Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I spent a lot of time researching, looking at pictures and pretty soon narrowed my choice down to a large (60cm) Elfdoll. I was torn between Soah, Sooah, and June.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

When I received an email from the face-up artist. She had painted June so perfectly, so right out of my dreams, I knew, I had to have her. I immediately emailed and managed a 30 day layaway. At which point I listed a bunch of other dolls/doll items on ebay for 3 day auctions and June, now known as Isabelle was mine!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
      Nope...she's perfect

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

60Cm Elfdoll June, faceup by StarStudio and yes, she's right here demanding a new gown!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I actually went through numerous phases of liking certain scuplts before deciding on which one. At first, I was going to get a D.O.T Sha, but then the D.O.I line came out, so I wanted a D.O.I Luke then. Then I found out about Migidolls and wanted a Migidoll Miho, but when I found out it was only the head, I found to my chagrin that I could not have one yet. So I went back to wanting a D.O.I Luke. Then I stumbled across Dollmore and felt really attracted to the Kyle Reese sculpt because the face reminded me of my favorite singer, so the deal was sealed. <3

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

It just sort of clicked after I realized who the sculpt resembled. I had originally designed Hero based off of the aesthetics of my favorite singer, so when I realized the scuplt also looked like the singer, I knew it was the right one.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

      No, in fact, I was very happy to discover that my choice ended up being even more suitable than I thought. The height was perfect, considering that Hero is a tall character to begin with. XDD;;

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

My first and currently only doll. <3 Of course I still own him. :] He's been here for about... close to a month? Needless to say, I grow more enamored with him with each passing day. :]

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

He's my early graduation present, so yes, I chose him. XDD;; Even his clothes and accessories.

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I'm still looking to buy my first doll, and with all the research I'm doing I keep coming back to the MNF A-line dolls. I know that's the body form I want (at least 99% sure anyway), but then the head was the next issue to tackle. I won't be able to buy my first doll for quite sometime :( so I'm figuring out each piece I want down to the very last detail. As of right now though I am in love with the Soo Dark Elf head with an MNF a-line boy body :D . I'd like to be able to hold an MNF irl to know if that size is right for me or not.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I've been looking into these dolls on and off for a few years now, but it wasn't until recently a friend of mine was getting into them as well (and soon to be getting her first doll) and dragged me down to the depths of BJD no return. When I was scouring around the forums I saw a picture of the body type I was looking into, for my dolls are based off of my characters. It just screamed him (which I found kinda sad cause the definitive picture for me was a picture of a girl lol :sweat) and once I get a job I shall be getting them.

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

At first I fell in love with Bluefairy May, but when I saw photos of real owners and not only the ones in their oficial website I decided I wanted another one, and then I saw Iplehouse Tania, and I just loved her cute face. Then I decided she should be mine someday ^^.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I thought that my first doll should be the one I like most, and nowadays she is.

(I haven't bought her yet T.T but I'm saving money for it)

    5. No decision necessary. it was Lucas. He called to me. It was love.

    6. It took me a long time to decide on Kun as my first-- it takes me a long time to decide on anything doll-related really, though. ^^;; But I spent a long time looking at the Volks website and deliberating over which one seemed right. For a while it was between Kun and Nono, but ultimately Kun's more realistic-looking and sweet face won out. ^^ My interest in Nono started to wane while I found I couldn't stop going back to Kun's page and thinking up names for her.
(It was mostly the same when I got my second doll-- at first I thought 'meh, I don't really need her' but I just couldn't stay away. XD When that happens, I know it'll be a good decision.)

In all, it took about... four months to decide. >>; I like to be really sure about my decision before I buy something this expensive. But it was worth it!

    7. My criteria was pretty simple: Elf Ears. Circa 2005 that left me with about two choices, so I played it safe and got both! Lovelyhouse ShinCho and Serendipity Sharmin.
I didn't end up keeping either, even after all the 'research' I did, but oh well! XD

    8. The good thing about ABJDs is that they retain their value, so you're not really going to lose the money you've invested if you do happen to buy a doll you don't get attatched to...

    9. My first BJD was a tiny Jun Planning Ai (not even allowed on DOA) that was more or less a random adoption while at Ohayocon 2009. She was just staring up from a little padded box, begging for a good home. I had the money and had been interested in BJD for a couple years... so, Sofia was my first.

As for my first well though out purchase of a doll... Bobobie 60cm Apollo... It was very difficult to bring myself to pay so much for a doll. I didn't want to at first, but I kept researching and getting perpetual drawn into the idea as days went by... Bobobie Apollo (now named Trez) was cheaper than most dolls, had a sweet face, and a generally smexy body. I figured out that clothes were hard to find for him, but that would push me to be more original and possibly make my own... I need to be more creative, especially with the toils of college hindering my art time...I slept on it for a week...then, I baught him. I had the income tax return to do it and so here I wait. I should have my first (allowed on DOA!) big BJD by mid March.

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I had wanted a doll for a few years, but when I decided to buy one, I started going through different companies and their dolls. And I saw DZ Mo. I thought he looked very nice, but still I continued looking at other dolls if I could find others that I like. Every time I saw a doll that i thought I could buy, somehow I started to think about Mo, and after that I didn't anymore want to buy that another one. So I always came back to think about him. I kind of felt like he was the one to be my first doll.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, I liked what I got. And still like, very much. :aheartbea

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
DZ Mo, and as people can guess, I still own him. ;)

    11. I know I first saw a BJD a few months before.
Then, even though I kept looking at doll sites, I couldn't find any that'd simply call to me~ I've always chosen dolls/pets/plushies/anything on the base of how connected I feel with them.
And then I found Zaoll Luv...although it wasn't love at first sight I did keep coming back to her xD
And eventually..yeah. Eventually she was the one.

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

It's not easy to decide because of the great amount of dolls in the market ... I had my options at first and got deeply in love with them but I saw DOI Luke's V.1 and that feeling and love was different ... I saw the picture various times and I couldn't want another one, just him ... that told me instantly he was the one ^^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

The very first moment I saw him ... simply felt that he was the perfect sculpt for me ... I loved him entirely: the face, body, clothes, size ... everything so ... things just settled ;)

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Honestly, I'm absolutely convinced I did the best first choice I could've.
It's almost a year and I love him more and more.
Of course I do want others but not as substitutes :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

DOI Luke V.1 and yes I still own him and is my only one though I just ordered a second ^^

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
My parents and sister saw how much I wanted that certain doll and gave him to me as a birthday present so ... it's like choosing it myself

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I simply narrowed it down to what one was most affordable for me that seemed to catch my attention the most. I had my eyes on three dolls at the time they were all around the same price and I simply went with the one that I bonded with the most just by seeing a picture. The one that my mind seemed to dwell on all the time seemed like the best choice for me.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Just like the other question, when I was thinking about that doll a lot more than the other ones that I had previously had my eye on.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Absolutely not, I don't regret my decision at all and therefore not change my mind for the world. I can't even recall the exact dolls that I was interested in before after recieving the doll that I did end up choosing, dollzone megi-2. He was more than I expected when he arrived and I got to see him face to face for the first time.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Dollzone megi-2. XD and yes I do still own him and plan on keeping him around.

    14. My first doll was a barbie xD...Oke oke sorry!:sweat
But I do kinda collect them...But they're also a bit boring cause you can't really customize them and they are just stiff and plain.
So I read about Bjd's in an anime magazine and fell in love! Exatly what I wanted...That's how the research started and now I'm still looking for my first doll! And the wishlist is getting longer and longer...;)
Usally I like the limited dolls whom are sold out and stuff:doh but hea! I'm sure I'll will find my perfect doll one day!

    15. my first doll is a dollzone fenyo(boy) i saw him at a fair and i just had to have him.
why? i don,t know i did not find him pretty ore handsom, but he just had it for me.

    16. Ha, sounds familiar. :) Elf ears criteria was and is still significant for me. After going around 20 companies I decided to order Bobobie Sprite and I still love her.

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Didn't have much trouble with that, I only new LUTS back then ;)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I saw Soony and I KNEW I want her. But I wouldn't be able to buy her, if it wasn't for the electric shock I got when I saw Miyu IRL. How she was made, how perfectly she felt in hands. I KNEW I want Luts doll. ;)

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

NO WAY! :O She is my eye! My beloved dollfie! ^^

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

CP Soony, yes, I still have her, and God help me, I don't plan on ever getting rid of her hahah!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

      Nope, paid alllll by myself ^^;

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I saw a D.O.T Shall and I REEEEEEEEALLY wanted her! Buuuut she was sold out. So I had to choose another one and I discovered E-an. Love! I knew she was the doll I had to buy. So I actually didn't decide on her at first. Actually, I didn't think she was too cute, so after I found out that I couldn't have Shall I realized her beauty (I never actually got a good look at E-an that's why I didn't know about her).
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
      Never! I found my doll.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I had to pay it off. Actually it sort of was a gift. I had to beg my mom to buy it on her PayPal, and that was on Valentine's day. Sort of was a gift. The gift was ALLOWING me to get the doll...

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was VERY uncertain. I flirted with a lot of dolls, wasn't sure, wasn't sure... even convinced my mom to get me a LittleFee Ante, then changed my mind at the last minute! XP Eventually, after browsing company page after company page after company page, a character began to emerge that I wanted to embody in resin--someone I'd known for a while, but had never really got around to "meeting," if you will. I started coming back to the site to look at her over and over again... and amazingly, she popped up on the marketplace in my home state, at an EXTREMELY reasonable price. It was meant to be.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I honestly don't know... I think it was probably when I decided that mold was perfect for this brilliant new character I'd created and was slowly getting to know. Once I'd decided that the face in those photographs was the one that was closest to what I was seeing in my head, it just felt right. The fact that her price was so low also really helped me to decided that, yeah, it's now or never!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
The doll I ended up getting was an Iplehouse Tania, who is very close in facial features to her "sister" doll, Tatiana. There have been many moments when I've thought, "Is this girl just too sweet for me? Should I have purchased her more serious sister? Would Tatiana be better for this character?" Then, of course, I take a good long look at my doll and realize that, to me at least, she's far more beautiful than any other Tania OR Tatiana I've ever seen. ^.^ In short, I'm delighted with her. I was a little disappointed by her limited range of movement, but we're getting around that.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
An Iplehouse Tania, and I intend to have her by my side for MANY years to come!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I was able to choose her, but my mother graciously agreed to order her as a Christmas gift for me! ^.^ I am extremely lucky.

    20. Sadly I feel like my first little doll was an impulse buy at Ohayocon 2009. She had a little sign about needing to be adopted to a good home. So, I paid the "Re-homing fee" and she is mine. My second doll was the one that really took some time and consideration. I wanted to make sure I got the right doll for the right reasons that time around for sure.
