Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. I looked around at a lot of dolls & played with some a friend had but I wasn't sure how to order directly from the company & didn't want to wait forever. I started looking at what US stores had to offer & kept being drawn to Elfdoll Lydia. There was something innocent about her face & she was realistic. A story for her popped into my mind & I finally broke down & bought her. Her story included a boy so I also indulged in Red.

I definitely wasn't unhappy with my choice. There were others I wanted by didn't know how to get them. Fortunately they each came up for sale on Ebay & I was able to add several dream dolls to my little family.

While Red was traded away a couple of years ago, Lydia is still with me. She had a bit of a makeover & isn't quite so innocent now though she's still a sweet girl at heart.

And yes, she was my own decision. I've never gotten one of these dolls as a gift.

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Honestly? I knew I wouldn't be able to earn the money for my first love DoD Lahoo [who I'm saving for now though] so I shot for my second love instead, DoD Yen [at the time, DoD was the only company I knew]. He was cheaper and smaller. I figured an MSD would be a good starter.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Haha. The only thing I wasn't happy about was something I didn't have a choice in. He came with pink eyes, the one thing I did not want. Makes me wish I had asked for green eyes. Oh well.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      DoD Yen. Luel is my first, and I could never see myself selling him. Even if he has yellowed some in the past two years. I'm a very attached and clingy person. Although, he really needs a new face up =3=;

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Actually, he could be deemed as a gift. While I had the money, my parents didn't let me buy him, so my auntie did for me. She paid for the actual doll + face up [well, she paid $400] and I paid for shipping, two extra pairs of hands and two wigs. Even though with her help I could've bought Lahoo, Yen was the one I showed her pictures of, and I would've felt bad ordering a different doll. But I'm glad I bought him.

    3. I didn't really have a set idea of what my first doll was going to be. I don't really plan these kinds of things out very well.
My first doll is a Gomidoll Half-Opened Eye Igon head. It wasn't too hard for me to decide on him. I was browsing through random bjd stores and I happened to find Gomidoll. Once I saw him, I knew right away that I wanted him. I planned to wait before I purchased him (I was hoping to wait three or four years, as I had promised my dad I'd only buy one once I graduated college) when I heard that they were going to close, so I convinced my dad to let me buy my first doll. It's been about six months since I bought him and I still have him!

I had no regret for choosing him to be my first doll. I did have to do his face-up five times before I finally bonded with him, but that was worth the wait!

    4. I looked at different pics of SD boys and narrowed it down to the ones that 'spoke' to me most. Thought I'd settled on a Luts Abadon once and for all until I went to the Elfdoll showroom and fell in love with Wu. The Wu on display pretty much told me his name was Cal and could I post his 'bail' please...;) I put him on layaway and that was that.

I am not unhappy with my choice. I don't regret him one bit.:)

Cal is my my first and my only...can't see selling him as I want a small family.

He was my present to myself!

    5. It was very easy for me. I won't buy a doll if I can't feel BANG when I see her/him. Before I found the one I really wanted, I didn't even consider having one. I wouldn't spent 500$ + posting, taxes, wigs, shoes etc. for a doll I'm not absolutely certain I want.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, I think my doll had chosen me. I fell in love with Luts Abadon and wanted him to be my first and only doll, but at this time I didn't know enough about BJDs, I was still in my research phase surfing the web for information. When I was looking for future clothes for Abadon, I found Soom's site and Sabik... I could't sleep anymore, only thought of him - I was totally in love. Even I still looked around for other dolls, I only had Sabik in my mind. So I decided he would be the first one^^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I think it was the same day I saw his pictures.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Sometimes I wished I had bought a smaller guy... There are also moments when I hate his body (too skinny legs and arms for my taste) and I feel bad. But then I look at him and he is so beautiful, I always forget all my doubts and I'm glad I had chosen him to be my first BJD.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Soom Mecha angel Sabik, still my boy *_*

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      I had chosen him myself

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well.. I've been interested in BJD's for a while.. And have done A LOT of inter-web surfing.. So I made sure to look for dolls I would love to own. But not only that, but were also a good deal. I wasn't going to buy just any doll. I was going to buy one I LOVED! And then I found her.. She was perfect, and one of the cutest and most beautiful dolls I've ever seen.. And I just bought her a few weeks ago after like a year of admiring.. XD

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I saw her.. And knew I just had to have her.. I love her face up so much.. I HAD TO HAVE HER! <3

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I've yet to get her.. But I don't think I'll be unhappy with her AT ALL. I think I'll be super excited when I get her.. And have so much love towards her. XD The only thing I wasn't really happy about is her coming with a blond wig.. But DoA is completely awesome.. And I found out a way how to die it! 8D

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll will be Loren from DollnDoll.. I don't have her yet.. But I'm sure I'll have her forever. :'D

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      I was able to choose her 100%! : D

    8. Actually, buying the 2nd or 3rd or 10th doll can be almost the same thing! Some things never change.

The main thing about being first for me was that I was buying it with the view that it would be the ONE AND ONLY /MUST HAVE. Of course, that quickly changed (about a month later), but I still TRY to keep that thinking... if this was the one and only doll I could get, would I still buy it. They are SUCH an investment, I think they need to be THAT important before even considering buying it.

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I looked about and did research for about a month... making sure I got the right size (I liked more mature dolls, large size was it, then; no MNFs available at that time)--that it had the kind of clothes and wigs available (more variety of clothes available for large size), I knew I wanted a boy (although girls were nice and that's what I got 2nd!), that the company and quality was reliable(I'd heard nothing bad about CP; I purchased through Liria who also had good comments)... I looked at everything that was available and tried to read every bit of info on them. I found a sculpt I adored, that could be THE ONE AND ONLY. And since it was limited, I had to order quickly, so I did! (it was back in the days of bank transfers and all, which was crazy to figure out, but DoA was a life-saver).

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I had a month of researching and shopping before I bought.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

I worried at first, of course, but I quickly fell in love--and never looked back!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Got him (CP Elf El) in 2004. Still my first and favorite! :D

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

      Yes/No

It's easy for me to know what I want... not always easy to decide to spend all that money, but I'm always happy with the doll, even though the spending is painful!

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

When I first started looking, I had what I wanted already in mind. I wanted a boy. I also knew my irrational fear would kick the idea of any really big dolls or really small dolls so I had to go for the middle and started looking for msd's.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
It hit me like a semi truck barreling headfirst into a ripe grape. It was love at first sight.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well he's currently en route so I'm not quite sure.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I've purchased a Mo 3 fullset with normal pink skin.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Like heck someone would buy me something so expensive! I hadd to get it on my own ;p

    10. After careful research on BJDs and web browsing, I stumbled across the first doll I really want. I really want the Rin doll. He represents a character that I can recognize with. I still trying to save up for him. I knew that this doll should be my first because well to be honest it a feeling that told me that he should be my first.

    11. Choosing a mold was an agony at first. x_x I was torn apart between Kid Delf and AS Lucifer, since I thought that first doll should be a more mature sized one. Also I knew I'd never have that much money in the near future as Lucifer costs. So I decided to wait, save, and see what will be.

Then boom! Christmas events. Christmas Luts discounts. Purchasing a doll became a very real thing. After some more days in agony I bought Kid Delf Bory. And now - even though he is not with me yet - I feel really happy with my choice. I look and other Bories pictures, box openings and fall in love more and more. I like him in every way, with any make up and wig. He's perfect in my eyes. I want to hold him so badly. Now I think the expensive price of bjd is a big plus, since you have more time to investigate and choose wisely.

    12. Well, it was a bit painful. I met the first bjd in my life about year ago, may be more. It was dollzone's Yuu. I fell in love from the first sight, but had no money then. Well, I actually had money, but I thought that it's crazy to spend them on a doll.
This october I found Soom site and... There was him, Sard - I've never saw anything like him before. I really lost my mind over him. But it was too late to make an order. I thought I'm gonna go crasy XD
But then I've found out that Sard has the same head as Dia. And it became only a matter of how fast I could get a credit card XD

    13. Choosing my first doll was very hard. I did’nt have much money and when I saw my soulkid Miryu I thought it was her and bought her :sweat
But I was a bit impulsive and I wanted her because she was cheaper than other ones. I finally changed my mind for unoas and I love my dolls now :D

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well I've just ordered my 1st doll and I'm waiting for her to arrive. I knew from the moment I saw her that I wanted - no NEEDED to get her - no matter the cost. I kept looking but I always came back to this certain one. I guess it was a weird case of love at first sight lol.

I have no regrets but I sometimes have to look away from my bank balance when I realise that I spent £275 ($410) on a doll ... but it's worth the money, I think. I'll just slave away at work to get the money back lol

    15. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked for a mold that I wouldn't mind blowing off a few hundred on. Browsing DoA helped sometimes. Oh man...I went through so many molds thinking it was the perfect one before I finally got the guts to actually put the order in.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I stopped thinking about it and just ordered it. I had to just do it or I'll forever 2nd guess myself.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was a little doubtful at first, but because of the huge chuck of money missing from my account. T-T And when I wish for another doll, I'm planning to just save for it because I don't think I'll have the heart to sell any of my dolls.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Erm...first ordered or which one first came?
First order was a DZ Hid--yes I still own it.
First arrival was a Puki PongPong--I would never sell her unless I really had to.

    16. XD oh god, arent those all tough questions? I had so many dolls in mind, I didnt think Id be able to choose! But thanks to my friend, I found Kid Delf Ani girl, and I instantly fell in love with her~!
It was still very hard to choose between her and so many others XD
Im not sure how I knew she was supposed to be my first doll, but I just had that feeling when I looked at her cute little pouty face <3
And to the extra question...yes, I chose her, but yes, she is also a present 8D

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Love at first sight hehe. I saw him and that was it! Paid in full in less then 30 sec ^^; Him being limited was a "now or never" factor as well.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
      see --^

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
      Nope! he is Godly!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Soom Sard, and i will own him forever lol.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      yea.

    18. Newbie here, waiting for my first doll to arrive...I ordered her early this month, but it took me over a year to decide on her.

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I did a lot of looking online. A LOT. Only one of my friends has a doll to see in person, and she's a very pretty Soul Kid, but I wanted one with a more mature body...And I knew I wanted one that looked more on the happy side. So I just did a lot of searching on eBay and company sites, off and on for the past year. I always felt that when I saw the right girl, I'd just know. And that's how it happened when I saw both DZ Orlando and Shoyo. Their faces are just so sweet! But I decided on Shoyo, because I like the smaller size.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I haven't received her yet, but I'm sure I'll be happy! I am a little concerned about her face-up, as I've seen some straight out of the box that I didn't like, and some that looked wonderful...even though they're all the same default look. But that can be fixed, and I still love her sculpt! Since I ordered her, I've found myself drawn to MNF Shushu, but I don't think I regret getting Shoyo...I'd like to have both!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I don't even have her home yet! I can't imagine ever selling her, though. She'd be too special, being my first and all.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
It was a present to myself! I don't think I want someone to buy me a doll, not unless they were buying one I specifically pointed out. It's just too personal, and I'm a crazy perfectionist. ;)

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Ironically, she was the first BJD I had ever seen.
It was a very compulsive purchase that didn't get fulfilled for a few months because of other expenses, but I was determined and eventually bought her off Y!J.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I saw her. She was so cute and innocent, unlike anything I had ever seen.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, I never became unhappy or regretted my decision. She is still my favorite mold.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll was a Volks Souseiseki and I do still own her. I've had her for almost a year now.

    20. mine was similar. i sent parabox the paypal fundsright away (lived on maruchan for the next week till payday) for a 60cm obitsu doll. i had a 27cm one for a posing model for my manga. i wanted the SD sized girl to be able to make clothes and stuff. this was only in OCT 08 though. i still have her and i still love her. now i have a resin doll and while my resin boy is more realistic looking, she poses better.

i don't regret it at all. right after i got her, i joined doa and other sites. learned more and blah blah. and i still love her.
