Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Mmmm, I was surfing for dolly sites and found Denver Doll Emporium, so I started looking through it randomly. Clicked on Dollzone and started scrolling. BAM! THERE HE WAS! In the middle of the page this waif with his hand on his head looking like he wasn't quite sure that he should be there. Instant freaking LOVE!
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I saved the site and closed it and went to do other stuff but that face kept haunting me and for the next 48 hours I kept thinking of him and writing stories involving him.... well that did it, he had to come home at that point!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Oh, every now and then, I see one and think "should I have waited?" but then I look at Nicco and think "Nope! He's MY boy!"

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Dollzone Megi-2. Since I've only had him less than 2 months yeah I still have him.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
He was solely my decision to acquire his mischievous self.

    2. Not hard at all, he was on sale, I fell I love with him*before I noticed he was on sale*, and he was bought. =3

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I saw Lishe on the Luts website, went to look at owners pics on DOA and my mind made itself upafter that.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew that she'd be my first doll after I no longer considered even looking at another doll.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was never unhappy with her.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Stupidly I sold her because a few months later I found another doll I liked(which I ended up hating) and sold her to buy that one (which I eventually sold too) and now I want to buy another Lishe sometime in the very near future.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I paid for her so I was able to choose her.

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Love at first sight I guess :D I saw her on some website.. and that was it.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When preorder was announced I knew I HAD to take part in it..like total must.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Yes and no. I fell in love with earlier version and preorder was for a new one.
I just hunted for earlier version after some time. Mold stays the same.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first was Unoa Lusis 1.5. I don't own her anymore.
      I've switched to 1.0 and I prefer 1.0 over 1.5.
Yet she's still Lusis (+ Sist faceplate)

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      I've choosen her.

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Well.. If I am to be technical-- my first doll was a 1/6 volks (off topic on DoA) -- but the only thing I could afford at the time. I was able to get him eyes and a wig-- but had to make him some clothes. :3

My next doll was more.. well.. kind of a mix between "I just want a doll!" and some planning.. It was a Soul Doll Paris head on a 60cm Obitsu 3 part body with optional male chest plate and a few other things. I bonded with him for a while but something did not click... His character has remained the same-- but his current and true form is a DM Kara Klum. ^__^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Eh.. It really just kind of happened.. I was enthralled upon finally getting BJD parts and bodies-- it was all very new and interesting-- despite thew fact that I found sewing for that Obitsu body to be near infuriating.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

In the end I looked at all the money I spent on being impatient and a little too impulsive. If I had waited and found something I truly liked to begin with I would have wound up saving more money in the long run. :3

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Nope.. that form of my character is gone.. The first 'doll' I ordered was a DZ Xi-- who has also evolved-- so he is off to a new home as well.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

I was impulsive and really really over excited-- so it just kind of happened. I guess it was kind of a present from my fiance (now husband) with him allowing me to buy all the things. :)

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? I was new to BJDs, saw a doll, and thought he was beautiful. His character came to me so I decided I would buy him. The difficult part wis deciding which body to get since I disliked the default for the character.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first? I knew it should be when I decided I liked the doll. Right before I bought though, I considered another because it would be easier since it would not be a hybrid. I did buy the doll I originally wanted however.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? When I got the body and realized it did not fit the neck whole of the head I wished I had gotten a full doll and not tried to make a hybrid. But it worked out and I am happy with my first doll.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it? Souldoll Lupinus- my Llewelyn. Yes I still own him and don't think I will sell him.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present? I received some money as a present that helped me get my first doll but which one was completely my choice.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I went surfing doll sites, and fell instantly in love with KDF Ani. Since this is too expensive an item to buy just because I love him at first sight, I went looking at owner pictures, and now I must have him. Wah. His sculpt can be so hideous with the wrong faceup, but with the right one, it's darling.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I looked at owner pictures. The Luts photos are nice, but his faceup is pretty boring--it was seeing the dramatic, gorgeous owner faceups that did it. He's just such a hit-or-miss sculpt; I love it!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I probably will, but then I'll just get the other head that I like. I have an income that allows for pleasure purchases, so it won't be a problem if I save up.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      n/a

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I chose her together with my husband. I had saved a lot of pictures and together we sorted out which we both agree on.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I had a picture of her in mind. Her costume, her wig, her style. I wasn't able to hold back any longer and ordered her.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Yes, sometimes I wish I had chosen a regular looking MSD one, instead of a doll which will only be able to wear one style and look.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      n/a she hasn't arrived yet.

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well i looked at heaps of Doll sites. I saw tan pado i was in love but then a while later and saw Rex on Soom and it was the most beautiful doll ever and i just have to do whatever it takes to get him:D i a couple of weeks ago now he's on layaway. I can't wait to meet him:)
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I researched a lot about how to buy him. No matter what i just knew i had to have him. It's like a feeling i've never had.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
      i hope i'm not.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      n/a

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was saying to myself since 2007 that if I got a BJD, I'd make one for my comic character. But as I looked around, I was just finding dolls that looked like teenage boys with large heads and wide eyes. Deciding that it wouldn't suit him at all, I gave up on that notion. I was looking around BJD sites a couple of months ago looking for outfit ideas for my pixel dolls (I own/run an avatar site with dress up pixel dolls). I came across Soom's site, and I was just browsing through the dolls looking at their outfits. Then I saw Spinel. I was like... HOLY CRAP. IT'S A MAN. D: And I fell in love.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
      Right when I looked at it, I didn't have any urge to buy any other doll. I had to get him. But, I decided to put that on hold for awhile. XD;

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I haven't even ordered my doll yet. So I can't really say. T_T But I'm pretty sure that I'll be completely satisfied with him.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I still don't have my first doll yet, but hopefully that will change soon. :)

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I`d seen BJDs before, but didn`t actually know what they were. As soon as I found out what they were and where to buy them, I knew I was really interested in buying one.
Then I found Bory and was like "Squeee!"
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
He was, and still is actually, the first doll I`ve seen that I really wanted. Like, I`ve seen dolls before and went "Oh, pretty :3" but I wouldn`t buy them. But I just had to buy him. XD
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No way! As soon as I saw him, I loved him even more. :3
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Bory is my first, and only, doll. I still own him. xD

    12. Ok so my story of my first BJD is a little funny. For the longest time I wanted Ducan, I just knew he was the one i've been wanting. I would often go and look at his picture and just want him. But when I went to Fanime, Junkyspot had their both with their BJD's on display. All I wanted to do was just hold one. I held a few MSD Dollzone girls and when i came across Yume I was in love. I loved her little body and her face. It was like love at first sight XD So I ended up buying her. And I do not regret it to this day.

    13. My firsts are a pair of littlefee shiwoo (still finding their way home). It was quite a lot about how much I can afford. I had a budget of $500-$700. I wanted a white cat chris as my first, but there wasn't any selling at this price. Then I moved on my wishlist and looked for a Lucas, but of course there isn't any selling at this price either.
Then I asked myself if I actually wanted a large doll as my first if it would not be a Chris or Lucas. I gone through the rest of my list and realised that I don't actually want them too desperately. And it would be lonely for the doll if it is the only doll and that I might not play with him much (as it is not the one that I desire the most). And I feared I was just looking for a replacement of Chris and Lucas and that would just be bad.
So I turned to search for tinies and I thought I'd just go for the most posable one which is within a reasonable price as tinies are needed in the doll family I have in mind. And I just came across littlefee. Looked at the picture of the body, the owners pictures, some member's comparison pictures, then I thought that's the right body to start with and I can afford a pair, so they can play with each other. And little shiwoos face is just too cute to refuse him. And of course there is an event going on which I might as well buy during that period since I would buy him later on anyway.

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Well, basically, Luken decided that. Sneaky little bugger managed to get on top of my "wanna have"-list - above Hound and Saint - by pretending no one loved him and he wasn't the most popular doll and so on. I'd say it was less of a decision and more of a gut-feeling to get him.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Hmmm ... "know" is maybe saying too much. It's hard to describe. I had money for one BJD and several on my "wanna have"-list. Hound - the first one who struck me as "wanna have". Saint - I call him "Severus Snape Junior". *lol* Limwha Mano - good thing I didn't get him cos now, I don't like his face at all anymore. And Ark. The "dark one". The one who, to me, looked like Snape after Neville Longbottom's blown up another cauldron and disintegrated half of the Potions classroom. :) I looked for owner-pics on the net, using Google. Well, there were plenty of pics of Hound and Saint (Limwha Mano was not an option, then, as they weren't taking orders) - but almost none of Ark, except for promo pics. Which made me go "Awww, poor unwanted fellow - I'll get you!" Yeah, poor unwanted fellow, right. Sneaky little ... *lol*

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Nope. Not once. He's absolutely perfect. Even absolutely perfect the way he came. I like the custom face-up. The blue eyes he came with are gorgeous. And the wig that fits him best imo is the one Unidoll sent me with him. It's really too bad I don't like the new Dollshe-body and thus, won't get a new Hound or Saint anytime soon (if at all) but that doesn't make me regret getting Luken instead.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Luken (my Ark) was my first doll and yes, I still got him. And I won't ever part with him, not even if my interest in BJDs should end. I don't have a very large collection of BJDs - two now. Third one's gonna be an Akando and as it is, with him in my tiny flat, I'll be right out of space for further dolls. ;) I'm not planning on ever selling any of my dolls again, so ...

    15. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
My first doll was shiro-tachibana about 2 years ago. And I won him from the after school ver. lottery. I just bought the book and join the lottery. Luckily, I won the lottery and shiro came back home later.(after about half year waiting)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I first met him on the volks website n I decided to try if I could won him from the lottery.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Never. Actually he is my favourite dollfie until now and maybe forever.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Shiro. yes, he is still with me.

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I did a lot of looking around at various sites, and gradually narrowed it down. I had a few ideas in mind, and I kind of looked for something based on those ideas. I bookmarked the ones that struck me, and then set it aside for a while. It was probably at least 6 months between my web searching and the actual purchase.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
After my great bookmarking, I went back and looked at the ones I had narrowed it down to every once in a while. In this manner, I gradually cemented my choice by deleting the bookmarks for ones that weren't sticking in my mind as much. Eventually I had it narrowed down to the one I purchased.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, but she did surprise me. I had intended her to be blonde, and ordered an extra wig with brown hair with her for the event head I was getting as a bonus. The brown hair turned out to suit her better than the blonde.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
An Iplehouse Iris. I just got her recently, so yes.

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was looking around on Luts and he caught my eye and I knew I had to have that one.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Instant love! <3 I loved Dion from the moment I laid eyes on him. MUST HAVE HIM! $600, no problem. I mean it'll only take me 8 months to save up and he's out of stock but he'll come back....

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No! I LOVE Dion! :D I bought my Sabriel (Cian) at the same time and I adore them both!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Dion and Sabe came at the same time and YES I still own both! I could never part with either!

    18. My first was a NariPon.. fel in love with Juniper Snowpea antics that are posted on Prego.. I didnt keep her tho..she was just too small.
Next was a Nabi Kiss i got in a swap.. i still have her, but she doesnt inspire me to sew..or play,so she is languishing in her box

I just got a Bisou..havent had time to get to know her, but ordered some wigs.. and i have a huge Kish Riley collection, so there are clothes and a 5 story furnished doll house..and extra stuff

I bought a Goodreau, but it is defective and is being sent back

so basicaly, i am still looking.. for a teen body, not thin.. 14 16 inch to dress in Japaanese street chic"Fruits",,soi can mix and match all the eras of clothes.. i love the funky mixtures

and I do drool over the gorgeous Narae faceups
I have problems ith the "kicky" legs and get frustrated with them..

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I went through every gallery post and company website I could find. In the end, I still ended up getting a doll from the same company that the first doll I'd ever seen came from. It took me about 2 years from first seeing a BJD to actually purchasing one.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I kept coming back to him over & over again.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No way! I'm completely happy with him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Bluefairy Tiny Fairy Niky, aka Seth. Yes! He's gone through a couple eye/wig changes, but he's still so freakin' adorable. I 'squee' almost every time I look at him and I've had him for over 2 years. I always tell myself, if I ever had to sell the rest of my resin crew, heaven forbid, I would never sell Seth. ^_^

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Did I choose him or did he choose me? :? He was kind of a present from me, to me for finally getting a real job. :p

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
-I'm the type of doll owner that goes by the looks that capture the character of the doll the best. It was easy at first because my character was strong, thus eliminating all the delicately pretty, fashionable, and pitiful looking females out there that dominate the market. It became hard when I narrowed it down to 3 choices, though, because the molds all had that spark in them, but they were all different, and not quite on the dot. Then I spent a long time debating because I knew that I couldn't go wrong with any of my choices. Figured that even if they aren't spot on with the character I envisioned, it's nothing a good face-up couldn't fix.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
-I think it was after I got my choices down to two (CP Soony and DOT E-an), then I chose based on what doll was more popular and went with the less popular one because it was more chances for me to express her character in a very different way.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
-Not in the least bit. As time goes on and I handle the mold more, I find that I made the right choice and I would have been unhappy if I went with Soony because although she has a quality of character that I fall in love with every time I see her, I don't fancy her big, doe-eyes or the lack of flexibility in her mold. The DOT sculpt has more qualities I like more versus the qualities I dislike, and every time I change her face-up, the face captures the character better and better. I don't think there was much I could do with the Soony face because it was a little too distinctive.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
-I've been more than happy for almost seven months with my E-an.

      -------------------------

However, now i'm in the market for a suitable male partner for my E-an and I find that it's even harder because of the overly-feminine molds that dominate the market. The ones that are manly are too much of the big-brother/tall,dark, and handsome type, and every potential one I spot is a tough call because I try not to let the company pictures with their pretty, pretty face-ups influence my desicion. Top that with the fact that it's my fiancee's character I'm trying to find, and that's a different type of tug-o-war because it became apparent that he and I had a different vision of who his character was.
