Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I took one look at her... and at first the price tag was discouraging (volks masha) but after almost two years of searching, she was the only one that stuck in the back of my head. I knew I wasn't just settling with her.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

When I was done changing my mind, and as I said before "settling" for dolls I liked... but didn't love. I thought she was perfect from the first moment I saw her, and no other doll did that for me.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not so far :) She hasn't even arrived yet ( just a couple more days!)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She is a Volks Masha, read above answers.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Ha! I had to work my ass off... two years of saving and working. So yes I chose, and I made sure I chose wisely.

    2. My first doll was a Camine from DOD. I was one day looking BJD websites with my friend... then we entered to DOD and I saw the Camine, I thought "wow! is beautiful!" and every day I entered to DOD to see the pictures xDD and I decided to buy it.
I am happy to have my Camine, I love all my dolls, but my Camine is the most special ^^

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Actually, it was kinda crazy picking my first doll. I started wanting a limited doll, then another non-limited, then another non-limited, then went back and forth for about a month with deciding. At the very last moment, I decided on Chiwoo from Luts, even though I was hardly looking at luts at the beginning. It was quite a suprise.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
There was nothing to hold me back from him. All of the others had some kind of quality that made me resist. I remember is was down to Chiwoo and Camine at the end. I chose chiwoo because most Camines I had seen, while still very very awesome (and I still might get one someday) looked a lot alike to each other. I hadn't seen many unique looking Camines. And so I went with Chiwoo.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all. Miles is still my favorite overall. He has a special place in my heart. It was after I ordered him that I came up with his personality and style (although it has changed a little bit since then). And I grew to love him even more.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Miles my Chiwoo and yes, I do.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yep. No way anyone else was going to pay for that. :sweat I had money saved up because I don't spend my money much, and that was that.

    4. My first doll was a Volks MSD F-09. I purchased her through the FCS in LA. She was My first doll because I couldn't pass up the chance of NOT ordering while I was in California on a trip, and Volks was the only doll company I knew of at the time. Since then my knowledge of the hobby has grown signifigantly, and I own varied dolls.

I decided she would be my first because I thought I would bond well with an MSD sized, female doll. Marina, was supposed to be the only BJD I thought I would own based on the price and how difficult I thought they were to purchase.

Honestly? I am disappointed with my choice. Not the service from Volks, or the cost, but my choice itself. I've come to realize that I prefer 1/3 male dolls (I have one full doll, two heads, and plans for another full doll to have by mid-year.) Because of this I've had trouble bonding with Marina, and then more trouble integrating her with my other boys, basically because of her size.

As for my second doll - he's absolutely a keeper and I now know whether I will love the doll I purchase or not. If during the course of saving, or after the purchase, I keep going back and back to the website, just to look at pics (even though my doll will look nothing like the 'default') I know I'm going to enjoying owning it. That's the way was/is with Kells, my Abadon. I could never sell him.

My first doll was Marina, an FCS from LA, and I still have her, but I wibble back and forth over if I will sell her or not. She is a Sunlight Skin MSD F-09, and I purchased her myself.

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
This might sound a little too rushed, but one of the first sites [Volks was first, so this was maybe second or third?] I came across selling dolls was Dream of Doll, and I clicked on "DOT" at random, since I didn't know what they were, and fell in love with Ducan's thumbnail. That was when I chose my first doll. After I ordered him [that same week] I joined DoA.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The moment I saw him. xD

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Luckily I don't regret my choice at ALL, and I love my doll, and am a huge fan of all things DOD. :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Satsuki; my DOT Homme Ducan. I still have him and he's also my favorite. c:

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yep, the choice was all mine. He was a present though, as my mother and father got him for me. I buy my own dolls now[except for Izumi, she was a christmas gift from my parents], but I do sometimes borrow money from my parents for dolls, but I pay them back.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Actually, I had been going to a website regularly to read graphic novel that was being posted by chapter. I noticed that a few months went by with no updates and realized she had added something about dolls to her website. I clicked on it and my jaw hit the floor. I always dolls were either Barbies or babies, I had no idea that a gorgeous hunk of resin like the Unidoll Jace even existed! I had to have him! I did a lot of research on bjds after that and talked with Kara more than she probably liked. But I never went into this thinking I would be buying my first doll or starting a new hobby, I just had to have him. It was a very visceral thing.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

The moment his picture loaded on my computer screen. I did do a lot of looking around once I learned about bjds and the many styles but my decision never once waivered.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that
      you've ordered another one?

Heck no. Never. Not even once. I did not even mind the 4 days per week ramen diet to save up the money to get him sooner. Nope. Not at all.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Alec is a Unidoll Jace, and yes.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I had many choices but i don't know when i listed out the dolls i like the only one that i like was the tan dollie from dollmore.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
How did i know? well when i was searching through dollmore the first doll that draw my attention was the suntan asha and it was like love at first sight^^

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Noo i was TOTALLY satisfied by her she has a amazing mold and i love her...even now and than my sister really adores her that she wants her own suntan asha^^

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll is a dollmore kid suntan asha and YES! i still own her <3

    8. i dont remember much, but when i saw duchess on junkyspot i thought "MUST HAVE!!!" i guess it was that fact that she was blue that got me, also i think she was like the thrid doll i ever saw :3

    9. Long and bizarre experience for me. I won't forget this.

I knew nothing about SD BJDs but strayed into Volks database of LE SDs. I looked through the LEs. Isao (ver1) and Cecile (ver1) stood out. I found out, they were long sold out. I gave up. I decided to order standard Link because I need a new doll since I'm new to BJDs. However, I decided to wait at least till I see the LE of the LA Dolpa (online sale) last year. Before Volks even announced the LE, I saw Isao (ver1) on ebay. A complete doll with box but without outfit and wig. The Canadian seller lived nearby me. For days I could not sleep, it was as if the doll could speak to me. He wants to come home. It's a big step for a newbie to click on "Buy it Now" for Isao Nanjou on ebay but the seller is good, she provided pictures etc. Shipping was fast. He arrived home within 2 days in freezing rain! As it turns out, I got nothing out of that LA Dolpa because the one offs were hard to get and the LE was unsuitable because I am looking for a boy doll.

I am still in shock how Isao ended up as my first doll instead of Link. I have since found Isao's original full set outfit, I am only missing his wig to make a full set. I love him to bits. He was the doll that stood out for me in the database of LE SDs. I'm just thankful I got him. I always remember the first time I saw him from the database, I really told myself to forget him. :|

    10. WOW! stargazer_i talk about luck! Congrats!

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, at first the only ABJD online shop I actually knew was DOLMORE. And at DOLMORE I liked the HOUND mold the most, but then I discovered LUTs. I was actually a bit unsure at first, I had fallen for two of LUTs' dolls at first. I really liked both their Delf YDER and their Senior Delf CIAN. And I was not sure which one to purchase first...

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Quess it was the will of fate, because before I got the money, it all settled it self... In a pretty cruel way... CIAN got SOLD OUT. So I bought YDER.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
NO deffiantly not! I'm very happy with my YDER, he's wonderful!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first was LUTs Delf YDER and yes I still got it.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yeah I chose it, and no it was not a present. I used all the money I'd earned that summer 2008. XD

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
When I first got into the hobby, I looked around and was like "omg, how cute." "I'd so buy that." Then I saw the Breakaway... dude, my head exploded I never thought I could see such a pretty doll.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I tried saving for a Chiwoo Elf (which I still want) then after awhile, I just realized that I would not be happy without a Breakaway and wouldn't get him as my second or so on, so I just kept going after him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Hell no. Every time I look at Oren, he makes me happy; he really calms me. I noticed some think just because Oren is from Fairyland that he's not as "holy" as the Luts one, but you know what, idc. I can honestly say, I really prefer the fact that I got to open his eyes how I wanted them and not have to worry about him being a vampire with those fangs.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Oren, my Breakaway, is my first and only. I've owned him for around a month and plan to keep him forever.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yeah. My mom got tired of me asking for the same thing the past three years, same with my dad. So they gave me some money towards him and I just happened to have enough to buy him.

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, I didn't know which doll was going to be my first until almost three weeks ago. I knew what I wanted the doll to look like but deciding what face was right took me almost two years! I wanted to base my first doll off of a roleplaying character of mine Adrian Fii but finding the Romeo doll that was going to be him took forever.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
      Three weeks ago.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I'm actually happy with the choice. That's why I waited so long to buy him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I haven't gotten him yet, he's paid for, I'm just waiting for him to come home.

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Technically... no. John (my fiancee) choose him for me.

    14. The first doll I bought was a dollzone cherry. At that time I loved bjd's, and came across a Dutch BJD agent. I was afraid to buy directly from asian companies and I found the dolls very expensive. So I looked at the website of this company and I noticed their dollzone dolls. At hat time, I really liked their faces and when I decided to go for a 1/3 scale doll, the cherry was the one I liked most. I really, really liked her at that time.

So I saved up and bought her at the december event of 2007 (so I got the dollzone coney as well).

But when my Lu-wen (second doll) arrived, I noticed differences between the dolls. I also noticed quite a few imperfections at the dz cherry, with her elbow misfit being most noticable.

And from that on, I started to dislike her. So at this moment I wished that I have looked further, comparing different dolls with eachother to make a better descision.

However, I did not sell the doll. I am going to do some extreme modding to her, like closing her eyes a little, dye the whole doll, add horns and such. So I really hope I'll end up loving her, although she will look like a completely different doll. :)

    15. When it came down to it it was between DZ Wing and DZ Yuu. Took me ages to decide (almost 2 weeks!). In the end I went with Wing, and I never regreted it. ^^

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I had only heard of the hobby for a couple months, had joined DOA, and decided that I would get an SD boy for my first. One day I went to the luts page, and accidently clicked the kid-delf tab at the side column. And Bory's face popped up at the top of the screen and it was instant love. :D

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I began to obsessively check the kid-delf page everyday, and was so drawn to him...that pout ;-; I had to have him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
NEVER!!! I love Kori to death, he's so shy and quirky x3

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Kori a kid-delf bory NS (boy), I've owned him for nearly two months now, and I doubt I would ever sell him.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose him, but my dad ordered him for me...and payed for a small portion of him x3 So I guess it's half and half since he was partially a Christmas present I guess....

    17. it took me a good year. i kept looking at sites and would think "well i like this one but i'm not sure" and if i wan't sure, i didn't buy it.
when i saw bubble, something said that she should be mine and i bought her.

    18. Not hard at all, when I saw DZ's Hong I went all ' OMFG THAZ RACE' and since I had the cash ,it went bingo xD

    19. I sort of decided my first doll partially on a face-mold I loved and partially on what I could afford.

Initially, I was a bit uncomfortable with the notion of a doll as large as a SD, so I looked into MSD's primarily. I really loved Souldoll's Soulkids and there are about five of them that I really like. Out of those, I liked Soulkid Katie the best. After liking her for about a month, and with Christmas coming up, I only asked for money to go towards this doll.

By mid-January, I had the necessary funds but was having doubts about the specific doll I had initially liked. I scoured the web for pictures of the new Katie model and found only one person who had one. It took a little bit of convincing before I ordered her, but I have had absolutely no regrets since then. I am happy with my decision and I can't wait till she comes home.

I think I had doubts because this is one of the most expensive things I have ever bought, second to a computer which was something I needed. However, I have always wanted to collect dolls, so spending the money (especially since it was mostly as a gift) was not an issue; I only had doubts as to the exact model.

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I wanted a second-hand doll, that narrowed down my search alot. I'll be ending up with a third-hand ODT. I'm very excited.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I sent the money through paypal. =w=

Did you get unhappy with your choice?
I am not unhappy with my choice yet!
Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?[/B]
No, I can always order another doll later.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      OrientDoll Tae.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      I chose him.
