each other one way or another, which really seems ridiculous considering how different they all are.

So far I have vampires, dragons, immortal alchemists, a siren, an okami, mages, demigods and a fallen star. I find them more interesting when they're fantasy based, especially beacuse their backstories are always a lot more interesting. I wouldn't mind having a few more human characters, but every time I try to get one they end up finding their way to the supernatural side!
